Good Stuff. here are the three things I stress to new Archers
    1) Everyone Misses - it is okay to miss
    2) It starts and ends with your shot cycle - Know it inside and out, write it down. Don't be afraid to experiment and change it.
    3) Just Shoot - Don't over think it, just shoot, have fun and it will come with time. Stressing over something, over thinking it will not make you any better, but shooting will.

As a purely instinctive shooter of 28 years,
    1. Draw to a precise and consistent spot, period.
    2. Point your finger/ look at your target without griping your bow tightly. Helps to put bow holder fingertips on front of bow instead of gripping the bow tightly and torquing bow left or right.
    3. Don’t pluck the string! Let the release be smooth.
*4. Aim changes as you turn in your
deer stand..... Practice from all angles. A back left far shot (quartering away because you could move when he was right underneath you)I have to “aim” at the back feet to hit vitals.
On instinct you can shoot from the hip, or while the target is a rapid motion, that would never come into play while any sighting the arrow comes into play. I personally love swinging a 20oz coke bottle from a string at 20-30 yards to hone my skills.
*Single longest instinctive deer shot- 34 yards
*Longest target single shot without knowledge of distance on a bobcat target- 84 yards in 8 ring
*Average deer hunting shot- 8 yards
    *Deer taken with recurve- 128
*Deer unrecovered in 28 years- 1
Always be sure of your shot or don’t shoot.
PS. don’t forget about deer jumping the string. I have had some jump 12” or completely turn around at 10 yards. So be focus on the awareness of the deer. Watching them can tell you a lot.

I shoot a slingshot. I shoot for fun but mainly train to compete. Yes, slingshot tournaments are real. The shot cycle is what i stress when i practice my shooting. Only i never knew it as a shot cycle. I called it the 1 2 3s.. im glad to call it my shot cycle now. Thanks man. Btw, im new to archery. So thank you so much man. You speak clear and dont confuse. Shoot straight buddy.

  • @Yonada
    @Yonada 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

You've covered most here, particularly with the shot cycle. But to give some additions then, I'll try to mention three things that aren't complete repetitions of what you said. For context, I shoot only historical bows: I have a hungarian rider's bow of 55# at 30'' draw and a english style longbow of around 57# at 28'' draw (which I use mainly these days). I shoot entirely instinctively.
    1. Focus on the target. Think of nothing else, if possible. It is you, the bow, the arrow and the target. Nothing else.
    2. Think of how you would toss a rock or a ball or something. You can't aim with those, but you know instinctively how to throw it where you want. This can also be true for your arrow with a bit of practice. This is where muscle memory comes in.
    3. Don't hold too long. The longer you hold, the more you start to try aiming and analysing your shot. Then it goes from being instinctive to being a conscious thought process. And at that point, you're starting to make mistakes. "Is this right? Or this? Or maybe this. Am I anchored correctly? Is my head always this position?"

well im a beginner archer love achery to death! thank you for the great video brother go in peace! my 3 tips are
1: strech before shooting espetally if you shoot a heavy draw weight bow.
    2: focus.
3: invisione where you want the arrow to land and focus on that one spot. im a newb but those helped me thus far in archery.
    sorry for poor spelling =(

I agree with this. Here are mine when you're having a not so good shooting day. (Admit it, you've experienced this countless times)
    1. Don't stress over it. We all have those days.
    2. Still not your usual self? End early. Cut on the distance a bit and end your day with a shot/s you're absolutely comfortable with.
    3. After calling it a day, relax, have a cup of coffee.
I know this isn't much but it does help me when those days are in. :)

  • @shawnnielsen1898
    @shawnnielsen1898 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I try to first do it for the fun and focus. I do know that when I really shut out the rest of the world and concentrate my arrow into the target with the form that I have refined over the last 4 years my shots are pretty good. I do know that if I see a butterfly or bug to my right my arrow will go there;-). That said I think I have a lot more work to do. I also think that if many of us put ourselves on video to either self scrutinize or or have other people look over our form, many of us would have hiccups in our shooting. I have had the privilege of meeting Arne Moe in person and to have a video of me looked at by him and it always amazes me how when I am thinking I got it all down that there is a refinement needed to help me just a little farther down the accuracy road.
Thanks for your videos and your heart for Jesus!

    • @catholichackstraditionalar305
      @catholichackstraditionalar305  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you Shawn! It is so true, I think I am focused on a "spot" then, my eye switching to something else last second and the arrow just follows it. You also right about the scrutiny, it is hard to film myself shooting... worse to watch myself doing it. I'm grateful for your feed back, thank you and God Bless You!

hi brother, just want say i love your videos. They have really helped me get my trad shooting back up to what it once was and beyond. what i changed was interesting. 1) i started by looking at setting out a constant cycle. i now start with my feet then shoulders once i feel straight and ready i then and only then get and arrow from my quiver. once ive nocked an arrow i get my hand on my walking point then i wait and see the shot. 2) i lift to the line. once i have the bow inline balanced and on point i draw straight back to my face. this has the benefit that i do not need to lead my head to the string its all ready there. this next step has been the decider. 3) engage with the shot. I feel my back engaged and under tension i see my line, arrow point still im almost ready. "I am capable" this is me letting my self know that the shot is ready. we all try to pre-empt the shot to one level or anther. by tell your self that you are ready, what ever words you use you are reducing the minds need to brace. its a bit like saying its going to be ok.
God bless and keep you all.

Hey, really good video. I have been shooting for only 6 months or so, but have been able to shoot both indoors and outdoors with Greg Richards( 3D Archery & Archery 101) and Jeff Krug (The Nocking Point). I just listen to phrases that they repeat to themselves and apply them to myself.
    1. stance: where are my feet pointing.
    2. Rotational draw (a la Arnie Moe).
    3. Follow through the shot from beginning to end ( shot cycle). Focus on the process, NOT the result.
3.5 Enjoying this wonderful journey. I have such a good time when I am shooting, but only because I am doing the very best that I can and leaving the results up to God.
It's all about enjoying the journey.

most people are more consistent in the beginning than they would believe. 1) blank bale shoot with a breathing system. it will align your shot sequence to your breathing. helps with muscle memory, helps you be steady.
2)know what your arrow is doing. walkback shoot at a dot on a vertical line. as you back up, you will see left or right impacts if you're arrows dont quite match. ideally, you want your arrow tip to fall in line with your impact point at full draw. if it does not, being aware of that can help you adjust.
    3) ask questions, like Joe says, check out these youtube archers. find groups on fb. ask questions.

Been shooting regularly since 2009, somewhat self-taught, Masters of the Barebow, Utube, self videos, advice from friends. My tips would contain the ones you are talking about, as well as 1) Practice 2) Enjoy 3) Don't try too hard, relax. Oh yah, did I mention practice? I have a friend that will take his bow and shoot at least one arrow daily, sometimes 100, sometimes one. god Bless

'bout your bonus tip.... Fred Bear said (and others too): aim small and miss small...
We are humans, we tend to see the big picture. Every archer has to learn to focus himself on a small spot.
And yes, lately setting little spots on my target and taking those as the point to hit, helped me a lot in getting
more consistent on hitting my targets.

To further elaborate on my comment above, there is a specific video on youtube somewhere of 3 olympic archers, one of them including BRADY ELLISON, taking their sights and stabilizers off of their bows and shooting 30 yards. It was almost like watching beginners shoot. And they are amazing archers! So just remember that whenever us barebow shooters miss a shot or have an off day, EVEN OLYMPIANS SCREW UP! Stay positive and have fun! Thats the biggest thing about it is to have fun!

I really hate to say it, because they do great at what they do, but man they are specialized. I can't imagine training that hard to use all of those things, and knowing in the back of my head that I'm screwed if i don't have them...Barebow all the way. I feel like its almost the same argument as the Lars Andersen argument.
Still love watching olympic recurve, though.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei 7 ปีที่แล้ว

The video doesn't prove that Olympians screw up (though they do). They're using their Olympic gear in a scenario that they've never practiced for. It would be similar to forcing someone to shoot with their opposite hand. There isn't much you could (or should) take from it other than several elite athletes having fun for the camera.

Number 1 no matter what have fun- number 2 is keeping your bow arm up until after the arrow is in the target and 3 whatever shooting style you have strive to be the most consistent in that form you can be. Don't worry about how other guys say you should shoot. It's all about consistency. If you don't believe me google the Wilham brothers. One of them shot from the hip and could out shoot most people.

For me it's all about enjoyment and consistency of form. Until the zombie apocalypse or the lizard people rise up, it's just a hobby. I had someone (Id never met) screaming at me recently for being too casual. a) i hit the gold with every arrow b) someone waited until he went the toilet, beat him a bit and flushed his head down a bowl. Ive never seen him there again.

    Hopefully this tip will help.
I try to get up 5 to 10 minutes earlier every morning so I can shoot at least ONE arrow...its the first cold shot that puts the arrow where it needs to go. We dont get dozens of practice shots early in the morning before we get in our stand or blind...we have to make the best of our FIRST SHOT at a confident yardage limit.
    Hopefully I examined this right...?!?!?!

Great video Joe. I think your covered the big tips. I'm still a long way from the consistency that I want to have, but here' s a few things that are helping me along the way:
    1. Multiple anchor points. I'm still experimenting with this one. The most natural anchor point for me is the index finger to the corner of the mouth. I've recently added thumb knuckle to jawbone. I tried adding a third by touching my nose to the string, which lined up the string with my site picture. But I noticed that was was causing my shots to go right. I'm shooting straighter ignoring the string and just anchoring on the mouth and jaw. Go figure. I guess that goes to 3D Archery Greg's advice to not overthink it.
    2. Finishing move. A dynamic release really helps me. By focusing on my finishing move rather than loosing the arrow, I get a smoother release. I've taken to touching my shoulder, which feels natural to me. When I have the proper back tension, once I commit to the shot, it just sort of happens without another conscious thought.
    3. Blank bale. Shooting into a blank bale up close without a target or thought of aiming is great for internalizing my shot sequence. I try to do this every time I hit the range. I've tried it with my eyes closed and that's okay too. But the main thing is to not aim and concentrate on the mechanics of the shot sequence. Sort of the exact opposite of shooting at small targets, but it works a different aspect of the sport.

I am still very new in archery but I just had an aha moment this weekend. the range I go to always has a strong crosswind due to the location. I thought that was the reason my arrows always hit left of where I wanted. this weekend the wind was very light and my arrows were still off. at that point I moved my string to be inside my site picture rather than just right of it and boom, arrows are are where I want them and my groups were a little smaller.
I am also working to learn instinctive shooting. have you tried the Dixie cup training method? I think merlin archery has a video on it.

  • @Sonicguy95
    @Sonicguy95 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not tips but more steps or stages:
    1) learn form, cycle, etc. the physical process that one has to go through to shoot
    2) learn bow mechanics: spine & tuning
    3) shoot and get some range
Interesting with Joel Turner. I've heard and seen a bit. I'll agree with had word association if you are new or really need the focus. I've shot enough that I just know how it all feels from memory. The only thing my eyes really to is aim. All I do is shoot, simple as throwing a baseball. You know how to, just do it, simple as breathing.
However I will admit that there is paralysis by analysis, but if one just keeps calm a focuses on the shot it will work out better.
And as Greg said: its ok to miss. If you can shoot judos you can't loose your arrows if you miss.

    1. Do not grip the bow with all 5 fingers like a hard grip, it tends to cause bow torque. Just use the index finger alone, just enough to hold the bow and keep it from flying out of your hand.
    2. Do not rush the shot cycle. Slow and smooth, slow and smooth.
    3. Everyone shoots differently. As long as you understand the basics of form, do what is comfortable for you.

I noticed you put 3 fingers below the nock, I usually put 1 up and 2 below. Is there a real difference?

My 3 tips from 49 years of shooting the same recurve bow.
    1) Mentally see yourself shooting and hitting the target before you ever draw back. Visualize your success.
    2) Don't aim. Don't even think about aiming. Aiming is what you do with a bow with sights. This is instinctive shooting. Just look at the spot you want to hit, draw, and immediately release when you reach your anchor point. Your brain will make the right adjustments when you let your motor skills and not your conscious thoughts do the job.
    3) Relax. Instinctive archery is enormously fun. Enjoy it. Don't work at it. Just have fun. You will do better than you think when you are not tense about each shot.
Some of your subscribers might enjoy seeing a couple of my traditional archery videos which show some old school tips of how I do it. If so, just click on my channel name.
Good pointers. I enjoyed your video. Keep posting them.

I had to watch the video again.... I don't think I used a quiver at all, just my back pocket, or stuffed the arrows inside my belt maybe.

hey sir I was wanting to ask is it better to shoot with fletching or feather's I'm a left handed shooter

    • @catholichackstraditionalar305

Thanks for watching! I think the answer depends on your set up... if you are shooting off of a riser shelf, then feathers are your better bet. The feathers will collapse when the arrow is leaving the bow allowing it to clear the shelf without affecting the flight. Plastic vains are too rigid and can throw your arrow off. If you are shooting through a whisper biscket, or something similar, then vains are good to go. Hope that helps!

Do the exact same thing every time
Aim low. If you think it's good, aim lower.
Dont put the end of the arrow on ur target

I wonder why you keep showing yourself filming yourself? Weird, IMHO. And, IMHO, the only thing I've learned for sure about archery is that, when you think you've discovered the key, you haven't. ;-) Tips number 2 and 3: Refer back to Tip #1.
