Yer most of this is true for proper suits, usually bespoke or quite expensive. Yes, a Marks and Spencer suit will have it's vents and pockets sewn up, as well as spare buttons but it will not have a seam allowance nor will it have raw hems on the trousers. If you wanted to tailor a high street suit you're better off sizing up across the chest and getting a longer leg trouser so the tailor has material to work with.

Generally yes, although I have found a lot of suits do have more seam allowance than seperate work wear.

@@robynholdawayofficial Respectfully, as a bloke who has been buying suits and formal wear for the last 20 years or so, which high street brands are giving seam allowances? The only time I ever find seam allowances on suits are second hand in charity shops. High street brands do not allow for seam allowances because it costs too much. Not even a, mildly, higher end brand like Moss Bros gives seam allowances unless you use their made to measure services.

@MrSteveGrey Hiya, I have found Moss Bros to be good. I generally even found Topman etc to be better than the 'woman's ' equivalent. Perhaps it's the comparison I'm noting? I shall trust you nevertheless! Thank you for sharing

As a tailor/seamstress i can say that's very good advice🤟🏾 always makes me chuckle if i see a person in a suit and the vents are unopened😊

This is ready helpful but I cant get over how customisable storytypeical mens clothes are, I mean why cant womens clothes have larger seams to allow it to be tailored to you, and to accommodate your body changing, I get some of it's about practicality, but lots of womens clothes could have this applied to them and it would make womens clothing more flexible and it would be easier to find well fitting formal ware for alot of people

I got a grey suit from a thrift store, looked up the brand and it was some high quality stuff. And then i checked and all the stitches were still in there!!
So i got it like it was brand new, i might be the first person to wear it for all i know.
I bought it for 1300 Ft, which is like 3.50 usd or something like that

@@robynholdawayofficial ooh. Thats a weird one cos that would mean everyone would need to get it adjusted to fit. The main huge difference in mens suits versus womens is in the back and collar area which is the hardest part to get tailored because of how suiting are constructed. The chest or waist is easy enough to take in but the back shoulder collar area you'd have to deconstruct the collar to adjust which is a nightmare. Do they do slim and broad versions at least? There's nothing worse than an ill fitting suite and the more generic the shape the less people it will fit. Like a one size fits all stuff.

Never unpick the external pockets unless you want a pocket square in the breast pockets - using the external pockets will look bulky and messy mhm

You don't need to open all of the pockets. Indeed if you don't plan on using some of them leave those pockets closed as they'll last better closed.
