Bernie: The Podcast | Episode 4 - The Media Crisis

  • In episode, we look at the media. As we speak, mainstream media is increasingly controlled by a tiny handful of corporate media conglomerates-many of which are controlled by billionaires. And local journalism-the lifeblood of democracy-is an increasingly endangered species Along with The Nation journalist John Nichols, I discuss why this is and how we construct a healthy media environment not beholden to billionaires.

    Tribalistic communities in the US don't get outraged by violence done to "other" groups, because they either feel too far removed from it or feel like it's somehow deserved, even when the victims are innocent. People froth at the mouth over sports teams, and they're just moving a ball around a field... This mentality is so strange.

    The impact of mainstream media on the working class includes the subtle, insidious and very effective psychological message that we are inferior in some way and that the struggles we face are largely due to our own incompetencies. It plays right to the insecurities of the poor and effectively helps to not only to keep them down, but also to alter perceptions so that we start to believe that the ultra rich deserve what they have - as, in turn , do we. The impact of the media is a crucial factor in our world views. Thank you for covering this. Bernie, truly appreciate all of your work.

    The problem is that many drug companies advertise on tv especially during the news and oil companies have invested in media companies as part of a horizontal consolidation.
    As to local news,it is mostly owned by one corporation that decides what is interesting locally along with the periquisite drug commercials.

    Focus on one rural town, change it with your capabilities, and use it as the guiding light to what America could experience. That's what I would do if I were you Bernie. In a mildly complaining tone, you talk about people asking you what you're going to do about problems. What you don't realize is you DON'T have to be president to make a difference. You can make lives better, NOW! The fact that you're not implementing any of your ideas into any communities is largely a fact of why you're losing support. People who've preciously supported you, they question your legitimacy. It's not about media conglomerates, it's about your focus on speech instead of action! You can ask for support every hour of everyday, but if you're not showing us WHAT is happening then you lose the support. No one can afford to give you donations out of their small pockets when you talk about the media conglomerates holding you back! 8yrs ago we were excited for changes, and you proved you're an ideas man, but you won't get anything done unless voted president... that's the major reason why your previous supporters moved on... The majority of your political supports were working class Americans, and when they gave away their saved up money to see nothing result of it... they were disappointed... All your working class supporters ended up paying for the salaries of the people on your campaign, and at the end of the day it feels like nothing meaningful was accomplished... You pride yourself on 'not being like the other politicians', but you're functioning nearly identical to all politicians, only singing a different tune. In my short 24 years, I can say that Karma is real, in this world you get what you give. If you want the adoring support of most Americans then you need to start proving you'll make a difference even without being president. If you could do that, then you would've swept this election so easily.

    FFS, Bernie, you]'re doing the lord's work and all, but when you cite things like us spending twice as much on healthcare, but getting worse results, can you post some sources on this information? I'm not doubting you, but I want to see how these metrics were measured to more adequately base my vote to address the problem.

  • @baileescott401
    @baileescott401 หลายเดือนก่อน

    In a previous comment I've criticized your media presence for it lacks a youthful approach. I'm sad to say, the sentiment remains. I can tell changes have taken place. Your efforts are not meaningless, but they still fall short. This video feels like it's made for a waning demographic. People in 2016 would enjoy this content more than they do now.
    I'll put it bluntly, as any type of professional, if you're getting less than 1K views in the first hour, your media presence is dead. If you're not even breaking 1K views in an hour, that means the Algorithm has no value for your video whatsoever. You're accumulating wandering attention, but no one is excited enough to anticipate the next video...The demographic which you seem to be aiming to please no longer exists. I'm 24, and I can look past the outdate nature of your presentation, but I know the majority of my peers would see the same content as out of touch and fake. It is obvious to a lot of people that your ideas are important, but they way they're conveyed to the public is what holds you back. You really need to let someone in their 20's direct your media team, because youthful communication is the only way you'll effectively reach out to the main demographic of America. There's a waning number of people who still respond to your current 'flavor' of communication, to be a Bernie fan you have to be a well informed young person, or an extremely empathetic mother/father. Very informed young people barely exist, and the very empathetic mothers/fathers are dwindling amidst the national divide. You need to encourage people to fight for what's right, not just by saying the words, but by acting like someone who will create change no matter what happens.
    The legitimacy of your ideas should lie on whether you make the choices. If your ideas are valid, you need to fight for them in a way which inspires the rest of Americans to shout support! If you want my honest truth, it seems as if you're following status quo of being a progressive. But all your ideas rest on the fact of power. Do you realize you get that power you desire if you connect with the people of America? You shouldn't be held back by anything, other than how limited you feel in your position. You've been a very effective politician, so if you want that recognition to continue then you need to do serious work and actually change live for the better. If you're on our screens just talking about the same stuff you've already said, then you'll quickly become another boring politician.
    I was too young to vote when you were running, but I would've voted for you in the past. In 2024 I have no clue if you can achieve anything anymore, it's beginning to feel like the dull process of an unimaginative politician. Repeating the same ideas for nearly a decade while complaining nothing can be done.... You have the right ideas, now you need the right attitude, because a single politician can change the lives of all Americans if they're equipped for the task. You don't need to be president to change the world. I'm a minimum wage worker and I make my immediate surroundings more positive everyday. I have power over very little outcomes, but in all my choices I try to choose the greater good for all. I'll end this somewhat serious comment on a slightly comedic note... If a well intentioned minimum wage employee was given the monetary possibilities a politician has, they could make noticeable changes in months! Not even a full term length! lol. If I even had a thousand dollars to spend on my community, I could noticeably improve it! So when politicians say the same things over and over again while providing no proof of progress, the average person starts to see them like they're just a crazy person attempting to make money by lying to us. The comedic part is that just a miniscule fraction of some projects budget's could meaningfully change American's lives. Yet money is spent on random people's salaries and paying the bills while making nothing change. We can see obvious avenues of change, and you can implement them. Literally you could personally invest into communities, all politicians have the means to do it, but they don't.

    If you want to be a provocative inefficient politician then keep doing what you're doing. You said that you'll give the answer you want instead of actually answering the question... do you realize that's one of the most hated thing about politicians??? Ya'll just say what you believe you should say, completely disregarding the person asking the question. It might've made ya'll look good in the 1950's, but now the public has caught on and it looks like you're a liar. Giving a tangent explanation about an unrelated topic is about the most annoying thing that politicians do. Yet you mentioned that's largely part of your job... Sad
