- There 2024 Mecum auction held in Kissimmee Florida did not disappoint when it came to Honda ATV's! Like last year, there were a couple dozen Honda three wheelers sold. Some went for a reasonable amount. Like we've seen a couple times now, most sold for more than they're worth (based on the type of restoration).
The jewel of the auction was the 1989 TRX 250R in the thumbnail that wend for just over $23,000!! It was a true restoration and if any machine deserved that payout, it was this one.
Then, our friend the Red Chain Bandit was up to his usual tricks... but this time he's trying to disguise himself... It appears that he's getting away from using red chains and painting foot peg bolts red... but he can't seem to break his habit of picking the absolute cheapest parts to use for his restorations... AND... he's taking pictures of his bikes in a new location, but I was able to confirm it was him...
Like before, I go through almost every Honda ATC that was auctioned and give my 2 cents on it. This info is worth what you paid for it... so take it all with a grain of salt. And I'm critiquing these through the lens of a collector who strives for machines that are as original as possible. So, it's not that these are junk, it's that they were "restored" as cheaply as possible in order to maximize profit at an auction.

Love the forensics of the red chain bandit😂😂😂😂😂
Hey Preston! Really appreciate you taking the time to review these auction results. Must admit that I am a victim of the Red Chain Bandit for an ‘86 350X from Mecum Indy 2022. Bought it online based off of pictures. After purchasing, reached out to the Red Chain Bandit for any info he could share about the machine with no response. Shoddy workmanship and poor quality from Sugarloaf but happy to have people like you, Mike Palmgren, Bruce Alleman, & Curtie Eldredge to help make it right. Thanks brother!!!
Happy to do it man! Trying to spread awareness! I'm sorry about what happened to you!
Loved the detective work to figure out the new photo location that the RCB resorted to using!!!
Is this the support group for victims of the red chain bandit?? Still working on my restored 83 250r?🤔 Thanks for keeping people informed!!
😂 😂 Mine didn’t come with a red chain but he did throw in a severely bent rear axle for good measure! 😮
My 83 250r oem tank that was repainted had rust and leafs, pine needles old gas etc. you know the typical procedure for a restoration!
I see what's going on now. The red/no chain bandit is buying bikes that are somewhat stock but not running, selling all the big ticket parts (plastics, wheels, etc...) then taking 30% of that money and "rebuilding" these bikes. I use rebuilding loosely.
Go back and look at the headlight bezel rubbers on that 350x, they were for 39mm fork tubes not 35mm. Lol my favorite of your vids sir!
Another GREAT Video!
Thanks again for showing us the real differences that we do not know about.
I Learned something watching this.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for letting me know! I'm glad you learned something too. I'm still learning as well!
Are you a part time detective Preston? Good work buddy, always enjoy video's. The no chain bandit strikes again.
Im a 250R Enthusiast and have owned several and currently own a full custom 2022 Walsh build, for sale by the way. That being said how did a restoration go for 23,000?
It's crazy, right?! I don't know man... I just don't know.
That 1989 TRX250R for $23k I would buy if I had the money, and it would be dirty as HELL the very first day I buy it because I would NOT be putting it on a shelf and staring at it. These machines deserve to be ridden, they deserve to see the woods, they deserve to play in the dirt!! Yes, it’s gorgeous, but there is no reason to buy one if you’re not going to ride it.
Sure you would.
Air cooled CR 500 was a one year only in 1984.
Great video as always I'm like you if your going to fix a 250r up for auction please do it the correct way and make it spec right down to the bolts.dont half ass a honda do it the right way!!
Amen!!! I appreciate it!!
33:29 air cooled.... wow thats a step backwards... even if it is 500cc
This guy has messed up more hondas maybe he needs to start working on Yamaha and not hondas I'm happy that you can pick apart this guy like it's nothing at all keep up the great work and videos
Thank you brother!!! I'll keep at it!!
21:23 a shifter!!!!!!! He really turned over a new leaf... can you see the raised little area with the shift patter cast into it on the flywheel cover?
25:35 single piston brake caliper, that guy is a tarnish on all our reputations
These are great videos for anyone looking to buy! Great idea and excellent job!!
Thank you very very much! I think I'm going to start doing a Facebook Marketplace version...
31:14 can even steal a cap off the riding mower for the fork valve stem
I think hoses are to low nice catch
Barrett Jackson and Mecum have helped drive prices up on cars for several years and now ATVs and ATCs, making it rough on common folks like myself.. 👍👍
I'm with ya man... I feel your pain!
Ive watched one action you reviewed, not all but this is my second an Kinda Cool 👽👍🏻✨
Thanks for watching brother!
Hey Preston, have you ever thought about doing restorations for money? You clearly have an eye and ability to do it! Blessings!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Hey man! Thank you for the compliment. I have thought about it, but I'm just not sure. I definitely couldn't do it on the side of what I do because I just don't have enough spare time... I feel like my hourly rate would have to be pretty pricey too if it were to replace my regular job... so that would more than likely make it too expensive for 95% of people if I were to do work for them. I'd absolutely love it though!
Hammer Down brother
The reason that trx250r sits so high in the back is it has the wrong dog bone for the shock. He's running a 88 dog bone with 86 swingarm. Won't handle right also could have the wrong shock which makes it even worse
Hey I was just wondering, when you say you’re “intimate” with 3 wheelers, what exactly do you mean by that?
man thats wild! I've got a 88 I'm building a billet cased 380 lynx for her.
It blows my mind how the values have changed on this stuff throughout the years. I remember a time when they were basically given away if they weren’t running. I’m one who just keeps their junk running and factory correct isn’t much of a concern. But if I were in the market for something of higher caliber, I would certainly be doing my homework.
Prices got insane
It is crazy!
Clean 200x
The sissy bar identifies as a grab bar. They used to call my uncle the "deal killer".....something tells me buyers like this content....sellers....not so much. ;)
This Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, Fl is like 30 mins from me. On Facebook market in my area, most people think they are the same as the Mecum Auction being that most of the Honda Three Wheelers on Facebook Market are averaging $5000 for a 350X, a 250 BR, or even a 200X, 250R's are like 6-7k and not even close to being in decent shape. They can keep them for those asking prices.
Must depend on your area. I see 200x 250r 350x every day rider machines 2k 3k really nice 5k 6k
21:47 seat looks thick like 86
When I was building mine, I bought one of those stupid grab bars because in the picture he doesn’t show it being so silly looking and there’s no way I would put that on my trike and I let him know how stupid it looked
26:57 check out them headlight bezel straps, yea baby
Man... how did I miss that! There's just so much to see on his builds...
Are those black zip ties holding that 86 200x headlight on? Haha
21:59 is there too many warning labels on that headlight?
That's not factory swingarm on rear but those drain lines are...❤
The 86 with the wrong carb didn’t even have a clamp on the boot to the air box. I’ve noticed he uses Allen head bolts on all of his engines.
Yeah, I noticed that too. I'm sure that's because they were the cheapest possible thing to use.
@@ThisOldTrike Clearly he doesn't own JIS screwdrivers
My honest opinion if you buy anything at a big auction like mecum you are probably paying too much.
Both of those 250R's had $40 ebay carbs as well
Crazy
SUNF bandit
Also very fitting!! He must get a quantity discount on all those tires.
What did you take that thumbnail picture with?
What's up Porter!! That's a screenshot from the Mecum website.
@@ThisOldTrike Nice! That’s a sick quad too
Yeah man, those 250R's were animals... they ruled the race scene for over a decade AFTER they stopped making them... Just a testament to how awesome they were. Maybe you and your dad could restore one of those next?!?!
@@ThisOldTrike That would be cool if we restored one!
@@porterbrownell Come over with your dad sometime and we'll get him wanting one... lol. How's the bike coming along?
39:20 and its not for aircraft
34:36 probably 7k reserve
Great episode
Thanks brother!!
17:20 engine is black
23k for 0 to 60 in 7 seconds lmao 😂
hey man those hoses were overflows and are meant to be hanging down so the fuel that drops doesnt get on the engine
I know what they're for. I was just unsure if they were that long when the machine came from the factory.
I enjoy these videos
Thanks brother!! I'll try to figure out how to do more. They're certainly easy on me to make!
Making it even worse for the average man to own a TRX or a ATC.
Yes sir. People are definitely getting priced out of the market, including myself!
Love these videos. I would love to see this same format for trikes on facebook market place and offer up or craigslist. Thanks for the videos. Right here. The fams asleep and get to enjoy this.
I like when you do these
Did the trx 250r in beginning have after market axle carrier and bearings with 450 400ex stuff?
Definitely my favorite videos u do sir!
Thanks brother! Pretty easy on me to make too. I don't have to line anything up... I don't have to wrench on anything... Maybe I should figure out a way to do more of these.
13:52 is that a d-a tank???? And has chrome lids on the air filter
Yeah, I wasn't sure so I didn't say anything.
@@ThisOldTrike I'm not sure if there is a way to tell.... im so glad everyone can throw away those hideous plastic tanks
Front tires on backwards?
No, that's correct. Looks weird I know, but that's correct.
Nice video! Thanks for posting!
The 86 200x has a 83-85 200x axle.
Good eye brother! There's just so many things to catch with his builds... I'd be embarrassed.
The red chain bandit takes a lot of them to auction
Who is the red chain bandit? T-R For short?🤣
Those are his initials. He, at one point, called his shop the "250R Candy Shop"... He's screwed dozens of people over...
@@ThisOldTrike yeah i remember that clown, i almost was fooled by a few of his R’s a few years ago before i got mine but even with my juvenile trained eyes compared to yours could spot his shady aerosol overalls from Minnesota to PA
Awesome video! At least these machines are being saved ❤
Better than nothing. But I do agree it is deceiving to put these machines in the auction with these parts.😢
You would hate to see what I have been doing with mine 😅😢
Looking forward to the next video!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not going full concourse restoration on my machines... but the problem with this guy is, it's more than just the cosmetics. I have heard at least 10 horror stories from people who have bought machines from this guy, either through auctions or through direct sales. The machines are misrepresented and turn into a Pandora's box of issues almost immediately. He is legitimately ripping people off, but the machines "look good" if you don't know what you're looking at or if you don't dig too far... it's just sad.
Here
Thank you sir!
Good stuff Preston 🤙🏻
