Loved how they looked back in the day. Used to race against them at Jackson Hobbies Track in NJ. But we were "RC-10 snobs" at the time and used to mock the tamiyas for their lack of suspension travel and loud gearboxes. A few years later, the "Ultima snobs" mocked us for the same reasons, and then the "JRX-2 snobs" mocked all of us! LOL! Miss those days of rivalries!
My buddies & myself built the real full size of this buggy; 2 wheel drive w/Volkswagen engines. Put sand paddle tires on the back & similar tires in the front. Then headed to Pismo Beach, CA for the weekend. I was 24 & married then, 1980. Brings back a lot of memories.
The original was my first hobby grade rc. When I finally saved up enough for a grasshopper my dad told me he had a friend selling a used Wild One, RC10 & Mugen Bulldog 2. I bought the Wild One (with a little help) and my dad ended up getting the other 2. Awesome memories, great car! I didn't realize it was popular enough for a re release. This one has an interesting color scheme. I like the dogbone upgrade over the hex shafts.
This makes me want to bring my original out of storage, I did get one back in 1985, ran the dog out of it at the local track. The look of a real buggy was the selling point. Great video.
Great review! I’ve returned to RC after over 30 years now that my son is old enough to appreciate it. I’ve always loved Tamiya’s attention to detail and this Wild One tops my list of vintage buys! The realistic look of it is awesome!
I bought a KingCab used about two years after they came out from a local hobby store I still have it and run it from time to time. I also have the original RC10T that is now brushless. Gotta love the tub chassis from the 80's.
Oh wow, I used to try to win at that booth in seaside whenever we went there ! And I remember wanting the Scorpion if I had won. Thanks for the memories
Just got one Christmas and I can’t wait to build it. Ordering full bearing kit before the build and I will be running it in my big grassy yard. A+ on Tamiya rere this buggy
I owned a "Wild One" a looooong time ago when I myself still was a wild one 😉 It was great fun but it had its weak spots especially in the suspension just because it was made more "realistic". In the less realistic ones the suspension can be beefed up without looking at cabin size fuel tank etc
Awesome. I never heard of the Wild One but now I am interested. I had a Hornet and loved it. This looks like a great upgrade. Tamiya RC cars just have so much character. Thanks for sharing.
I had a hotshot and my best friend had a Wild one. On pavement this thing would smoke me 10/10 times, but off road was the opposite. Those Wild Ones were so freaking fast.
Just ordered one to add to my collection. I wanted one when I was a kid but got a grasshopper instead. Will be getting a grasshopper soon both will be shelf queens with a little use.
I had the re-release fast attack vehicle years ago and I absolutely loved it! Even with the pogo stick suspension it handled really well and was so much fun to watch and admire driving around. It was also suprising reliable and durable concidering it's a vintage design. My only hope is that I can get another one of these buggies and enjoy it like I used to. Thank you for reviewing this one
As I just wrote above to the OP and a reply to another poster too, that, before I had a Sandscorcher 1979/80, two of my mate's had a Lamborghini Cheetah and the Fast Attack Vehicle. I always felt that they were lots of fun and drove well too - despite being basic. I nearly bought a mint and boxed original a year or two back - I would have wanted to build it and use it and being mint and boxed, I kinda didn't have the heart to. The Sandscorchers could be a handful on tarmac. I modified the front suspension (it could also have the original retro fitted too - I liked it as it was almost scale but didn't handle great back then). I've all the parts to rebuild that car - I must get around to it, I've also got the original box too, buried in the loft too. Sadly I sold my Wild One - I loved that car.
I had the Hornet, bought the black upgraded motor. They were so fun in the 80's. We thought they were so fast back then. Any basic traxxas today will blow them away.
😁👍Very nice video, Mine just recently came in on pre order, I agree with you this vintage buggy along with the fast attack handle and drive really well loads of fun great buggies! O and you just got to love those classic style knobby tires they don't make them like that no more!
Hi Greg, awesome video on the Blockhead Wild 😜 One, I’m glad you took on a soil track, i love rc’s running on dirt and soil, just what it was meant for, it looks amazing belting up and down the track. And it’s not too shabby going over the jumps, sweeeeeeeeet. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧
Awesome video! Man I used to love these RC cars! With all the FAA rules for drones, this is the best alternative! May have to return to this hobby real soon! Thanks for sharing!
Love this chanel and the wild one. The quality of the running video was not up to your typical videos would really like to see my 1st rc car get another video. Again I love your chanel.
About 30 years ago I bought a Tamyia Frog off an ex friend. Fun machine except the gearbox was very troublesome. Now I have a vintage nitro 2wd Traxxas Stampede still running great on the original engine.
We need to hear more about winning a Turbo Scorpion at the boardwalk! Actually, I think it would be pretty awesome just to hear more RC stories from the 80s and 90's.
Back in the day (for me 1979 - 1988/89), us greybeards, started off with Sandscorchers and Rough Riders (some lucky lads had the earlier Tamiya cars such as the Lamborghini Cheatah) etc. Then we moved onto Wild One's, Foxes etc. Lots of fun and early on we chewed up steering servos for fun in the Sandscorchers, then servo savers came along, as did replacement uprated drive shafts and gears (for various third generation Tamiya off road cars) etc making these cars nigh on perfect near scale cars. Then the Fox and various Mardave cars came out and went up a notch or two in terms of handling and performance, and by that time there was four wheel drive too. Happier times in many ways😊👍
man, i miss these building kits ! ... why don`t they sell it a bit cheaper but for self assembly ! why not make this with good quality modern stuff ? not just these old plasticy models
Back in the 80s this was the first RC I ever bought! Went to a club to race later and started breaking all the plastic parts! Oh yes, and then there's that understeer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is exactly the type of buggy that Tamiya does best. The only trouble is, they haven't repeated the success of the 80's and 90's buggies in recent times and are simply relying on re-releases. Here's an idea, why don't Tamiya get a licensing deal in place with someone like Funco Motorsports or even one of the Extreme-E teams and design a modern scale realistic sand rail or Dakar style buggy for new generations of fans to appreciate?
Hi there, this version and the WildOne standard version was on my list, wish I’d got one now. Awesome looking Tamiya with classic old school driving system, just great. This Blockhead version looks amazing. Nice review. As always, take care, keep well and all the best to you and the family. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. 😉😊😉
Great video as usual, Greg! Wanted one of these bad so I scoured the net. Nothing in stock. Finally found one available Wednesday morning on eBay from a very reputable RC retailer. Ordered it, then ordered some accessories and bearings from Amazon to go with it. Two hours later, got an email saying they actually didn't have it in stock. Grrrrrr! Oh well, ordered one from my local hobby shop. Just have to wait for it I guess.
@@isaiahfurrow7414 Thanks! Yeah, I saw that yesterday or so. I already have a Blockhead on order from my LHS. I'm tempted to get both but hard to justify at this point.
My favourite.buggy of all time and still have my original..got 4 more to build, a re.re, a Blockhead and two custom FAV's in progress. Try adding a little bit of weight to the front 😉
I always loved the look of these. Hey Gregg, having lived in Toms River N.J. all my life and grew up working on the Sea side Ht.s boardwalk as a kid in the 90s and I never won a R.C. car. That's a cool story, even though you chose the Kyosho. lol Thanks🙂
Thats awesome they are coming out with new gt kits as well this time with esc’s and servos still. Red a remote tho I miss my Blackfoot watching this and cloggbuster
It can be carbon fiber, milled T6, molded graphite. Nothing will beat the feeling of being 12 again building and driving a Tamiya car. The wonders of the 80's.......... before everything is about instant gratification and RTR.
I'd really love some Tamiya... and my son wants to get a TT drift car, so we will likely start with a TT or 2... but I can't help think they have a HUGE opening to not just re-release the old kits, but to do minor updates to make them better but still keep the style and character of the old nostalgic models.... or release a new, modern Mk2 of some of them... use the names, and style/livery, and release a modern kit 2wd monster truck with beetle or willy or pumpkin or lunchbox.... a more modern buggy with grasshopper of fighter livery and namesake... etc... Hard to understand why there isn't a lot of NEW innovation aside from mainly the touring cars .... there's soooo much room to use their heritage to add another new generation of kids having a Tamita kit be their intro to the hobby... but they just recycle the old stuff without even updating them, let alone offer much as far as new, more modern kits.... there's no reason they aren't capable of making a few nice modernized kits... I keep KINDA wanting to buy some Tamiyas, but never pull the trigger, just like I never never in the past. I think are modern kit with better performance and more modern suspension would really sell. Tempted to buy a Neo Fighter... if it came with oil shocks and bearings I likely would...definitely of it had a bit more modern plastics in some places, or an updated gearbox like Kyosho ReRe kits. ....even if it meant 200$ or even a bit more for the kit. Rant over, on to look at other kits, and keep only kinda wanting something Tamiya....
Hey RC Driver! That is a Great buggy I picked a Hornet kit to build that's what it had started out with back in the day with the two stick control transmitter that was a classic and so much fun and I used with my planes Futaba was the brand these are so much Fun driving Now I get it!🤔😉👍📹💯🎅 Great review and video Merry Christmas!
Just put together my own Wild One and ran it. I feel like the front wheels have a bit of wobble to them because (1) they're a bit tall and (2) the front suspension has a bit of side play. I had already shimmed up the suspension arm with washers while putting it together.
Great video, stunning little car - shame that there are still a few short falls. Tamiya are very good when they're very, very good, but just sometimes they're horrid. It'll be interesting to see how the driveshafts and metal gears hold up. Having said that, they are a hoot to drive! I love that they oversteer with that front wheel/tyre combo, they're so much fun with 2WD too. I loved mine, back in the day, circa 1984/85. I tweaked the car; bearing races throughout, built it carefully, up rated drive shafts and up rated gears (back in the day stock drive shafts and gears wore and broke very quickly), I ran-it-in etc etc. It flew and it looked scale. I painted the driver wearing the same metallic paint scheme helmet etc as my own motorcycle helmet. Wish I'd never sold it now. Almost too fast for an old greybeard like me these days, rock crawlers are a lot more sedate😄😄
I have a 2014 re-re Kyosho Scorpion. All the shiny parts that are plastic on the Wild One are aluminum on the Scorpion. I know they are different, but money to money you get a lot more with the Scorpion
Yes, it's a cool buggy, but the battery compartment can't hold a standard 2-Cell LIPO battery. Many Tamiya RCs have the same problem, and it needs to be addressed!
I absolutely love these rereleases. They bring back the cool in RC just like classic muscle cars from the 60’s do. Thanks!
Now this is an example of when a manufacturer gets the styling exactly right!

I raced a boomerang back in the day. I took out the rear axles to qualify as 2wd. And did very well. It was fun times for a 16 year old
I really want one of these. I love the Tamiya vintage re-release buggies. Thanks for the great review.
Nice Wild One! I also like your Jeep Gladiator peeking in the background.
I have 2 of the OG Wild Ones, a runner and one still as a kit. Love it!!!
I had a Wild One back in the mid-80's ...... time to get a new one !!!!!!!!
