I totally understand. If you film it from the front you're missing the most important part as the thumb is blocking the view. Great that this video helped you out!

This is the best tutorial I’ve seen on this. The trick is really to push into the string and catch it with the thumb rather than ”grace it” as people tend to say. Great video!
HOLY MOTHER OF THE DJENT GOD THIS WAS ACTUALLY HELPFUL! For those who are still having trouble with the pinching, don’t près your finger hard, it may be difficult, bu you have to just barely graze the skin on your finger on the string to make the noise!

After trying pinch harmonics for ages, and not getting it quite right, it was frustrating to feel like I was almost there. Coming across this video saying that it could be done in "2 minutes", I was very skeptical. But I gave it a try, and with the camera angle and straightforward explanation, it worked! I have the right feel now. Now comes the practice! It's gonna be like hot sauce, and get used on everything!

I can't believe you condensed what others waffle on for 20 on in to 2 minutes and you taught me better than the others. Angling the pick allows me to hit these consistently but more importantly, I never knew the position on the neck influenced tone - I compared a tapped harmonic near the neck to my pinch harmonics nearer the bridge while learning and was going insane thinking I was doing something wrong. Yeah, most lessons, especially technique lessons, can be done in just a few minutes. However, we're on youtube and as creators we have to take into account the algorithm. (even though it changes all the time) Longer videos in some cases outperform the shorter ones because probably on average, the user is watching for a longer time. I try not to care too much about that and thought I'd do this one just short n sweet 🙂

Bro so many times I’ve heard people say you’re pinching the string between you’re thumb and the pick and every time I tried that it wouldn’t work. Thanks for actually showing what’s going on it helps tremendously
I also didn't understand for a very long time, but like 2 days ago I was practing a song and for some reason I finally could do it everytime like it was magic... Fr I've been trying to learn pinch harmonics for more than a year by now, but I could never do it properly and with consistency, but now i can do it like 8/10 times I try to do it (At least in the lower 3 strings). I'm gonna leave my tips here so maybe it helps you (not saying is right or correct, but its what is working for me, and I'm a completely begginer on guitar) - The touch of your finger on the picked string that they say its gotta be super slight, doesn't need to be as slight as you think, sometimes I just put too weight in my hand to touch the string, and still I get the P.H, so don't be afraid to touch the string (but this really is the neat part) - When I pick the string I kinda twist my pulse from up to down and from right to the left at the same time (this is the movement that makes my finger touch the string) - Try not to rest your finger on the string after you picked, this will kill the vibration and the harmonic. Take your right hand away from the strings and control the P.H bending the picked string - The first time I had the feeling on how to do it I was with an overdrive pedal and a distortion pedal in max distortion possible, giving me huge gain, so this helped the P.H to come out easily, so you should crank that gain and distortion up to make it easier to feel when it's coming and what movement you did that made it come out. - My impression it's that is more about a feeling on doing it, I can't explain... I've been watching tutorial and practicing for months, maybe more than a year and I could never do it... But out of nowhere 2 days ago I realize the feeling of the technique and suddenly I'm doing it. It's CRAZY! Hope this can help you in some way, don't give up, P.H are so satisfying to land...

I've been struggling with pinch harmonics for weeks now, none of the other videos I've watched clarified it well enough and I was so sick of the "it's hard to explain, you have to play around and try different positions to figure it out on your own". Turns out it's possible to explain them in an easy and very intuitive way. I've played my first ever pinch harmonics thanks to your tutorial. You are my personal hero.

Try angling the pick at a 45 degree angle. Then when you pick, the string rolls off one of the edges of the pick and briefly touches you thumb. I found this to be the only way to make it consistantly good.

This is the best explanation I have seen. When he mentions let the string bounce up to the thumb, that's the key. Other refer to tilting the thumb to touch the string; it's note practical to rotate the thumb individually to just to get a pinch harmonic on a specific note. This explanation works best for me, pinch harmonics galore!

I'm a saxophonist and I very rarely play guitar, maybe once a month (self-taught just for fun) and after watching this I could instantly do pinch harmonics. If that doesn't tell you it's a good video, I don't know what does.

I’ve been playing for two years now, almost three, and I’ve always wanted to learn pinch harmonics. Everyone said they were very difficult to learn and much harder to master. After watching this, I practiced them for ten minutes and I’ve been getting them consistently. They’re easy to learn, but I’m guessing kind of hard to master. Thank you very much!
hard part is getting them to fire off in the middle of a riff or solo,for me its easy cause ive been doing it a while but i did pick it up fast,if you cant choke up on the pick in time just bend your wrist to get the string contact with your thumb,that way you dont have to fuck around with the pick
if anyone still having trouble: what helped me is thinking of resting your hand first on the string and THEN doing the picking + thumb motion. Afterwards try to get fluent. helped me get way more consistent.

Great that the video helped you tackle the pinch harmonic. Once you know how to do something, most things are easy. But it is the figuring out how to do it that takes the most time. :-)

This is so hard and frustrating and probably really easy once youve got it down. im holding the pick correctly and hitting the string with my pick and then thumb but no squeals yet. im gonna keep trying.
Ok.... I've been playing for 35 years and do pinch harmonics in a completely different way - this method looks cool :) My son is learning now, and found the method I use to be really difficult. I'm going to show him this vid as it seems a lot simpler than the method I use. Nice one!
@@Yourguitarworkshop Ah ok, the method I use is to hit the string normally with the pick and my 'ring finger' fingernail at essentially the same time. It's predictable (for me anyway) and I use it all the time. It's just a tightening of your grip on the pick to tuck your fingernail onto the string. Just like with your technique there are harmonic sweet spots, exactly where you've indicated. By the way, even though it's a work-day here, I quickly plugged in a guitar and tried your technique and it hit straight away :) I'm not used to it, but I can see that a new player would find that super easy and could develop that into their playing style! My son isn't back from school yet, but I'll update to let you know how it goes!
@@3DRCGuy Thanks so much for your explanation, tried your way and it definitely works. My harmonics don't sound as clear when I do but I think that's a matter of practice. Your method is in a way similar to playing "picked harmonics"--> yes I made that name up., but it best describes the artificial harmonics as you would play them on an acoustic guitar. you would touch the string with your indexfinger and pluck with the thumb. In your case the picking is in front of the harmonic which might be why I find them less clear? Not sure. Super cool though, thanks!
If your looking for that ZZ Top/ Van Halen pinch harmonics sound it helps to use more gain/distortion, overdrive. The type of guitar pick that helps for me I started using the EVH .60 guitar picks too. Has enough bounce back to let the string hit the thumb without breaking the string when speed picking.

@F4IRS4UCE the only downside is it tends to wear the edges of the plectrums fairly fast. Small price to pay though.

wow dude ty so much. ive been searching for a video that didnt give the players life story and how they got harmonics figured out or have them ramble on to reach the 10 minute mark. i got a good understanding from just looking at your thumb position because i can ACTUALLY see it. ty so much

Before watching this video i was able to do it about 1 time over 5 attemps 😂😂 BUT WOW... just after 40 seconds i stopped the video and tried... now i can do it almost every time i want...

I’ve been playing for two years now, almost three, and I’ve always wanted to learn pinch harmonics. Everyone said they were very difficult to learn and much harder to master. After watching this, I practiced them for ten minutes and I’ve been getting them consistently. They’re easy to learn, but I’m guessing kind of hard to master. Thank you very much!
hard part is getting them to fire off in the middle of a riff or solo,for me its easy cause ive been doing it a while but i did pick it up fast,if you cant choke up on the pick in time just bend your wrist to get the string contact with your thumb,that way you dont have to fuck around with the pick

this tutorial is insane ive been playing for like a few months and i hit my first pinch harmonic like a minute after watching this
if anyone still having trouble: what helped me is thinking of resting your hand first on the string and THEN doing the picking + thumb motion. Afterwards try to get fluent. helped me get way more consistent.
First time I did it, it actually worked! The only tutorial that actually worked for me.
Everyone else that posts these videos doesn’t say anything about letting the string bounce back that was a great way to put it

Great that the video helped you tackle the pinch harmonic. Once you know how to do something, most things are easy. But it is the figuring out how to do it that takes the most time. :-)
I too watched several other videos and still couldn't do it. That key detail about the 'bounce back' doing the work for you finally made me get it. As others have said, very well done tutorial, thank you!
This is so hard and frustrating and probably really easy once youve got it down. im holding the pick correctly and hitting the string with my pick and then thumb but no squeals yet. im gonna keep trying.

Ok.... I've been playing for 35 years and do pinch harmonics in a completely different way - this method looks cool :) My son is learning now, and found the method I use to be really difficult. I'm going to show him this vid as it seems a lot simpler than the method I use. Nice one!

@@Yourguitarworkshop Ah ok, the method I use is to hit the string normally with the pick and my 'ring finger' fingernail at essentially the same time. It's predictable (for me anyway) and I use it all the time. It's just a tightening of your grip on the pick to tuck your fingernail onto the string. Just like with your technique there are harmonic sweet spots, exactly where you've indicated. By the way, even though it's a work-day here, I quickly plugged in a guitar and tried your technique and it hit straight away :) I'm not used to it, but I can see that a new player would find that super easy and could develop that into their playing style! My son isn't back from school yet, but I'll update to let you know how it goes!
@@3DRCGuy Thanks so much for your explanation, tried your way and it definitely works. My harmonics don't sound as clear when I do but I think that's a matter of practice. Your method is in a way similar to playing "picked harmonics"--> yes I made that name up., but it best describes the artificial harmonics as you would play them on an acoustic guitar. you would touch the string with your indexfinger and pluck with the thumb. In your case the picking is in front of the harmonic which might be why I find them less clear? Not sure. Super cool though, thanks!

If your looking for that ZZ Top/ Van Halen pinch harmonics sound it helps to use more gain/distortion, overdrive. The type of guitar pick that helps for me I started using the EVH .60 guitar picks too. Has enough bounce back to let the string hit the thumb without breaking the string when speed picking.

This is great. Helped me figure this out in about ten minutes.
I spent too long focused on how i held the pick and it got better when i mastered the wrist movement. I dont use this technique but it does work. Thanks for the video.
