04:09 But Sauron's motives are known, and they are pretty straightforward, even human, just evil in the way humans can be quite evil. He's just a supernatural being of great power, age, and wisdom. He wants to rule everyone and everything, which has devolved into seeing the world entirely in that vein. Hence his gigantic blind spot which is central to the whole plot.
04:30 YES! But..is that sense of mysterious terror so central it must never be sacrificed? I would argue 'no.' But also, what we learn might well be as fascinating or at least as interesting as the mystery. Can be, anyway.

one my favorites Antagonist in Fantasy is Glaurung in the Children of Hurin a land Dragon. And the father Smaug, what like about Glaurung he dangerous. And when he speaks in clamed tone, that don't mess with me.

as much as i hated it i also loved. the first sword of shannara did the "villian gets defeated too easily" in a unique way. this whole book, the Warlock Lord is built up as this harrowing force of evil and decay. but in the end the power of the sword reveals the most facinating thing. Brona is a restless spirit who did not want to die, the truth revealed to him shows him, he did die and that hes an empty husk of who he once was

It's not really a too easy scenario. The protagonist's whole struggle is becoming the person who could defeat the Warlock Lord. It's never a matter of overpowering the villain, bacause I'd argue that the antagonist is as much the corrupting nature of misusing magic as it is any actual character.

This is why I made the antagonist in the book I'm writing a natural disaster. All the smaller antagonists are just people reacting to the problems it created

Charles Dickens villains are viscerally sickening. Bill Sykes is one, or Uriah Heap or that knitting woman in A Tale of Two Cities.

    😂🦄🐱🐶🐴😳
    Favorite antagonist 🤔
Other than the cogs in the big corporate overlord types it would have to be Nicodemus in Joe Ledger
    and oddly
    Nicodemus in Harry Dresden 🤔
    also
Davina in The Black Dagger Brotherhood.
