That's a great video Grace. But, I think we can focus more on reducing our need for NEW clothes, new stuff. There are plenty of OLD beautiful clothes which you already have in your wardrobe (or which you can get on a flea market).
As a lawyer I used to buy new clothes, especially shirts, all the time. Now I'm travelling around Indonesia and Philippines and I see that I can live with only one backpack of things (and local people live with even less).
Browsing malls/online shops, looking for new fashionable clothes, that's just a HABIT.
YOU CAN CHANGE THAT HABIT.

They don't really comment on the level of pollution involved in pulp mills (we have a pulp mill a few hours from my home that makes a product used for fabric and the pollution is SO nasty, you smell / see the smog a long time before arriving in the community... we don't _need_ to buy new, especially when it comes to jackets and denim which are made to last years.
Check out a used clothing shop, you might be surprised at the quality. (depending on your area and luck!)
My favorite pair of skinny jeans came from a thrift store, it's amazing what you can find!

Wait.. cotton is bad because we have to use water to grow the cotton BUT the circular processing uses wood pulp which requires trees. Those need to be grown and they're slow to grow and also use a lot of water. Cutting down large amount of trees is also bad for the environment in regards to CO2 levels. Synthetic fibres are also made from petroleum products which isnt a renewal resource.
Crap story if you ask me. I'd rather water the farm fields and allow the water to go back into the ground and recycle itself through evaporation as we do with the thousands of other things we grow for say FOOD! Use of water is a poor excuse unless the factories are wasting water in production instead of recycling. This story only says growing cotton type water not production water. Ugh...
I bought 2 bags of Almonds that took a few hundred gallon of water to grow . I saw a movie and the young African child from a village visiting in America asked . Why do you poop in your drinking water ?
I had no idea, and the image of the river was devastating. I started buying my jeans from second hand or consignment stores a few years ago jusr bc its easy to find a high end pair for under $10. When i found that out i couldn't justify spending 200 for the same thing. Now they feel even more valuable. Thanks for sharing the info. We need to start somewhere.

The easiest way to help with the environment is to either buy less, or more higher quality garment eg wait until sales go on in the summer or winter sales then you can buy Levi’s online for less than 30 euro or a good idea is to buy vintage of places like grailed Depop or even curated vintage store in your area or online the old Levi’s from the 80s and 90 were usually made in America or Canada and they are very high quality for the price you are paying

All clothing, food, and many resources use much water. Majority of things I own in clothing are hand me downs. It is privilege to buy newer things.
Grace is amazing. I've been a fan of her and her sister Amelia for years. Was truly delighted to see BBC working with Grace on an original series.

Ive been wearing jeans since I was A kid(im 50). Its all I wear. Not going to spend 200$ on A pair of jeans,couldn't afford it anyway. Besides my jeans last years.

Tomas Alfredo Vullo yea the vintage ones use higher quality denim and are made in either Canada or America
paraelwares you should be careful buying jeans if they only last a few months you can buy vintage or new Levi’s and if you wait for the big sales in summer or winter you can get them for around 30 40 euro plus they last long and some Levi’s are part of the waterless series which use a lot less water than there normal jeans just go onto the Irish or European Levi’s site and you can find them on sales a lot of the time.

What I'd like answered when this sort of topic is discussed is where the water used in clothes we buy in the UK is put after it's been used. How are we defining 'waste', here? If it's filtered and put back into the environment, then I'm not sure it's much of the issue that it's been lorded as.
Sure, there are still the LEDCs that don't have full control over the way their clothing manufacturers are disposing of the water, but can we state with absolute certainty that ALL water used by EVERY clothing manufacturer in EVERY country is unceremoniously dumped in all of our rivers?
Why does this program feel the need to show the damage in countries that don't necessarily supply all the clothing in the UK, US and other countries that they are trying to say are benefitting from this process with no thought for the environmental consequences and don't talk about how we're dealing with it in the UK or US or how our top suppliers are dealing with their used production water? I want absolute truth and transparency before I make any changes to my spending habits to ensure that I'm actually making a difference.
Otherwise I'm stopping myself buying from companies who's suppliers aren't actually an irresponsible part of the problem!
...I mean...isn’t the actual problem the pollution from improper dye disposal? A pair of good jeans is more durable and last a long time. Perhaps it’s helping us not purchasing as much pants you’d otherwise have to anyway.

ok, I like the general message of this vid... But, it's ironic they stood next to a swimming pool with up to 1,600,000 litres of DRINKING water (which makes 40 jeans) in which we pump chemical disinfectants and continually refill just so we can... have a swim!?! Plus all the energy we use to heat it. Just saying. 😎
yeah but swimming makes life really enjoyable for some and jeans are for a lot of people a sort of obvious clothing piece

The water isn't wasted, it's used to create garments. However, garments are often wasted by being bought, worn a few times and then discarded.

😅 and then there’s me having like 14 pairs of blue jeans, 12 pair of other coloured jeans, like black, grey and brown etc. And 11 pairs of pants. From chinos to cargo to joggers. And then I’m not even counting my shorts 😅😂.
But in my defence, I wear it all, I’ve been working parttime in fashion stores since I was 14. I’m now 25 and almost done with college. I’ve collected all sort of jeans and pants over the years from all different sort of brands. Some I have been wearing since I was 16.
But yeah if I could do it all over again. I would probably buy like six pairs of and pants. One raw selvedge denim to fade and make my own. An all black one, a grey one, a lighter blue for spring and summer and two pair of chinos.
Lets just use a pijamas pant instead if you ran out of jeans to save the earth
Insightful, but feeling guilty about wearing jeans isn’t really going to help. It would’ve been nice to highlight more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives and brands, and slo to name some of the worst offenders. Given that decent jeans can last for years if well cared for, I am personally far more concerned about the literal tons of cheap polyester (plastic) cloths that are purchased worn once and thrown out. Also, I do feel that natural fibres like Cotten and wools are the lesser of two evils because at least they are more easily recycled and repurposed.
All being said, this was really interesting and awareness is one of the biggest hurdles.

Couldn't we just skip the part of bleaching and coloring clothes? I can't find any video on you tube where I can see something like that. For sure it can be really tricky to look fashionable if i wear something which is not bleached and colored..or is it a question of killing some kind of bacteria
The 20-40000 litres of water to make a pair of jeans does NOT sound credible at all.
It's for the entire product cycle. Water that goes into growing denim, processing and washing. I worked for a textile firm and observed that washing 1 meter of denim alone took more than 150-200 liters of water. Each pair is washed multiple times before packing not to mention the water used in dyeing the fiber. It all adds up real quick.

@@honestlymars Normally its processed in Effluent Treatment Plants and released in to rivers or oceans (this water is not reused). Some companies invest in Mechanical Evaporators and RO Filtration which recover 80-90% of water. But that is rare due to the high cost of operations and installation of filtration plants. I am from India, collectively Bangladesh and us export a lot of denim fabric to other countries. Here filtration systems are practically non existent. I am not sure about UK based companies but i doubt if they have any regulations to avoid this. Primary ETP filtered water is not hazardous and can be released into natural water sources so that's what happens to most of it.
However this is only the water consumed in processing denim. The water used in growing denim and indigo plants are biggest contributors to this waste. I really don't see any way it could be recycled.
Its an argument similar to eating red meat vs vegetables.

Oh they take masses of water to grow, even with the likes of cabbages could be included within that, essentially thats what they are, also with forms of lettuces too they take an incredible amount of water to grow :)

It's not just denim, it's everything. All the things you buy are made whilst polluting the environment. And you can buy as much as you can because of this pollution and using basically slave labour in Asia. In general we need to consume way less, like, way way less, maybe reduce be stuff you buy to 10% from the typical person. When you need something, go to charity shops first, look on Freecycle, Gumtree etc, see if you can get that dress, sofa, table, jacket, or gift second hand. Only then consider new if you really need something and you can't find it secondhand.
