THE ILLUSTRATIONS OF HERBERT LEUPIN HD

  • It was far from easy deciding which of the many images of Herbert Leupin's to use in this video, for the simple reason that he was one of the most stylistically diverse illustrators I have yet covered. And as with the slightly older and not totally dissimilar fellow Swiss illustrator Niklaus Stoecklin, who recently featured on the channel, I find myself hoping that this video brings Leupin and his work greater recognition.

    I absolutely love advertising and poster illustrations from the 1940s and 50s. Herbert Leupin's work is among the best I've ever seen. I can't, however, say I admired his later works as much. Still, he had remarkably diverse styles. I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and your choice of music was perfect.

    I can’t understand why illustration is treated as a lesser art. In many cases illustrators are better artists than some of the big names in the art world. I’d love to know how big the original pieces are.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hello and thanks a lot for your comment, which naturally enough I completely agree with. In terms of his posters I don't know for sure but general practice in lithography at that time was to create the image the same size as it would be printed, So if we estimate the average poster would have been maybe 5ft by 3ft
      ( a generic guess on my part) that's how big the original image would have been too.

    What a wonderful collection of art! Now, as to the changes of stylistic treatment, I can't help wondering - and not necessarily to cut 'n' paste my own experiences and difficulties onto Herbert Leupin - but I wonder if - as you ponder upon - the changes were invention born of necessity? Since I have developed an essential tremor, maybe he had the same problem and was forced down different routes of visual expression to maintain sanity and his livelihood. A tremor need not be immediately visible, and can be concealed briefly - people wouldn't know I have one unless they actually saw me trying to write or draw. So, perhaps he kept it quiet and modified as far as he could, using his experience and keeping a weather eye on stylistic changes. Anything more intensely rendered would be kept to a minimum and the quirkier work eventually dominated. Anyway, he was a very clever man and I am grateful to learn of him. Thanks Pete!

      @petebeard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello and thanks for the comment. And it's an unfortunate coincidence for both of us, but I have had that condition too for over 30 years. But I think it's more likely he went where he did out of choice. Tremor - in my experience at least - isn't intermittent, and he carried on doing the more realistic works long after he began with the scribbles. But who knows?

    • @josefschiltz2192
      @josefschiltz2192 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@petebeard Mm. Mine started in my late forties and seems to have been inherited. Both my grandmother and uncle had it and it skipped my mother and landed on me! My mother really wasn't interested in art, somewhat of an injustice there as a tremor really made a difference for me!! Of course, as for Leupin, let's say if he did have a tremor, the later more rendered works could have been carried out under his direction by others under his employ, just to carry on the established brand name. That could be a reason for there not being any in depth information regarding either himself or his working practices. He was both lucky enough and hard-working enough to establish a brand that people liked and company directors who wanted more of it. he could have had his own little studio set-up like - for instance - Eisner and Iger back in the 40s and 50s. My own tremor results in a reasonably steady hand until I try to draw or write. I tend to tense up and, of course, that's when the tremor worsens. Annoying when I think I used to be able to draw with a Chinese brush! Looking at people just drawing and painting away tends to bring tears of frustration but, at the same time, I can't look away!

My posts between Soazburrolady and myself are on there on the subject. Won't say anymore on the subject here because, as you said, this isn't a health line. It is something however we could dearly do without as our means of expression has got effed up! 🙄🙄! I can do some stuff digitally, but it like drawing with a brick! The feedback you get from trad just ain't there! I can use a large blackboard and chalk to doodle away - like tinkling away by yourself with piano! - but it a bit difficult to sell artwork on a blackboard! I used to work on smaller and much smaller! And I don't want to render with scissors like Matisse.

      Personal reinvention in advertising means self confidence, imagine one after one works on demand - from top level brands - I want to supose you must use not only all of your capacity/knowledge rather than time production and a great array of graphic styles! In other way, making art, at his path, in a carrer ending seems the opposite to ad/stress/work.....

    Happy New Year Mr.Beard! Quite the prolific and varied work of Herbert Leupin's I particularly enjoy his more rendered pieces but even his most abstract work shows an amazing creative ability. He also exemplifies why artists shouldn't be afraid to experiment with their own style and should instead never fall from the pitfall of making the same painting over and over again.

    Through all the changes, Leupin seems to have maintained the rare talent for the instantly drawing-your-attention image, an image so "right" it often called forth a smile even without anything humorous about it. and I applaud an artist who is not afraid to change his style, although...one thinks (well I do, mostly because an old puzzle of his with many fond associations with my son and his high school circle, yet hangs on my wall) of Wysocki, who went from second-rate but at least mildly interesting ripoffs of Grandma Moses to fourth-rate and devoid of any redeeming quality cat pictures.

    Thanks, Pete, for the excellent presentation of this very inspiring Illustrator. Herbert Leupin was blessed with both skills and vision. I thought his scribble/gestural style was as powerful as his realistic representation. One could always see the point of view and read the message.

      @petebeard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks a lot for your appreciation and comment. And I agree that the scribbles were every bit as eloquent as the more representational stuff. Although I think towards the end he became a little too self indulgent.

      Hello and thanks for the video. The name Albert Hunter was one I'm not familiar with. So I headed for google but can't find any evidence other than a couple of tiny pictures which may or may not belong to him. Either way it looks like I won't be featuring him - I'm at the mercy of what's available on the internet.

      Hello again, and to follow up on our earlier musings I feel that the general self indulgence of his art when he had finally given up commercial work sort of underlines the point. Illustrators work for clients first and themselves second.

    Wow. I agree, Pete; Leupin's stylistic diversity is amazing. But, of, course, the craftsmanship is still there. It also brings up a side issue worth exploring,sort of flipping the coin: that the clients Leupin worked with were willing to accept such diversity. As you know (at least in today's world) advertising feeds upon itself so much that everything begins to look the same. Find one look that works and everyone jumps on the band wagon. I'll go out on a limb and say that there is no limit to the talent and diversity of artists working today but it's the limited vision in visual advertising that makes it all so dull looking with "cookie cutter" images. Wonder what kind of discussions/inut the advertising execs had, if any. So the question remains: were advertising executives more willing to take chances and use more creative visuals than we see today? Curious to hear any opinions. As always, Pete, an enlightening and educational-and just beautiful art to look at!-video. Hope your New Year is going well. Cheers to you and the missus!

      @petebeard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Doug and thanks for your comment and considered reflections on the state of advertising. I suspect (but don't know for sure) that Leupin and his contemporaries had a much more direct relationship with his clients, without the supposed psychological claptrap that became prevalent with Madison Avenue, and the intervention of the various denizens of ad agencies, all of whom would have their say. Simplicity and aesthetic cnsideration. Works every time, but they don't seem to be happy with that. And of course illustration in modern advertising is very rare indeed. When teaching I used to encourage my students to kill photography students whenever they had the chance. I was only half joking. Best wishes to you and yours.

      @petebeard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've considered him as a subjsct and its possible he will appear in the unsung heroes of illustration series. But in truth he was far more an artist than he was an illustrator and there are just not enough images, other than his vast number of portraits (which of course are art rather than illustration) to enable me to make a full video. But thanks for the suggestion.
