    One thing I find helpful when gluing in magnets is cutting off a small tab of plastic from a blister pack. I put the chain of magnets on one side of the plastic then a single magnet on the other. This lets me align the polarity on the magnets, poke the magnet in and then I just have to put my thumb on the plastic to hold it down and pull the chain of magnets back. Always pull the magnet chain away rather than sliding them off, as the magnet you're trying to place will attempt to pull itself towards the ones you're removing. It lets me use the excess magnets to ensure the polarity is correct when I place the magnet without accidentally flipping the magnet as I pull them off (and being transparent you'll see if it flips). As a bonus the glue won't dry instantly on the plastic the way it does with skin, which helps keep the mess to a minimum.

    A great model to magnetize is the Hive Tyrant. Flying and standing.
    Also the wings and head!

      It's just a shame they don't give you two of the ab pieces. It'd be so much easier if I could magnetise them where the torso connects to the abs instead of where the abs connect to the legs.

    • @TheDarkmore
      @TheDarkmore 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did this but the wings are so big and heavy that they sometimes cannot stay in the position I want and they spin a bit, which causes the magetized devouer arms to fall off... I used neomydium magnets, and I put 2-3 in the body so the connection is strong, but the magnets can twist and spin on each other, jeah the surface of the magnet is really shiny and has no resistance, maybe I should sand of the protective surface from the magnets so they get a better grip?

    • @David-And-A-Half
      @David-And-A-Half 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheDarkmore If you put pins in behind the sockets on the wings you can sort of disguise them. The magnet will hold the wing on and the pin will hold it in place. www.miniwargaming.com/content/magnetizing-hive-tyrant-swarmlord-flyrant has some good pictures. Personally I used really large magnets that take up the entire socket. They held the wings in place really well but they were hard to align properly and they were so powerful they kept pulling the magnets out of the wings.

      Thx for the tip, I will try to pin the wings. This is actually a bigger issue for my fully magnetised 3 Harpy/Crone which has bigger wings, but the pins can help out I think. Thanks again!

    Checked ebay out for magnets and was abit overwhelmed from the options, could you give exact name which magnets you bought for space marines and terminators for example? Lovely looking minis :)

      Try Power Magnets/Rare Earth Magnets, and so on. Army Painter, Zinge.co.uk, even Puppets of War provides small magnets that are pretty strong. I usually buy from them and not from eBay.

    I've been experimenting with a novel use for magnets which I think you will appreciate Luke. I'm patiently assembling a Guard army of my own design, and magnetising the vehicles so they come apart and look damaged or destroyed, but whole and intact otherwise. Idea is that as the game goes on the army looks the part, cinematically. If that sounds intriguing, I'd love to challenge you - I think it would work well in a bat rep. Let me know.

    thanks for that I'm off to buy 2000 0.5 thick x 4mm diameter magnets and same for 1mm x 2mm diameter. But say you were wanting to magnetize say an Imperial Knight what spec of magnet would you use for the arms and arm weapons ?

    • @sapper12b71
      @sapper12b71 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use the ones that are about the size of a watch battery, just a bit smaller. Sry I threw away everything but the magnets and the foam trade in which they're held so I don't know the exact dimensions. Also this is a three year old comment so I suppose that you either figured it out by now or will never see your respond to this LOL but if you do and you would like me too, I have an accurate calibrated millimeter ruler then I would gladly measure the magnets for you and tell you the precise measurements.

    • @StrikingScorpion82

      maybe 2x2 or James uses 4x1s. I have a selection of all different sizes so I have plenty of options:)

    Hi! I am going to magnetize the new sylvaneth hero arch-revenant's wings..do u think 2x1 mm is strong enough or is it better to have 3x1?

  • @odgeUK
    @odgeUK 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Magnet strength seems to have an "N" value. A scan of ebay and N35 and N42 are common. Do you know what you are using for your 0.5mm x 4mm magnets?

    • @StrikingScorpion82
      @StrikingScorpion82  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would go for the highest 'N' possible for more strength:)

    • @odgeUK
      @odgeUK 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That figures. They get a bit more expensive after N35 so was just trying to save myself a quick buck by seeing how low you can go (more miniatures, less magnets!)

    • @StrikingScorpion82
      @StrikingScorpion82  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    is magnetizing any good for fiddly stuff like skitarii I'm very nervous about it.

    • @StrikingScorpion82
      @StrikingScorpion82  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well be careful...no need to spoil your minis. I only magnetize sometimes as it is fiddly:)

    • @MalcadorTheSigilite
      @MalcadorTheSigilite 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** my thought exactly I wanted to customise it a little given it's quiet thematic and flexible and can cut down on cost but didn't want to ruin it especially given I'm new to the tabletop

    • @StrikingScorpion82
      @StrikingScorpion82  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes true. You can always magnetise later even after painting if you do it carefully:) Save the spare bits for later magnetising:)

    • @MalcadorTheSigilite
      @MalcadorTheSigilite 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      my though exactly but still nervous as hell given my inexperience and it's fiddly as all hell

    • @Octovol
      @Octovol 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've just recently started back in 40k with skitarii and decided i would magnetize my vanguard/ranger heads and arms so i could switch between the two. It was fiddly and adds a lot of extra time on to building them, but given that have the exact same special weapon options and only the heads and weapons differentiate them i like that i have the choice between the two without having to keep like 8 units of models when i may only ever field 4 at once. Saved me a fortune.
      My concern at the moment is painting them with stuff that moves around lol. I used 2x1mm magnets on the heads and both arm sockets.
      I also magnetized all the weapon options for the dunecrawler and the cognis manipulator as that's quite an expensive upgrade. Same for the tech priest. It's definitely fiddly and time consuming but worth it if you want the flexibility and don't want to duplicate your squads. The skitarii boxes are virtually all dual unit boxes so the possibilities for switching between two distinct but similar units is quite great.
