yes, it was Jimmy Hill who invented the "football panel". ITV were discussing who to have as their expert summariser for the upcoming 1970 World Cup, and he suggested that instead of just 1 person they should have 3 or 4, to get a spirited discussion going, and it has been with us ever since
This was the first World Cup aired in colour. 1966 was the first to be aired live but in black & white. This is great coverage & at the time people watching this must have thought that we are walking into a new age.
I know it is nine months later but it is worth remembering in 1966 BBC and ITV shared resources and for the first time EVERY World Cup game was broadcast (not always live) using electronic cameras. The Directors for the BBC and ITV, Bryan Cowgill and Bob Gardam (who I had the privilege of doing work experience with a million years ago) showed the rest of the world how to cover football in this new electronic medium. It changed the way football was televised around the world forever even though it was in monochrome. I know Ken Wolstenholme's "They Think It's All Over" is in the national consciousness but the BBC archives show more than a few viewers were displeased as were BBC executives, when comparing his commentaries to those done in the group matches by David Coleman (who anchored coverage only from the semi-finals onwards, before that he did commentaries on some of the group games.) By 1970, Coleman was the pick of the BBC to do the Final in Mexico, but Wolstenholme applied legal pressure. Despite the offer of a large pay increase...he left in May 1971 after Coleman had the backing of Bryan Cowgill to do the FA Cup FIna lfrom 1972 onwards,

The technology was changing rapidly & the image quality from World Cup to world Cup was so contrasting. I mean I could watch footage from the 1970, 1978, 1982, 1986 & 1990 World Cups all day. Now it’s different. You can’t tell the difference between the 2010 World Cup & 2018 tournament. It was like the climates locally were being beamed across.

I remember watching these programmes during the World Cup of June 1970 as a 16 year old student, trying to revise for my GCE O Levels which were taking place at the same time! I think this clip comes from Friday 19 June, the day my exams ended, and 2 days before the Final on Sunday 21 June.

Wow, stuff like this tended to get wiped and the tape reused in the UK . They tended to only keep stuff that was going to be rebroadcast at at a later date so amazing and fortunate it survived. I'm assuming it was 1 inch or 2 inch in quadruplex vt and the quality of the recording is amazing despite it being half a century old. A really interesting insight into that era. And Jimmy Hill's cravat is hugely laughable now. Pat Crerand was 31 when this was recorded and Bob Mcnab was 26 and fortunately both gentlemen are still with us at the time of writing. I was very surprised to see Bob Mcnab only won four caps for England, the last in 1969. He would go on to win the double with Arsenal in the 1970-71 season.
The closing theme tune is reminiscent of the track 'Plunge In' that was used as Scotsport theme throughout the 80s and has been revived in the past few years

Mexico twice or so. This is the home of fitba. Why is there no campaign & what is behind it. Match violence is near zero & its long before Brexit. Eurovision Song Contest is another backlash. Boot out the foreign players, put up two fingers to Euro & World Cup fixtures & we will enjoy our own matches & greats, also bring back the old pitches & ball & stop knocking down our historic stadiums too. Jack S I agree. The Studio and the design look much more modern than in 1974 and 1978. The design in 1974 looks more old fashioned than in 1970. And I also noticed that the studio looked much smaller in 1974 and especially in 1978.

England didn't qualify and so budgets and facilities were cutback somewhat including sets. Remember England went into 1970 as the holders and expectations were quite high. Hard to imagine now of course. But things were reined in somewhat in later tournaments.

Not true! Both 1954 and 1958 were broadxast live here. 1962 in Chile was a djmifferent matter! The long distance technology was not in place,
