  • Our latest episode on Pure Fix TV is all about the infamous skid-stop. The skid-stop is a stopping technique that many fixed gear riders employ to help them more briskly come to a stop. In this episode, we'll teach you different techniques on how to best use this stopping method, how it helps, and how to stay safe, while doing it. Enjoy!

you should not encourage people to ride brakeless. Yea its 'cool' or whatever but you dont have to use the brake if you dont want to, and if you are in an emergency situation you will be glad you have a brake. Don't listen to this chick, true "G's" ride a brake so they don't hurt anyone or themselves.

Zolo X how much of this video was about stopping on velodromes, chief? I only ask because you're replying to a 6 year old comment and I don't remember. If it's zero percent, like I expect, then your comment is as relevant as it is timely. I'm sure a big-brained fellow such as yourself is fully aware that you use the bank to brake on a velodrome, and you don't really have banks on the road that are reliable enough to use as brakes. Hence recommending to fit an actual brake to ride fixed gear on the road 👍🙄

If you live in a manageably flat area, then fixies make sense. They bleed less energy, so you move faster than with a derailleur at the same gear. And the lack of a rear derailleur lowers some maintenance costs. It's just another tool appropriate for a set of environments.

I love my fixie, and prefer to ride without using the brake, but I'm never taking the brake off if I'm going to be riding on the road. No matter how skilled you are, unexpected things happen. For example, throwing or breaking your chain. I've never thrown the chain on a fixie, but I have broken one on a geared bike. If you want to ride without brakes, that's your prerogative, just don't take out a pedestrian or another cyclist when you can't make an emergency stop fast enough.

For tgose that wonder, yeah there are many ways to use your foot as a brake:
always have the saddle if you use it low enough so you can brake by stomping/pressing both feet on the ground and let friction do its work. - Yes, if you hillbomb you night need new shoes next week.
You can use the inner arc of one of your feet if you have no stooping profile and use the harder outer line of your soles, by pressing it gently from the side to the mantle. - Yes, you should try to let your leg be pulled to a degree into the profile.
Place the foot you have more control over for the first times flat onto the mantle of the front tyre and use your foot as a block between your tyre and the frame. Yes - it is dangerous, you have to learn it over and over. It can hurt and injure you badly. Does it stop you in an emergency? If you are already riding staying and are used to martial arts/sidekicks you sgould get a feel for it soon.
There are more. Let's leave it at that. Point is anyone can and should learn to control any vehicle driven, especially in an emergency, which is not meaning to prevent yourself from getting hurt - if you manage that, fine - but to not be a danger to others.

I'm a courier and ride a fixed gear with both a back and a front brake. I like riding fixed because the fact that the crank and wheel are locked in rotation helps my bad knee (from Kung Fu, not cycling). Also, the extra inertia helps with maintaining cadence while sprinting. my job mainly consists of 2-3 mile bursts back and forth. And also it helps to "feel" the road and i find myself driving more like a car than a biker. Also, my brakes are located on the flats of my bullhorns, so sometimes when i'm riding on the horns, i straight up skid/ backpedal, but it helps to be able to skid then drop back on the brakes for a dead stop if i have to. As a courier, i find myself in tight spaces quite a bit and having brakes just adds extra maneuverability. I've seen messengers and couriers fly around brakeless/ one brake and then get smacked up the block for running a red. That split second of stoppage can mean life or death. I'd rather be alive than cool. Before you guys bitch about the back brake, here's my logic with having it:
    1. It obviously allows me to slow down without back pedaling which, once again, saves my knees.
    2. There have been times where i've needed all 3 brakes for a super dead stop. However, if i wanted to, i can just as easily back pedal to slow down.
    3. I live in Denver, Co. The metro is mostly flat, but there are a LOT of hills, and when you're fatigued from biking all day, and you're flying down a hill, sometimes you just wanna take your feet off the pedals and straight up just let gravity do the work and use the hand brakes to stop.

I just wanted to say if you build your Pure Fix at home that is awesome. However if you are going to try riding fixed at anytime in the future you need to get the cog and lockring tightened. I work at a bike shop and if this is not done, the cog and lockring could come unthreaded while trying to do the skid or skip stop, even the back pressure method could cause this to happen. The threads could get damaged badly it is not covered under warranty and you could crash and get super messed up. The more you know.

Who wants to rely on a "skip stop" when riding in a city? There is no way that is as effective as a brake.
You have pedestrians, traffic signals, cars. Who's going to start hopping their back tire when one of those obstacles pops in front of you? "Pardon me, folks... I just need to start hopping on my back tire. Please be patient!"

I hate it that peops like you don't get that "they" are in most cases exactly knowing what Fixies are for and surely have more control over it than 90% of the Fixie-riders, sadly the latter do not get "that".
Most Fixie-riders, because that is what they do, they sit on a bunch of metal and ride it, are directly comparable to Scooter-Kids.
It is fun to ride a Scooter. It is fun to ride a fixie and for a short tine it is a challenge to learn it but a person that wants to be taken serious has to do sone more - NOT going ego and ignore the rest of the world that you are directly affecting, because you insert something very dangerous (with you on it) into an already non-existent eco-system that barely survives due to subventions from cities and communes that basically allow you to actually gain, even earn from driving your own rustbucket you call car.
If you do any of that i do not know - but if you are are a part of "them" you surely know what i described.

Yeah. Flip flop hub is the best way to go. Front brake. Good to go. Have fun.
