DUDE IM A HUGE FAN! i just started watching your channel today and i have watched your videos since 10 AM this morning, im still a rather new drummer, any tips you could give me?
I don't have a drumset at home though or a space for one. And one song I need to learn for church soon is Oceans by hillsong. I saw Coopers drum cover of it that's how I found his channel. Any tips for that particular song (I only get to practice once a week at church)

When a musician is in the "zone" he/she is not even part of this "world" anymore. Different people give different "reactions" when they are in this "zone" place... when they are in their own world and you no longer exist, it is just them and the music. When you reach this "place" you are definitely "high" as the drug called music takes you over.

Most songs after this album, that is. AJFA drum tracks are harder because of their speed and 17 different time signature changes.
basic = good. AC/DC = simple beats, simple guitar licks but produce legendary "music". No song is "beginner or advanced" level.
If a beginner plays "twinkle twinkle little star" he/she is a NOOB...... not because the "song" is a beginner song, it is because the musician is a beginner. Now.... if an advanced player plays that same song they will add "skill" to that "simple song" and now that simple little NOOB song sounds AWESOME.
I find that the "slow boring songs" are the HARDEST songs to play. I say this because if you play the faster pieces you are given more room for FUCKUPS. If you do a run of 15 32nd notes.... if you miss one on that run but you continue as if nothing happened = more than likely it will go unnoticed. Now.... play that "slow boring song"..... if you fuck up even ONCE, that mistake is amplified and it sticks out like a bright yellow dot trying to hide on a black page.
One of the best examples would be "Amazing Grace". It is slow, all the notes are "together" so you are not running all over your instrument to "play" it yet I have heard some AMAZING versions of it. So this simple NOOB song is actually quite "challenging" even for a more advanced player because if you simply just "play the notes" then..... its not so good. Add in advanced "technique and mechanics" of whatever instrument you choose to play it on and you "unlock" the potential of that otherwise slow and noobish song.
Take a wild super fast drum solo where the player becomes a maniac as he goes crazy on his drums. Ya, its fast and wild... and if you can reproduce it, it is STILL just a wild man going to town on some drums. One of the best "solos" for drums IMO is the solo from InaGodaDivida. It is not super fast or really even "fast" at all but the emotion from that solo is AMAZING.
One of the best quotes I heard a drummer say is "Honestly, if you are a drummer and you can do this (as he plays 2 notes over and over) and have people dancing.... your a fuckin' badass". That one quote explains so much. Keep it simple stupid.

ANYONE playing solo and playing the EXACT notes = blah. I almost expect the one playing to "inject" a "personal touch" to it. Hell..... listen to the original artist playing his OWN piece at different times and even THEN you will still get that injection of personal changes to the "original". Listen to them live here, then go listen to them live again over there = 2 different variations of the original piece. One concert they may be pumped up and totally in the "zone" and you will even get a HUGE dose of "wrong playing".
I agree with you, but it goes beyond even "just a jam out session". If I learn a piece, naturally I will learn from the original tune or music but once I get the basics of the piece down, it starts to "change" weather it is due to "I think it sounds better if I do this" to making the weird "mechanics" of a certain spot smoother by doing something different and does not detract from the "piece" that is supposed to be played.
Face it if you hear the EXACT notes EXACTLY as the sheet music is written EVERY single time = the world of music in general would be rather BLAND. Don't get me wrong, I have heard some "personal flare" that totally BUTCHERED the original piece beyond the point of enjoyment where it sours the "experience".
I love violin/fiddle. I heard an AMAZING player do an out of this world version of Orange Blossom Special. I heard the same guy playing it again and he injected too much of "himself" into it that "Orange Blossom Special" was pretty much completely LOST as his personal injections kicked the "song" out the door and you are now listening to him "jamming out". Even though it was still AMAZING, the expectation of OBS and it's non existence took the "enjoyment" out of it. It is kind of like a "remake" of an awesome classic movie where they change it so much , it no longer resembles the original movie. If they would have simply changed the name of the movie, the movie would be awesome but because they advertised it to be that new and improved modern remake of that old classic you watched 500 times, that awesome movie they made now SUCKS, all because of the "Title".
Moral of the story is inject yourself into the piece you are playing, but do not erase the piece completely WITH your "changes".
It might sound like I am flaming you David, but it is directed more to the original poster, I just had to add to yours :)
