The sad thing about Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is that much like Sonic '06, it was rushed into the market without properly testing and feels incomplete, but this time, it took Sega one month to make this port.
How SEGA should fix this game: Make themselves a difference engine and rework it. In Anniversary mode, there are new levels and you can use the Spin Dash. Make new music. Any other ideas?
even mariotehplumber fell through the wall in the special stage when he played this game. except after he went through the wall he went to a goal. his reaction was gold
Actually, it was because Sonic Team used the Sonic Advance engine which was designed for the Advance games not the Genesis games. This resulted in slowdown due to too many objects (it loads stuff beyond the visible screen). Also the SNES processor was just as powerful as the Genesis ("blast processing" was mostly curved marketing) and the GBA slightly surpasses that.
Did you record this with a Game Boy Player for the GameCube? If yes, isn't there an option to zoom in closer? Other than that a nice Anniversary Edition Review. I already liked your first review of this, but this one's even better.
The first thing I noticed was the slower frame rate, what the hell ? How did they screw up one of the most aspects of the whole game ? Like you said the damn game is slow as hell and the dull sound effects and irritating MIDI music make it even worse.
1. Music is not the only thing wrong with this port. 2. I guess you missed the parts when he showed how badly the game was slowing down in Scrap Brain, Starlight, Labyrinth, and Marble Zone. Lag is everywhere in this game and it never lets up.
1. Yes, very poorly implemented physics. Sonic is supposed to gradually slow down but he doesn't stop at all in this port. 2. I call bullshit when you say you didn't encounter any issues at all in this game. 3. His review, he can do what he wants. 4. How? Resizing it makes it easier to see what's coming ahead of you. 5. The GBA has a great soundchip, listen to the Sonic Advance series music. This game has no excuse. This port is horrible, get over it.
BTW, the iphone version that was redone by Christian Whitehead is superb! I hardly even notice the touch controls, it's completely playable and looks sweet.
1:27 I like how they show the Labyrinth zone as the last picture. Good fucking luck seeing any god damn thing else because this fucking game... I just fucking snapped my god damn DS in half. THANKS SEGA FOR THE WORST SONIC GAME EVER!
This is a good update to your original review, although I still find the original to be funny as hell! BTW, for those who want to play an official version of Sonic 1 with the Spin Dash, get Sonic Jam for the Saturn.
That is FALSE! The GBA and SNES may had a similiar GPU but the GBA has a 16MHZ ARM CPU and SNES had a 3MHZ Motorola CPU Stealth took advantage of the GBA CPU and made it run more smoothly via a hack and the original Instruments for sound..
That was a great review! Thanks, I never bought this game back when it was released on account of already owning the genesis copy, now I'm thankful I saved my money.
i think I know why this port sucks, don't u remember sonic advance where there aren't enemies everywhere, well this port was created with that SAME engine and the worst part they released another game with THE EXACT SAME NAME
Also, Live To Win" in the beginning, AWESOME song! Probably my favorite song to put in boss battle videos! Thank you for including the song because now I know it plus I just subscribed:D.
I recall in your 1000 subs special video that your remake review of this game would be open to friends only. But then again, that would decrease your views and subscriber gain, so I guess that move would be un-wise.
That's how it is with most current gen games. You pay $50-60 to experience a pretty short game, then you gotta pay extra for DLC if you want a longer game.
The thing is, in 2007, I bought the game expecting it to be good. I've played Sonic 1 on many different platforms. This version greatly disappointed me. And telling other people about this game while giving harsh criticism will entice other Sonic fans not to buy this game.
Right, the yes parts. 1: Yes, I played Sonic 1. 2: Yes, I played it on the Mega Drive, (Genesis otherwise) It was GODLIKE. 3. And Yes, I got the Gameboy Advance, I only had 2 games otherwise. At least I avoided this Genesis version like the plague. Now the no parts. 1: No, this version isn't perfect at all. 2: And that's all of the No Parts.
I still do reviews, just not this particular series. But with my channel's 10th Anniversary coming up, I've got some exciting announcements later this year. Stay tuned. ;)
The thing is, Stealth (who is a very known programmer in the Sonic community) ultimately made a much better port of Sonic 1 for the GBA. And this was an one man's work. There was absolutely NO excuse for this abomination that has come to be "Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis." Check for "Sonic 1 GBA port by Stealth" on TH-cam to see what I'm talking about.
Two reasons: 1) To commemorate my 5th Anniversary on TH-cam 2) I feel that a lot of my older reviews from 2007-2008 do not hold up very well. In those reviews, I either come off as either really whiny and nitpicky or make them look like a really boring Let's Play.
I agree completely. When this game came out, people were already bummed out by the fact that Sonic 06 sucked due to being rushed out for a November release, so Sonic Genesis was the urine flavored icing on the shit cake. Thankfully, Sonic Team and Sega would make up for their mistakes years later with Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, Sonic Colours, Sonic Generations and most recently, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2.
Cursing makes me feel good when I play a really bad game. My videos are not for children and if people get offended by them, they can simply click the Big Red X on the top right of the window.
The stealth port of Sonic The Hedgehog ACTUALLY sounds like the original and ACTUALLY plays like the original with Tails and Knuckles added for benefit. Now, the stealth port of Sonic 1 isn't complete, but it's very good. Yes, a hacker did far better than THESE jokers.
For Anniversary Mode, there was so much more they could have added. Why not give the option to have Tails following Sonic? Why not give you the ability to turn into Super Sonic after collecting the emeralds? Why not add the homing attack? Why not add the lightspeed dash?
The version of Sonic 1 on Sonic Classic Collection for DS really makes up for this. It plays much more like the original. Gameplay still isn't 100% smooth (although it mostly depends on what model DS you use), but the speed was always consistent enough to keep the game playable. It sounded a lot more like the original game too. This is what the GBA version should have been like. Anyway, I really enjoyed this review.
if youre talking about the megadrive version then the music is alot slower but the gameplay just a little bit. About the GBA version there is no difference
what better way to celebrate a milestone of sonic then to take his first game, emulate it horribly on hardware that isn't capable of doing a straight emulation, and making it worse then already released sonic titles on the system
Well yeah. I know it has problem, I said it did. Honestly, it's not a very good game. I mainly meant that it wasn't AS BAD as people say it is. If you're used to the better sonic games, obviously you're going to think less of the game, than someone that hasn't played sonic games much. People act like it's a plague or something, and it's really not THAT bad. I've seen a lot worse games.
While Sonic Classic Collection is a great port, I recommend the Smartphone port because it only cost $2.99, and you can play as Tails and Knuckles! And for some trivia for the Smartphone port, the only thing Sega had to do with it was publishing it. The Taxman (he made the 2011 re-release of Sonic CD) and Stealth (responsible for Knuckles in Sonic 1) made the Smartphone port together. Sad how the Sonic fanbase was able to make a more worthy port than Sega was.
The porting team was disallowed from using the original source code and instead was made to port this game using the Sonic Advance engine, which was never meant to handle the amount of sprites present in your average 16-bit Sonic game. Also, they rushed this game like Sonic '06.
Hey AllieRX87 I have Sonic Classic Collection on my DS. However there are not 100% ironed out compared to the Genesis. Cause there are odd glitches, graphical glitches, and framerate can get a little choppy. Did you encountered those "odd glitches" on the DS Version as well? BTW Good review, but I liked your older review better especially that "BULLSHIT" joke. But yeah they fucked up the GBA version really bad!! (I don't have the GBA version that you're reviewing.)
Even if you don't compare it to the original, it still has problems: lag, slowdown, countless glitches, and more. You have to understand. Sonic is meant to be fast. If that gimmick fails due to lots of other issues in the game, then there's a serious problem.
Sega was doing so bad with Sonic at this point they couldn't even handle porting the original game.
Mannnn so glad Awful games videos are still up! Memories.
Of course its slower, the gba doesnt have blast processing.
as we all know, sega does what nintendon't
The original Genesis, not Mega Drive slogan, was "Genesis does what Nintendon't"
A joke? The GBA has WAY more processing power than the Genesis.
The sad thing about Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is that much like Sonic '06, it was rushed into the market without properly testing and feels incomplete, but this time, it took Sega one month to make this port.
This game can crash just by going through a special stage? Sega really ripped people off with this garbage.
It's not the system's fault. It was the fact that Sega rushed this port.
The GBA has plenty of great 16-bit ports.
This actually makes Somari look like a masterpiece!
As awful as Somari was, at least it had a better frame-rate
How SEGA should fix this game:
Make themselves a difference engine and rework it.
In Anniversary mode, there are new levels and you can use the Spin Dash.
Make new music.
Any other ideas?
i have not seen any lag in this game, your gameboy must be half-bricked
even mariotehplumber fell through the wall in the special stage when he played this game.
except after he went through the wall he went to a goal.
his reaction was gold
You didn't realize it was the OLD PlayStation 3 logo on the cover? Generations has the new PS3 logo.
there is a sonic 1 port that came out in 2013 on the ipod touch
If sonic genesis is the worst sonic game on the game boy advance. I couldn’t even imagine what streets of rage would’ve look like
This game is so bad i TRIED to make a Gameplay video of this shitty game that WAS NEVER UPLOADED TWICE!!!
I remember playing sonic classic collection on the nintendo Ds. That was epic. This is just dire!
Did you record this with a Game Boy Player for the GameCube? If yes, isn't there an option to zoom in closer? Other than that a nice Anniversary Edition Review. I already liked your first review of this, but this one's even better.
If you want a Sonic game for the GBA, get one of the Sonic Advance games.
Preferably the first one, which is the best Sonic game since CD. The other two have atrocious level design.
5:44, holy shit! I didn't know it was that bad! Keep that footage, it is SPECIAL!
i remember i got this piece of fucking shit when i was 7, good thing i got a wii a week later and i got the virtual console port and ocarina of time

Oh my god, TH-cam just recommended this and I haven’t seen this video since it was newish, glad to see this dude still making videos
Worst anniversary ever for any character.
I never ran into these glitches, nor did I have and problems with the game. Maybe because I never played the original, but enjoyed it enough
Once you play the original, you'll see what this guy is talking about.
I loves this game for the SEGA Genesis; the first game system I ever had. This is a disgrace.
*loved
1:27 I like how they show the Labyrinth zone as the last picture. Good fucking luck seeing any god damn thing else because this fucking game... I just fucking snapped my god damn DS in half. THANKS SEGA FOR THE WORST SONIC GAME EVER!
This is a good update to your original review, although I still find the original to be funny as hell!

Am I the only one around here who can face the lag in sonic genesis?
Still better than Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric.
I got this on my phone, and it was like, 5 FPS and the music was really distorted.
I found the glitch that made Sonic jump while moving.
I played the anniversary on my chromebook guess what - it actually ran almost exactly like the original (like the sonic generations one)
Thanks, I never bought this game back when it was released on account of already owning the genesis copy, now I'm thankful I saved my money.
thankfully on his 20th birthday, Sonic had a good year with generations.
i think I know why this port sucks, don't u remember sonic advance where there aren't enemies everywhere, well this port was created with that SAME engine and the worst part they released another game with THE EXACT SAME NAME
your kinda like avgn, and i like it
Also, Live To Win" in the beginning, AWESOME song! Probably my favorite song to put in boss battle videos! Thank you for including the song because now I know it plus I just subscribed:D.
Yeah it's U.S. only.
They should remake the game and fix the gliches even better play as any cherecter
I recall in your 1000 subs special video that your remake review of this game would be open to friends only. But then again, that would decrease your views and subscriber gain, so I guess that move would be un-wise.
Funny thing is.... They even made a weird death animation for Sonic in the port where his actual death sprite changes to the drowning animation.

I love all your videos keep it up and what is the song playing when you are talking in the beginning pls ty
6:51 Sounds like a Christmas midi
If you found this bad, ,try sonic jam on the game.com, it becomes a dissaster putting the world fastest mascot on the worlds slowest console, haga lol.
Y does everyone hate on Sonic 1 GBA? I personally think it is SLIGHTLY better! Only because of the anniversary edition.
It's runs slower and is mostly unplayable what else do you need.
Ohh. For me that wasnt the case
Have you played the original?
Maybe you were on an emulator?
+Craftyawesome I've played it on the wii virtual console and on a emulator
"WARNING: Contains language"? Dang it, I'm not allowed to watch anything with language. Can you upload a clean version without any language? Thanks!
this was a awesome and hilarious review please do more reviews like this
Good news, he's bringing the series back! And with a newfound passion, too! :)
The footage seems to have been recorded from the gamecube
I say that game can never be bashed enough. It was so bad everyone thought the Sonic franchise was on life support at that point.
Hey Allie-RX at 8:58 what movie is this from when the 2 guys saying BULLSHIT! one black and one asian at the liquar store.
The Breaks
thanks you and the Tyshawn Zone used it.
Gameboy Advanced version was made at PAL speed as the system was multi region so is comparing it to the NTSC Genesis version really valid?
I missed these old reviews
I still do reviews, just not this particular series.
But with my channel's 10th Anniversary coming up, I've got some exciting announcements later this year. Stay tuned. ;)
Allie-RX
Awesome to hear it. :)
Me too I remember watching this review when it first came out and his bootleg games series are good too

You Are Going To Do Sonic Next Gen (aka) Sonic 2006:)
And it's actually been done before. A fan made a unbroken version of this game
it happan to me to but it never crash
Cursing makes me feel good when I play a really bad game. My videos are not for children and if people get offended by them, they can simply click the Big Red X on the top right of the window.

Compared to the lag in this version, the lag in Sonic 1 is virtually unnoticeable.
That's probably the reason why this version wasn't released in Europe.
Hmm.. here is a question.. If you defend a good game, which someone finds awful (for exemple) is it still wrong to defend it?
It's still up. Check the links in the description.
That won't happen until the end of the year.
It must've been minor. I did not notice any major slowdowns that hurt the game almost entirely.
Sonic Classic Collection had glitches, but they didn't completely cripple the games like here.
For Anniversary Mode, there was so much more they could have added. Why not give the option to have Tails following Sonic? Why not give you the ability to turn into Super Sonic after collecting the emeralds? Why not add the homing attack? Why not add the lightspeed dash?

just omg spring yard zone music ......
This was the first review I ever watched of yours way back in the day :D
I don't get it!? I have played that on my cousen game boy and it play just fine! Am I'm missing something!?
if youre talking about the megadrive version then the music is alot slower but the gameplay just a little bit.
About the GBA version there is no difference
Sonic 1 on Sonic Classic Collection may have a few framerate problems, but it's still a MILLION times better than this port.
I've heard what causes the slowdown is the music.
Blast processing > SNES
SMW, and ALTTP, both pretty damn good.
Is your next review on Sonic '06?
juice box! lmao xD good times, btw why did you remake this video AllieRX??
what better way to celebrate a milestone of sonic then to take his first game, emulate it horribly on hardware that isn't capable of doing a straight emulation, and making it worse then already released sonic titles on the system
Theres another bad port for this game on the Play station Network. OMG!!! It's worse then the X box 360 Castlevania: SOTN!!!
I don't think the Gameboy operates on video formats like NTSC or PAL. No reason for it to be slower.
I actually like the GBA spring yard zone music.
While Sonic Classic Collection is a great port, I recommend the Smartphone port because it only cost $2.99, and you can play as Tails and Knuckles! this was pretty good, but theres alot of nostalgia in the original :P
The porting team was disallowed from using the original source code and instead was made to port this game using the Sonic Advance engine, which was never meant to handle the amount of sprites present in your average 16-bit Sonic game. Also, they rushed this game like Sonic '06.
since they were disallowed from the original source code, the game was doomed from the start
True, but that defeats the purpose of playing Sonic on the go. You might as well play it on your Genesis or a compilation disc.
Hooray for not killing the Star Light Zone theme!
Hey AllieRX87 I have Sonic Classic Collection on my DS. However there are not 100% ironed out compared to the Genesis. You have to understand. Sonic is meant to be fast. If that gimmick fails due to lots of other issues in the game, then there's a serious problem.
@AllieRX87 I can't find the original Convoy No Nazo, just your commentary on it.
someone at sonic retro hacked the game to make it right, its funny that a single hacker managed to do what a whole company failed to do
