Written in February of 1935 at the age of twenty-four, the two modal Chorales for organ in Greek Dorian (II) [modern Phrygian: a minor scale with a flattened second] and Phrygian (III) [present Dorian: a minor scale with a raised sixth] occupy a special place not merely within the œuvre of the notable composer; but also fill a coveted niche amongst the great volumes of French instrumental repertoire for the organ.
Of a profound formulation, the duo strikingly exude a solemn character as per Alain's grave wont in his contemplative pieces.
The composer's interest in the modes and scales spewed from his music history and musicology professor at the Conservatoire de Paris, Maurice Emmanuel (1862-1938); who undertook an especial interest in ancient music, particularly of the Greeks and Hindus. Alain's couple were premièred at the same institution on 18 March 1936; with the composer himself executing them on the organ.
Following a piano transcription among other versions, revision occurred in 1938; soon after, the fair copies were submitted to the publisher L. Philippo; who incorporated them as an instalment of the anthology series 'Le grand orgue' as stipulated in a contract with fellow editor H. Hérelle-hence, the pair emerged as the first works of Alain's that had been published; and one of but a minute catalogue of music published during his lifetime.
Regarding the interpretation of the twin pieces, Helga Schauerte indicates that the tempi are not to be executed too lethargically-the composer himself was notable for being very fluid with interpretation and bore an open-minded and congenial personality.
Écrits en février 1935 à l'âge de vingt-quatre ans, les deux Chorals modaux pour orgue en grec dorien (II) [phrygien moderne : une gamme mineure avec une seconde aplatie] et phrygien (III) [actuel dorien : une gamme mineure avec une sixte surélevée] occupent une place particulière non seulement dans l'œuvre du compositeur remarquable; mais aussi occuper un créneau convoité parmi les grands volumes du répertoire instrumental français pour orgue.
D'une formulation profonde, le duo dégage de façon saisissante un caractère solennel selon l'habitude grave d'Alain dans ses pièces contemplatives.

En ce qui concerne l'interprétation des pièces jumelles, Helga Schauerte indique que les tempi ne doivent pas être exécutés avec trop de léthargie - le compositeur lui-même se distinguait par sa grande fluidité dans l'interprétation et sa personnalité ouverte d'esprit.

The modes are particularly special for how they strongly perplex and confuse me at times, and probably others, when not being used to the coming passages. I got the effect strongly when I first tried them. Its a spectacular effect.

Beautifully performed, and that second Chorale had a strange registration. I think I would use it as a prelude or a postlude for the Maundy Thursday service during Holy Week - or possibly for a Good Friday service.
It captures the mood perfectly.

Though the aforementioned example is not exactly 'strange' as some others present in his works, it is to be pointed out that Alain was certainly notable for his unusual and idiosyncratic approach to the art of organ registration; exemplified numerous times throughout his prolific œuvre.
