Yes about 11 years ago, I got tired of making money and quit the trades to become a technology teacher in high schools. I currently teach Automotive and Metalwork classes to about 175 students a year but the coolest thing about this TH-cam channel is that I now am teaching thousands of people monthly!! great video, i braze copper alot and I will say if you want to make your leaves faster use a brazing rod, these rods can be sold at a hvac supply house or even in plumbing supply houses. You wont have to heat the copper too red glow as the rod will melt right into the copper much better and flows more like water. Also you can use soft solder instead which is used to solder copper wires together. That will give a silver joint but may look pretty cool as-well. R56-199 Sil-Fos 15 Phosphorus/Copper/Silver Alloy (Normal brazing rods used for high pressure aswell Solder Rosin (used for electrical soldering) These 2 different techniques can be used to join copper together!

Nice to see these coloring treatments and how you go about fabricating. I'm thinking of getting back into this form because copper is my all time favourite metal. After that, the brass and bronze alloys. Oxy-Acetylene brazing to steel supports was as far as I got. My father used to supply these metals to dozens of artisans and high end sculptors so I've been exposed to a whole gamut of art forms.

Thanks, I think I have found my niche in TH-cam where my videos show everything you need to know but with a bit of a story to go with the build, kind of like a tv episode so they skills build on each other. I haven't yet but I had a couple students who don't have me this semester that can't wait to make it later this year. I have also had an offer to buy this project and several staff wanting to try this project out so I would say it was a success! So many different options to create other types of leaves or flowers with these techniques too! Maybe I'll make another one next Fall with Maple or Oak leaves! I also had a bunch of other ideas to make a single leaf into a project itself......I also had the urge to make more medieval armor when I was doing the fluting too......too many projects and not enough time!
I grow bonsai Japanese maples. And this gave me the idea to make one out of copper. Tapered copper pipe for the trunk,roots, and the bifurcated branches, using progressively smaller gauges of electrical wire that have been filed to give them some taper for the finer branches and roots. Progressively smaller leaves. Maybe fill the pipe with solder after everything is brazed to be able to get the odd bends and to give it more heft. Riveting the base to some busbars brazed into the shape of a small rectangular bonsai pot. Granulated copper for the "soil". The "refinement" ie smooth taper on the trunk, bifurcated branches, and roots is what makes a tiny tree a "bonsai". I may never actually do any of this, but it's now on the list!

Great project! Every time I watch you I learn 2 or 3 things. I never would of thought to use the torch to cut the leaves. Really good photography also. One thing I would like to add is that you are using fire brick. The wrong brick and it could explode. Don't ask me how I know.

@@wayofthewrench My experience is from concrete also. It is from pockets of moisture being trapped in the product. I don't see why this couldn't happen with brick.
Man I loved Metalwork in high school.....I made everything I could in there. Coolest thing I ever made was a rotary safe, I'll have to make a video on how to make it in the future.
Imagined making 6 branches, then a 5 foot 2. " Copper tree trunk , grind etch in bark, transition to 1" arms ,then 1/2 inch copper line , make a base with a copper bowl , have a life size 6 foot tree 🎄

This is awesome. I have wanted to learn how to weld just to do sculpture work. Would love to find a place to go do this. Hobby workshop to do occasional projects....and learn / practice with cool projects like this. Great video .you do a great job explaining the steps. I don't have the acetaline but maybe I can go small scale project with my tinsnips. My neighbors might knock on my door for the hammering..maybe take that part to tap away at the park for an afternoon. 🍁 The scraps could maybe be used to make pendants maybe. 💮 Final sculpture is beautiful. 🍁🍁🍁

Earth tone? You mean burnt to a crisp? That would be the students, they torch the hell out of them when they are welding despite me showing them to hold the metal with the magnet on one side while tacking the other end. Thanks for the watch!
Yeah you have to feel when the copper work hardens or you will keep pushing the copper until it cracks. A quick anneal and you can shape some more. I feel ya, you gotta become one with projects like this. I really was happy with how this project turned out and I learned a lot. Thanks for the watch Mike!
Great video! This is exactly the type of project I want to be able to make. I’ve been soldering in small sizes (like jewelry etc) but have always wanted to learn welding sculptural pieces, only where I live courses on the subject are astronomically expensive (as usually paid for by employers looking to advance an employees technique) and very few and far apart, plus usually don’t get into anything artful or decorative. Definately subscribing and checking out your channel more to learn the difference between what I know of soldering and this. As I’m already wondering basic stuff like why I can’t see you using flux etc. I won’t bother with questions I’m sure your other videos answer ;) Marvelous piece, love it!

You should check out the how to braze video and it will explain the flux you mentioned. Some brazing rods have flux already on the brazing rod and some either require flux or do not depending on what you are brazing. If you have access to your own equipment, I would recommend just trying some sculpture on your own....save your money for materials. If you follow the steps in this video, you can totally come up with your own custom designed brazing sculpture. If you do, I'd love to see some pics, just dm my instagram. Cheers from Canada eh!
Good video but if you cannot get hold of copper I find old coffee cans are a great source of material and then you can solder the parts rather than weld or base the parts😁

Can I use an oxy acetylene torch to repair a bronze statue using a silicon bronze rod? Most people use TIG welding, but it just too expensive for me. Everyone talks about bronze brazing, but not bronze brazing BRONZE. I wonder if it’s not possible because the statue and the rod have the same melting temperature.
It should be possible but with it's own issues. The base material will suck a lot of the heat away so you will need to preheat and use a bigger tip than usual. Make sure the base material is clean and don't use the inner cone of the flame to heat the metal. You may have to ask your supplier what type of brazing rod you should use. Good luck!
Hi there! Any advice for a goldsmith/silversmith looking to do some large scale projects? I'm currently working with an oxy/propane setup and a smith little torch. (I've also got a maap gas torch I've busted out for big projects here and there.) Do I need to upgrade big time, or can I limp by braising bigger copper pieces with my current setup?
It's hard to know how capable your setup is, best thing to do is just try it. I bet you will be able to as long as the pieces you are brazing aren't too thick...which won't be a problem as the cost of metal is way too much to use thick copper anyways. If the copper never gets red then the copper is dumping the heat faster than you can apply it....if this happens then your setup is too weak. Thanks for the watch!
You need a lpg regulator, lpg torch, lpg rated hose....but yes. Cutting, brazing, and heating are all possible with propane but not good for gas welding. An Acetylene flame creates a cleaning action while welding and propane doesn't. So you can do this project with your BBQ bottle....and then sell it to buy top sirloin to cook on your BBQ after!
No oxygen levels are the same but it's more about where you are directing the heat and is it constant or focused on one spot. Focus heat on the thicker piece and keep it moving until both pieces are the same temperature, then add your braze. If you keep it on the thinner piece or stay on one spot you'll burn through. Hard to say with art pieces. You have to add the cost of materials too, in this case the copper alone was probably $150 to $200. This piece might go for $750 to $1200, but could go for more if it was commissioned. Thanks for the watch!
I try to use basic tools so that more people can do the project at home. Most people don't have a compressor and an air hammer. That's a good idea though, you do a lot of metal art? Thanks for the watch!

It's not fusion welding. Brazing is brazing. The series is how to become a welder and has other processes that are not welding too like plasma cutting too. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel.
Yeah you should be able to do it with an aluminum brazing rod but you may need to do a specific cleaning and flux process in order for it to work. Cheers!

I love it, in a sense frost is heat annealing, it burns the leaf with a bite of ice ,adds color, and it falls.

@@wayofthewrench My experience is from concrete also. It is from pockets of moisture being trapped in the product. I don't see why this couldn't happen with brick.
I believe that fire bricks are very porous and allow moisture to escape during heating so there is no pressure to quickly build up and expand rapidly.

Imagined making 6 branches, then a 5 foot 2. " Copper tree trunk , grind etch in bark, transition to 1" arms ,then 1/2 inch copper line , make a base with a copper bowl , have a life size 6 foot tree 🎄

Earth tone? You mean burnt to a crisp? That would be the students, they torch the hell out of them when they are welding despite me showing them to hold the metal with the magnet on one side while tacking the other end. Thanks for the watch!

Yeah you have to feel when the copper work hardens or you will keep pushing the copper until it cracks. A quick anneal and you can shape some more. I feel ya, you gotta become one with projects like this. I really was happy with how this project turned out and I learned a lot. Thanks for the watch Mike!
Great video! This is exactly the type of project I want to be able to make. I’ve been soldering in small sizes (like jewelry etc) but have always wanted to learn welding sculptural pieces, only where I live courses on the subject are astronomically expensive (as usually paid for by employers looking to advance an employees technique) and very few and far apart, plus usually don’t get into anything artful or decorative.
Definately subscribing and checking out your channel more to learn the difference between what I know of soldering and this.
As I’m already wondering basic stuff like why I can’t see you using flux etc.
I won’t bother with questions I’m sure your other videos answer ;)

Thanks Gnarbel Jo! I really appreciate the comment and subscribe! Yeah I hear ya, the price of everything these days is getting insane....especially things like copper. You should check out the how to braze video and it will explain the flux you mentioned. Some brazing rods have flux already on the brazing rod and some either require flux or do not depending on what you are brazing. If you have access to your own equipment, I would recommend just trying some sculpture on your own....save your money for materials. If you follow the steps in this video, you can totally come up with your own custom designed brazing sculpture. If you do, I'd love to see some pics, just dm my instagram. Cheers from Canada eh!

Good video but if you cannot get hold of copper I find old coffee cans are a great source of material and then you can solder the parts rather than weld or base the parts😁

Can I use an oxy acetylene torch to repair a bronze statue using a silicon bronze rod? Most people use TIG welding, but it just too expensive for me. Everyone talks about bronze brazing, but not bronze brazing BRONZE. I wonder if it’s not possible because the statue and the rod have the same melting temperature.
It should be possible but with it's own issues. The base material will suck a lot of the heat away so you will need to preheat and use a bigger tip than usual. Make sure the base material is clean and don't use the inner cone of the flame to heat the metal. You may have to ask your supplier what type of brazing rod you should use. Good luck!

Hi there! Any advice for a goldsmith/silversmith looking to do some large scale projects? I'm currently working with an oxy/propane setup and a smith little torch. (I've also got a maap gas torch I've busted out for big projects here and there.) Do I need to upgrade big time, or can I limp by braising bigger copper pieces with my current setup?
It's hard to know how capable your setup is, best thing to do is just try it. I bet you will be able to as long as the pieces you are brazing aren't too thick...which won't be a problem as the cost of metal is way too much to use thick copper anyways. If the copper never gets red then the copper is dumping the heat faster than you can apply it....if this happens then your setup is too weak. Thanks for the watch!
Wow but what if I only have a BBQ propane tank? Can I still plug in a regulator and torch handle?
You need a lpg regulator, lpg torch, lpg rated hose....but yes. Cutting, brazing, and heating are all possible with propane but not good for gas welding. An Acetylene flame creates a cleaning action while welding and propane doesn't. So you can do this project with your BBQ bottle....and then sell it to buy top sirloin to cook on your BBQ after!
Wondering when brazening the stem on you didn't burn a hole thru because of a lower oxygen level? I might have missed that
No oxygen levels are the same but it's more about where you are directing the heat and is it constant or focused on one spot. Focus heat on the thicker piece and keep it moving until both pieces are the same temperature, then add your braze. If you keep it on the thinner piece or stay on one spot you'll burn through. Hard to say with art pieces. You have to add the cost of materials too, in this case the copper alone was probably $150 to $200. This piece might go for $750 to $1200, but could go for more if it was commissioned. Thanks for the watch!

Why didn't you use an air hammer/chisel and turn the air way down. It will be like drawing instead of stepping.
I try to use basic tools so that more people can do the project at home. Most people don't have a compressor and an air hammer. That's a good idea though, you do a lot of metal art? Thanks for the watch!

Metalworking 101: brazing IS NOT welding.
You might want to change your misleading title.
It's not fusion welding. Brazing is brazing. The series is how to become a welder and has other processes that are not welding too like plasma cutting too. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel.
Can you braze stainless to aluminium ?
Yeah you should be able to do it with an aluminum brazing rod but you may need to do a specific cleaning and flux process in order for it to work. Cheers!
