  • Sleep is central to maintaining your physical and mental health, but many people don't sleep enough. We all do it, but what happens to us when we sleep?

    Every night almost everyone on the planet enters into a state of unconsciousness and paralysis - but what is really happening inside the body when we drift off, and what's the impact if we don't get enough sleep?
    Sleep is regulated by your circadian rhythm, or body clock located in the brain. The body clock responds to light hews ramping up production of the hormone melatonin at night, and switching it off when it senses light.
    There are four stages of sleep that the body experiences in cycles throughout the night. On a good night we cycle through these stages four or five times.
    Stages one and two are light sleep. This is a transition from being awake to falling asleep. Heart rate and breathing begin to slow, body temperature falls, and muscles may twitch. Stage 3 is sometimes referred to as Delta sleep - because of the slow Delta brainwaves that are released during this stage. This is the first stage of deep sleep where our cells produce the most growth hormone to service bones and muscles, allowing the body to repair itself. Stage 4 is where we begin to dream. The body creates chemicals that render it temporarily paralyzed so that we do not act out our dreams. In this stage, the brain is extremely active and our eyes, although closed, dark back and forth as if we were awake.
    Humans roughly spend one third of their lives asleep. Modern lifestyles, stress and the proliferation of Technology, mean that people is sleeping far less today than they were a century ago.
    Sleeping less than seven hours per day is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic conditions which could reduce life expectancy.
    So for a healthier longer life get some shut-eye

      Yet research shows later morning starts for teenagers and later end of day aids concentration and focus and the reverse is for junior kids where early starts work better and early finishes. So lets start school at almost the same time as every adult needs to start work. I wonder if any country would consider changes to work days and school hours depending on Winter-Summer. Since living near the equator means similar daylight/night hours- does sleep research show it works better as citizens are seeing darkness and daylight at the same time

    I've actually witnessed how dreams begin a few times. The best way I can describe it is that my brain falls in some sort of subconscious state where I'm imaging these *thoughts* or *images* (like random shapes or whatever) as if I was going through my memories and it all seems normal and natural whilst I'm falling asleep. However, I've had this process interrupted a few times where I've *snapped out of it* and instantaneously forgot what I was seeing and couldn't remember what it was in the same way as we can never remember the beginning of our dreams. I am convinced that this is how everyone's dreams formulate

    Falling asleep for me goes like this: I think about anything, and it slowly progresses into a stage where I get weird, abstract ideas. I begin to focus on my thoughts more than on the feeling of my body. Then, without any notice I fall asleep.

    • @andy-mb3nn
      @andy-mb3nn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Same. Many times I start having wacky, abstract thoughts and then think so my self. "wow, that was a wierd thought, I must be about to fall asleep, yes! at last!" Then I never remember much more after that until I wake up in the morning :)

    • @sarahgoguen3020
      @sarahgoguen3020 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think that's what happens to me too! and then sometimes during that in between stage, I'll "wake up" or just become fully aware of my surroundings again. And it's weird, because when that happens I immediately feel lighter, not physically, but it feels like some sort of invisible weight has been lifted off of me. It's a little difficult to explain but yeah

    I am 68 y.o. I have never slept more than 4 or 5 hours a night my whole life. I am in great shape. One reason maybe because I learned, at a very early age, to control my dreams. As a small child I suffered from terribly, horribly bad dreams. My mother would yell at me for screaming in the night and tell me to stop screaming and waking her up. I started to play the dream over in my mind. Asking, how do I change it? What can I do to stop it from scaring me? How can I be my own hero? As I lay there thinking what to do, I would fall asleep again and then change the dream. It took several weeks or months before I could control my dreams without waking up, but I can still do it even today.

      No human can go without sleep or a very small amount. Those who work all night as you say either die early, suffer long term health issues or end up unable to concentrate during the day. It looks like competition but its not really, its presenteeism. Even those who do night shifts are shown to suffer long term health and brain "damage", even if they are in theory getting 8hrs sleep in the day.

    not sleeping for a second for more than 2 or 3 days have strange effects on your mind and body, unexplainable things you can feel, is like your in the 4th dimension spiritually....... but it is difficult to sleep normally when you are already very old maybe this is the reason all people are going to die...... i wonder what is like if people doesn't sleep and yet they are all healthy and their body and brain will heal automatically. the brain has the power and function to recall or remember so we have to sleep to put our brain and body do the job. thank you to "the economist" for sharing this informative video.

    Many biological processes happen during sleep: The brain stores new information and gets rid of toxic waste. Nerve cells communicate and reorganize, which supports healthy brain function. The body repairs cells, restores energy, and releases molecules like hormones and proteins.
