i am a great fan of this art. From the sounds of the instruments over the presented visualizaiton up to the beautiful voices. Unfortunately i don't understand the language. I would love to have a german translation not only of the song but a summary the presented story itself. I mean there is a normal modern guy, a historian or alike. And at the end he faces his own ... end? or is he about to free himself from the tree on wich he hang himself by living his modern way of life?
Rúnatal is a song about reincarnation.
The nine nights hanging from the tree without bread nor drink are the nine months in the womb, nourished by the placenta (the tree) via the umbilical cord (the spear).
Before falling from there again (shrieking as he is reborn), he picks up the runes, i.e. he learns the secrets of his forebears, the knowledge of his previous lives.
Interestingly, Odin (= 'the mind', i.e. our own selves) seems to be already dead throughout most of the length of the video, as suggested by his interaction with 'weird' looking people only, maybe themselves spirits, such as the blonde girl (a Norn), the businessman, the beggar, the protesters, the collector...

Ok, so I think I got it. Odin is this professor guy. He's not too happy about his job as a professor waking up at 7 every morning to teach modern day college losers about anatomy. So he delves into Gaelic mythology to satiate his desire for life to be different. Only problem is, he's the only asshole on planet Earth bored enough to do so much research into Gaelic mythology that the Gaelic gods start reciprocating.
So he bumps into this chick in the hallway one day and he turns back and he's all like "you need something champ?" and this chick just stares back. And Odin's like, "is this a slight of hand trick? Are you trynna smash for an easy A or something? Cuz I'm not gonna lie you're like a 5 and my standards are higher." But this chick fazes out of existence for a split second. Odin gets hit with a solid "what the fuck did I just see?" but the chick walks away before he can muster any words.
So he goes onto lecture his class but before he can put up four words on the white board some psycho bitch casts a spell so she's the only person visible in the whole room. She faze-clans into a ghost thing like the last chick, stunning Odin, before she gets up to seduce him. She does the faze clan thing again before making a move on him. Now Odin realizes this chick's a cut above that last one, second faze clan snowbun is like a 7-8 on the Richter scale. Music swells as Odin and faze clan girl lock eyes, but Odin remembers his academic integrity codes and disengages, causing faze clan girl to faze away. Odin comes out of the mirage to see his class staring at him like a dumbass. Class ends and Odin realizes he's read this in a book somewhere, so he goes there to read that book.
On his way, Odin is accosted by an existence transcending student, an existence transcending beggar, three existence transcending Antifa members, and an existence transcending tourist-lookin ass with a total neo-nazi fade. So now Odin has been confronted by Gaelic mythological beings from all over Dinesh DeSouza's least favorite part of the political horseshoe. If you go to 2:25 you'll see the face I made when my ex-girlfriend pulled out a stun-baton after I took her home the night of Junior year prom.
So while doing his deep delve to figure out why Gaelic mythological beings have been fuckin with him all day, Odin is greeted by a wisp. Like anyone who's had the type of day he just had, Odin follows the wisp to a canal bank. The wisp splashes into the canal (with really good cgi for this level of production I have to say) and Odin contemplates whether or not he wants to ruin is sweet sweater vest by taking a swim. Too bad for Odin because faze clan chick emerges from the water like an alligator.
Any sane person would take the .45 off their hip and mag dump the tango that just broke concealment. But this is The Netherlands and the government there says no so Odin just kinda accepts his fate, Lucina would not be proud. However the faze clan chick stands up from the water and Odin realizes she's actually pretty attractive and there's no academic integrity guidelines this time so he just decides to see where the night takes him. Too bad for Odin because faze clan chick decides to take him to a different plane of existence.
So now Odin's going down the river Styx with faze clan chick 1 and 2 and that's really it I think the band was going for a Dr. Seuss thing here.
So Odin wakes up bewildered like any person would be who just received faze clan coochie and a one way ticket to the boonies. Odin notices ancient Gaelic Odin in a treeline not to far from the river's edge. Odin follows, eventually reaching a tree where ancient Gaelic Odin is being lynched by three faze clan girls. So now Odin is scared for his life and realizes he should have talked to that faze clan chick in the water a little before trying his luck with her. But now it's too late, Odin has already donated to her twitch stream, and he's got nowhere left to go so he decides to ask if they're still a thing. Middle faze clan girl gives his a patronizing kiss on his head for wearing his heart on his sleeve and walks away with her faze sisters. Odin looks up at ancient Odin, who looks back with a look that screams,
"2000+ years and we're still making bad choices with women, not pog."
Norse mythology, not Gaelic. I found it was more someone discovering what asatru means to them, but music videos are for multiple personal interpretation.
The women in black at the end are the three norns, representing past present and future. At the end he is hanging on the tree since in Norse myth Oðinn hung himself from the giant ash world tree yggdrasil, and speared himself, as a sacrifice so he could gain knowledge on the runes.

Hi Aaron, the three ladies are foremost a representation of the threefold female archetype found in many mythological traditions. Within this context, you might call them Norns. But to us (the band) it's a matter of interpretation and what speaks to you most!
