Why Your Quail Suddenly Stopped Laying Eggs Or Your Egg Production Slowed Down

  • This is a topic I have covered several times but I am getting a lot of questions about it recently so I thought I would address it again. If you live in the United States it is just that time of year. The first day of fall was just a few days ago and the birds tend to stop laying during the fall and winter months. There are a few things you can do though.

    If you live further north, I would discourage using a light in winter, unless the quail are inside a warm-ish structure. In an outside hutch, they need all their energy conserved to withstand the cold. Laying eggs depletes precious fat/energy stores, and you may lose birds as a result.

    Thank you for the timely video! My chickens have a light but we don’t have one for the quail. This explains the problem. Thanks!

    When you first mentioned the hot wire, I told hubby we should put one up. Now, I REALLY want to! LOL AND thank you. I put some young birds in the 4 I had left from the first hatch and the adults have completely stopped laying. I guess now is the perfect time since I have one more batch of chicks almost ready to go out there (trying to build up my flock, since the first hatch only had three females out of 11 birds).

    What a fantastic video, very informative and lots of useful tips. Regarding the lighting, I've seen stores sell small foldable solar panels with a built in power bank which has
    USB outlets that you can theoretically use for USB lights. Would still need some sort of timer to control when the light comes on but it sounds like a decent alternative for
    those looking for something similar. I'm sure there are plenty of other "do it yourself" alternatives as well. I love the whole idea of using solar panels for charging battery.

    I have one right now who broke his neck by startling in the brooder box and smacking himself on the heat lamp. He has healed enough to pick his head up again. I have another rooster who got his eye pecked out by an unwilling hen. He's still my best breeder; his name is now Blinky, and she went into the fridge.

    Thanks for the info, Chris. I noticed the light is over the closed in part their hutch; do you gave a hole cut in the top for the light to come inside, is the light mounted inside, or what?

    Hi Chris. Do you have any thoughts on putting up lights and having them keep laying vs resting as nature intended? Does it shorten their egg production life cycle or their actual life expectancy? Thank you.

    • @jecriggs
      @jecriggs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      short answer: yes, it definitively does shorten their life expectancy and egg production life cycle.

      I get 1 happy egg per day from every female. In another channel i watch "self sufficient me" he says to let the girls rest as its intended by nature. I mean i could understand extending the laying season... but to force them to lay in the offseason is in my opinion, is a bit rough... They wont lay until they are comfortable as Mr Slightly Redneck said, I had a cat issue.... that held my girls back for a while.... than i had winter, sorta gave up on eggs at that point.... soon as i had 12 hours sunlight ALL my girls started laying like crazy.... the birds are GIANT now at around 450g-500g and so are their eggs. My point is to maybe leave them for 1 season and you will have happy bigger birds and bigger eggs next season. Fertility will increase and you can have them laying for 2 seasons. You cant whip them into laying but its only the factories that leave the lights on them 24/7 making them lay all year round. Extend your season with a light if you feel thats "what you need" but believe me its not "what they need...." they just need time mate.

      👀.....don't take this the wrong way but, you don't see that big ass quail castle he's standing in front of that the quail are in? 🤔 It's the white structure with the metal mesh windows, latches and locks.
      Unless they make hawks with hands and thumbs now, feathers can't open doors lol.
      They're protected from hawks the same way we protect ourselves from predators, by being indoors 😉👌🏾

    Do quail stop laying after a big move? We were given 4 hens and a Roo. They had a giant drive and it was quite stressful. That was 5 days ago. Only 1 egg in that whole time.

    anyone else notice just after you quail lay an egg they do a particular high pitched call not sure how to explain it but I can tell one has laid if I'm within ear shot.

    • @jodyflores601
      @jodyflores601 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lindsay Norman Yep, I notice it and it's what I call an "egg call" telling everyone I just laid an egg. Kinda like a chicken does with a distinct cluck after laying. I absolutely love hearing it and my kids will even say "Mom, someone just laid an egg". :)

    Does it matter if you add light in the am or pm?

    • @stacytaffer5412
      @stacytaffer5412 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The research I found says to add the light in the am. It allows the natural daylight to fade out in the evening vs. a startling hard lights out event.

    • @chasmofsar2691
      @chasmofsar2691 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. It's the duration. A quail doesn't care how the light goes on or off.

      @lindsaynorman9323 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have 2 hens that are 1.5 yrs 2 yrs around jan2021 and they still lay almost every day or every other day.

    • @jecriggs
      @jecriggs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience, they will lay until they die of old age. Not as often as every day, but still quite regularly.
