Excellent video! I love your work. Nice to see that Metro Vancouver has really embraced transit-oriented development principles - as an Australian seeing supertall residential towers right next to super low density development (like at the 10 min mark) is crazy to me - in a good way, of course!
I always found the Vancouver area highway overhead signs to be the best I've ever seen. Big arrows pointing up (instead of down) & it's always very clear showing which lanes depart from the roadway.
Great video of a city and area I used to lvie in shortly after coming here from the 'Peg...however a small little error in the captions at 11:20...Surrey actually has 4 Skytrain stops, King George, Surrey Central, Gateway and Scott Road.
@@TransCanadaPhil no worries...could be worse! People think Delta extends that far north too when it ends at 96th Ave. In any event...if you want more info on the lower mainland etc. feel free to ping me any time, always willing to assist another Winnipegger! Speaking of which...I was back there for the first time in ages back in June...and made it out to Kenora too, first time Ontario by the way. And yeah the drive into Ontario is just as pretty as your drive video was, that said I was chompin at the bit to cruise right back to my home out west here!
Great video! Stayed in Surrey on my first trip in Canada. Unfortunately, Port Mann was tolled at the time so we had to pay that each day but the bridge itself was well worth it! Looking at this video you would never know that Surrey is considered to be the "ghetto" area of Metro Vancouver by some locals. It just seemed like a normal suburb to me with a lot of diversity.
I didn't notice Surrey being "ghetto", but then again.. I'm from Winnipeg and I'm used to areas like North Main/Selkirk Ave area :-) I always describe myself as "upper working class" to people. In Vancouver, the Downtown Eastside is the only area that looks sketchy to me.
And to think skyrail lines are also in construction on the South Shore of Montreal, so this is a taste of what the final product will be. That being said, Montreal traffic will be particularly nasty this year because a ~100 years old train tunnel will be closed for modernization for this new automated rail line, so all of these people usually taking the train there at rush hours will have to hit the road. Metropolitan Freeway will be congested from start to finish. Always nice to see what other provinces are doing with their roads. Are there any things big you wish the BC Ministry of Transportation would do to expand/fix/improve the Province's road network?
The big thing I wish BC would do is finish the twining of the Trans Canada Highway from Yoho National Park to Kamloops in central BC. From Kamloops to Vancouver it's all freeway for the western half of the province but the east side really needs it now.
I understand that Vancouver does not like too many freeways, but a short auxiliary between BC 1 and BC 91 could really improve the connectivity of the whole system.
In the intro it looks like you filmed the SFPR (Hwy 17) in BC. Do you plan on releasing it at some point? It would be very interesting to see driving by all three bridges in metro Vancouver.
Where do you get the road signs that you superimpose on your videos? Are they still shots that you take from the videos? I like that you do that, because with the video sped up, it's too fast to be able to read the signs as they whiz by!
I flew through Vancouver (inbound & outbound, Denver - Hong Kong) in the early 2000s... I'll never forget US customs set up there and trying to insist that I was trying to smuggle Cuban cigars from HK into the US... Huh? Cuban stogies?!!? I told 'em to search my carry-on if they wanted to, but they *will* reimburse me for the trouble. Scare tactic? It sure didn't work! Next time, I'll DRIVE! Looks like a much more pleasant experience! 😆
Kaydrah Communications Wanderlust Cuba is a popular vacation spot for Canadians, (my mother is going at the end of the month). I guess US customs often assumes any Canadian or anyone travelling through Canada has recently come from Cuba.
Couldn't wait to watch this video, and it didn't disappoint! I've never really liked the new Port Mann Bridge though. I swear that is the ugliest cable-stayed bridge ever built! I liked the old Port Mann Bridge much better. (I really do like arch bridges!) It was barely 50 years old, and they could have--and should have--twinned it. But no, we got this ugly monstrosity instead... 😥
compdude100 I never actually saw the old one in real life. The first time I ever went to Vancouver was only in 2013 after the Port Mann bridge was already built.
@@TransCanadaPhil Yeah, I actually haven't been to Vancouver since 2009. I have little excuse, since I live only 2 hrs away in the Seattle area! I plan to go there this spring for a weekend, and I also want to drive to Whistler, ride the BC Ferries, and visit Victoria. So I haven't seen the new Port Mann Bridge in real life yet but I'm quite happy to have ridden across the old one. The main thing I remember is that you really felt like you were up high above the ground on that old bridge.

Thanks for watching! Yeah Vancouver is very different from most cities in Canada. It really looks like no other place in the country.

yes, pointing up always made a lot more sense to me too.
Nice video.
I like the Cape Horn Interchange and Port Mann Bridge too. Real 'Big City Freeway' feel.
yeah it's got that really epic quality to it.
Nice freeway tour. I like the faster speed relative to some of your older videos.
Thanks! It seems to be a real mixed opinion about the speed on this one :-D
I did enjoy today's trip.Very nice !
This video was spectacular. Vancouver is so beautiful.
J Splett thanks! I had a great time on that trip. It was only a quick long weekend trip out to Vancouver by flight (I rented a car out there).
@@TransCanadaPhil Did you know what ever happened to FWJ video 19-03?

Very nice to see again the HW1 through Vancouver area where we drove from Whistler to Lytton in 2014. Thanks!
It's great to see new work from you Phil, enjoyed the ride
Thanks Scott! I've been so busy lately and haven't had as much time to edit videos these days.
@@TransCanadaPhil What do you see at the end of this video?
I liked the faster speed. Good work. Vancouver seems like a really nice area.

Colton Weatherston good observation. Yes, BC 17 will be my next video! 😁✌️
Surrey's likely to pass Vancouver in population because it's so expensive to live in Vancouver.
PelicanGuy that is true!

Catherine Kaye I draw all the signs using a graphics programme called, "The Gimp".
How were petrol prices when you drove through GV?
I think they were okay at the time maybe $1.12 or so per litre. That was back in May 2019 of course.
any videos of highway 97 this year?
Marcus Malm I was not in the okanagan recently.
I’m going to Vancouver This Spring
It's a good time to visit the city. This was recorded in May of last year, so late spring.
Vancouver is one of my favorite cities in Canada. Canada is my favorite country of all time
