Hahaha you make it sound like the end of the world. Just want to say don't worry because everyone is figuring out their own path, other people's paths are just for reference. There are still plenty of people who enjoy this industry, like my friends and there are still amazing architects in the world, so don't think this path is just done for now!
I did have an amazing uni time, and I didn't have a channel like mine for reference when I applied to architecture school, so just use the videos as inspiration, not as gospel or something to reply on fully, and try to discover and research your own path! 🌱

12:31 "Now is better than tomorrow, dude." 😅😂
If you come from a family with a lot of connections, you have family members who are in the construction industry who you have a good relationship with that they can take you onboard, or maybe you are just rich, so you have been able to go all these places hobnob with people in the construction industry, then go for it absolutely. Don't even think about it. But if you are some poor kid just going through the process groping in the dark thinking you may be the person who helps your family out of poverty because you are smart, and you have been told your entire life that you are smart, again, "Now is better than tomorrow," because that program is going to be tough financially and on your social life, and getting the payoff you think you deserve after the program is not very likely.
But, honestly, the results we get in anything in life depends on the totality of the attributes that make us who we are from when we were kids: how you get raised, what sort of activities you took part in from when you were a kid, all of it. Maybe you have the special combination of attributes that are unique to you that could potentially make you succeed in architecture. But what's important is you have the information, and you can make a more informed decision than you would have otherwise. Cheers and best wishes.

as an Architect for years now... if it's your passion, go for it. BUT I have a lot of batchmates and Arch Friends who also quit this field, it's fulfilling whenever you see your projects but the process and the effort to go through everything is not for everyone. I've been to both Design, Construction and even Project Management, and tbh until this point I had my ups and downs but it's up to you if salary and work-life balance doesn't matter (but ofcourse it does), Architecture school is WAY DIFFERENT compared to real life work... there's a lot to be sacrificed in this field. It's never too late to shift. (Sorry if it's a bit negative)

What you are feeling and going through is actually the fact that schools fail to really prepare us for the work life! At uni everything is beautiful and ideal but when you start working it is boring, cutthroat and backstabbing. I had graduated as a doctor and worked for some time as such. But the extreme competitive environment, plus the long shifts and miserable pay left me feeling drained. Now I help my family in the catering business and I feel much happier. So I feel you girl. keep following your heart as YOLO!

    • @glorykuk
      @glorykuk  ปีที่แล้ว +2

HAHAHAHA definitely YOLO Doreen! I am so glad that this resonated with you, and for sure school never prepared any of us for this, which is why I do believe education needs some type of reforming. Super interesting to hear your story, so sorry you went through that but I am so glad you find fulfilment in doing business with your family! Love it 💕💪

Worth noting for anyone who is in architecture or planning to get into it - one of the most valuable pieces of advice I was given just before finishing my part 1 - choose the practices by the experience you want to get and stop chasing big names. Smaller practices will give you more hands-on experiences and more responsibility and allow you to see the nitty-gritty of what it is like to run a project - from start to finish. While bigger practices will often put you in a monotonous position without experiencing the full spectrum of what it is truly like to be an architect. Good luck!

Firstly, can I just say that CONGRATULATIONS on following your heart & allowing it to lead you to a life of your dreams. I’m so SO incredibly proud of you, it takes massive courage to leave the safety net of a financially secure lifestyle & floating into uncharted waters, but none of us become what want to be by staying in an occupation that serves the exact opposite of that.
Even though our circumstances are different, I could still genuinely see eye to eye with each & every reason that drove you towards outgrowing the space you were in. I truly feel that for many creatives who wants to lead a life that is authentic to their values & inner spirit, doing most 9-5 feel absolutely miserable (obviously, this doesn’t go for everyone, what is an elixir for one is posing for another, but it’s something that I strongly feel from the depth of my heart & mind)
Also, starting an enterprise of my own one day has also always been a childhood dream of mine (and so many other people watching this video) so I’m truly so ECSTATIC to see how that will manifest for all of us in the very near future! Your videos may have been centred around architecture, but the core message was always to pursue people to go after their dreams & this is exactly what you are doing right now! You have not disappointed anybody, but in fact empowered so many who may never get the courage to take that first step away from roles that break them down.
Glory, you should feel phenomenally proud of yourself, because you owed to it to your heart & spirit to follow your true calling. I, along with all your followers, are here to cheer you on always!
The shell may have changed, as it should when we grow in life, but the uplifting & inspiring essence of this channel still remains at its heart & that is exactly why we’re all here.
Landing in your inbox soon, but absolutely SO EXCITED FOR YOU IN THE MEANWHILE♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

ive been doing this for 20 years, and have worked for 4 different firms now. im licensed and let me just say shes not wrong. Architecture is CRUSHING. you get in tons of debt, you have to take years to complete your internship and get licensed on top of the years in college, and then you take years to "work up the corporate ladder" and it comes at the cost of having to focus on your personal life and starting a family or being married to the profession. a LOT of the higher ups are miserable, divorced, stressed, unhealthy. im not trying to scare anyone but im trying to be honest and realistic about what you are getting into. add to that that this job is like 90% sitting at a computer all day, being pigeon holed, or not taken seriously when you are young, or when your middle aged your now invisible and still not taken seriously. a lot of your success in this profession is based on who you know and being extroverted, it can be very competative. and to top all that off you dont make a lot. i say all that to say this: i love design, i love 3d modeling and rendering and the whole process of building and constructing a building, HOWEVER if i knew what i know now after 20 years i wouldnt have gone this route. ive burnt out on two different occasions and its come at the cost of my personal life. and the truth is that in a firm of 50, maybe 5 get to design....and they are usually the ones that are there the longest. that is the reality of the field and that school does a very poor job of preparing you for. id rather come across overly critical than overly postive because you already get that pie in the sky out look from college and not enough honesty about what this profession is like for MOST people. of course there are always exceptions to the rules but ....they are exceptions.

I totally agree with the crushing part. I did landscape architecture for 1 year and the stress of keeping up with unrealistic deadlines and learning all the the technicalities of using software combined with following strict policies and city requirements was crushing me. There was no room for interpersonal relationship as everyone was super busy and stressed, It was hard enough finding someone to help the new guy (me) while being patient at it. It was very isolating. I worked at 2 offices and both would be extremely quiet. It just felt like it was sucking the life out of me.

  • @JohnMatthew45
    @JohnMatthew45 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you for your transparency! I agree in so many levels, thought provoking. I’m also a part 1 now in 10 months working in practice. A completely agree that architecture takes on a much different feel compare to university. I really enjoyed design, art and creating something. But actually architecture as a profession now I realise is 80% coordination and 100% screen time. I’ve always knew I never wanted an office job, sitting in desk all day and doing something repetitive. But thankfully the mid-size practice Im in is very social - I think if it weren’t for this human connection I would have burned out quickly. I can also relate with you how we know its a long duration to qualify and it’s possible, but it may not worth everything we hoped it to be. I still enjoy the technical side of architecture. But come to realise it, I really don’t like the lifestyle of busyness. Thank you Glory for this. I’ll definitely ones who’ll stick around and watch your journey. :)

I just wanted to let you know that I truly admire your courage, strength, and determination to follow your purpose. To be honest, when I first started watching this video, I was a bit skeptical because you mentioned that you quit architecture. However, as I continued to listen, I realized that I feel the same way as you do in every category you mentioned, including the corporate ladder ingrained in the architecture field. This realization initially surprised me because when I was growing up, I always believed that architecture was about freedom, flexibility, and true expressionism.
Now, I see this as an opportunity. The skills we acquire and refine in architecture school are incredibly valuable and can be applied to a variety of creative industries. It is possible to innovate and break new ground with these skills, challenging traditional structures and inspiring others to do the same.

  • @cellvecc

I was working in an office, where I also didn't feel good about what I was doing or who I was doing it for. I see much more of a social side of architecture as a rewarding side, helping people to live with dignity. And I was only doing projects for people who have always lived well. With this dissatisfaction, I'm transitioning between areas, and I'm really sorry to change, but I have nothing to think about doing beyond that.

Thank you for this video, its just helped me so SO MUCH. My story (may be it would help someone): i really loved architecture and wanted to connect the rest of my life with it, i was one of the best students in my group. But at the 2nd grade of uni i understood what it really is to work as an architect (and what architects REALLY do). I believed in myself so much and i knew that if i would work hard i will be successfull. But i understood that i do not want this type of life for me (9 to 5 and salary for the next 20 or more years behind the screen). I was SO UPSET. It felt so bad, because everyone around me was SURE that i graduate from arch university. I felt weak, like i give up on this goal. At the same time i always wanted to create a business too, to develop as a freelance graphic designer (what i do now) and i didn't allow myself to quit architecture for these areas. It felt like i must achive my 16 years old goal, despite the fact that it is no longer relevant for me. Now i am at the end of the 2nd year, and i just understand that i have to leave architecture and continue to develop as a freelancer, and ITS OKAY. I feel relief, thank you!

I could not belive you articulated my tought so well regarding job culture. I am in the same situation in the last 4 years, but did not had the courage to make a change. This is bad cause a dissatisfing working career brings other problems such as regrets and not been able to go forward in life in general. I hate to sell my time for money, time is the only thing that is limited and I will never have back. I hate as well to come at the office at 9 and leave at 18 without having real social contacts whatsoever, this life is making me hopeless and resentful. I need to find your courage.

Are you still making videos on this topic? I recently quit my job in landscape architecture. I did it for a full year and I don't think I could have kept going. I felt like it was eating away at my soul. There was no room for interpersonal relationships because of demands and pressure from billing hours. And there were so many technicalities and policies that that I felt I was drowning in and that chocked out all creativity. I just knew that I did not want to spend my whole life behind CAD in a cubicle, alone, so quiet and miserably stressed out.

  • @beyiTV

That was unexpected! Firstly thank you for raising a lot of useful points of reflection that I will need to encounter if I go down this path.
Yeah I think you're definitely the type of person who could excel as an entrepreneur, there are so many new ways of working and earning outside of the 9-5(6 for arch). Also having that intuition and foresight is a great skill to have; don't take that for granted. Personally, I just run everything into the ground, even if it's not working as I get totally immersed.
But I have mixed feelings as well. I think it's a mistake to say it's easy and straightforward, particularly as you've not got through the 7 years and all the unexpected things that could arise in that time. Secondly, I think be careful how much trust you put in these business gurus. Personally I only trust the Dhamma and my own intuition/instinct and that grounds me.
Also think about the impact of Real Estate on wider society eg inequality, homelessness, monopolisation etc and your role in wider society because everything you do will have a wider impact outside the industry as well. Sometimes these business gurus make it seem that is not the case or gloss over this fact.
Nonetheless I'm interested to see your journey and growth, even if we may not approach it in similar ways, as exposure to different perspectives in the public sphere is vital. All the best🤞 Also the way you put videos together is great.

You made a wise choice, going forward architecture isn't rewarding enough financially or spiritually and the point you made about creativity. 70% of architecture work is admin. Printing drawings etc.
I have subbed and will be following your journey. Best wishes on your future endeavours but recognising what you like and not is great intuition to have.
If you ask me architecture is broken requires hard work alot of sacrifice and doesn't give enough money to one day quit early and enjoy your life until of course you reach the pension.
Definitely no adventure in it for me too.

95% arch firms will give you :
1-mediocre salary (You can afford to buy a home is less likely to start a family
    2- ( some firms doesn’t provide benefits)
3-They want you to do free overtime (if you don’t , they will look at you as a mediocre ( because you have standards) “ We will buy you pizza but stay all night slave “😂
4- you are not the designer = this means is not your project , your creation= zero satisfaction.
Imagine spending around 5 to 10 years like this .
If u get the licenses that doesn’t mean you will succeed. If you are ok with all I have mentions , is ok to study arch.

WOW... you accurately identified the problems of architectural practice but your solution is to go into real estate??? So all the things that you aspired to and believed in during your studies got hampered by profit driven market dynamics and the way out is to strip of everything architecture related and just focus on this exact part that caused the problems you are telling about...
