    Using and fresnel lens and a swivel frame I and able to instantly catch wood on fire, melt rock, dirt and metal. Also shown here is a focus tube. While not completely needed, it is hard to guess the positioning when using something this large. Commonly seen, using a small magnifying glass, You get a V-shape curve of light if off angle to the sun instead of a spot which spreads the heat over a larger area. With a large fresnel lens you can already see that a lot of light is scattered around the main spot. So by using this it makes it quick to set up and reduces the light scatter as much a possible.

    Wonderful, guy! Just please be careful not to breathe the fumes from all those things. There are minerals that can be deadly in your blood stream. A lot of ceramic artists have learned the hard way that many of the glazes used to make beautiful finishes have HEAVY METALS. The wood of some trees has toxic chemicals, that can poison you if you breath the dust generated as you saw or sand to get those fine surfaces. Thanks for Sharing your experiments.

  • @dumbcat

    I wonder what happens if you put a series of Fresnel lenses in a daisy chain. Would that increase output? I'm thinking about carving a small home out of a very large rock on my property. If I could just melt the rock that would be pretty helpful.

    • @GrowingAnswers
      @GrowingAnswers  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I know it's a joke, you cannot create more power my several. It would actually decrease the heat. The focal point would not change and then light would have to pass through more, decreasing the light. It would be similar if you had a hazy day compared to a sunny day.

    • @dumbcat
      @dumbcat 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      OrionA51 I actually was not joking about carving a home out of rock. It's called Rock-cut architecture and I'm researching different ways to go about it. Thanks for the info though. It dawned on me that I might be able to melt a good sized portion of rock using several Fresnel lenses, not in a daisy chain but all aimed at the same spot and just start scooping the melting rock away with a small shovel little by little. Once inside the rock where there is no sunlight I guess a person could use mirrors to bring a hot beams inside and aim them wherever you want. It sounds crazy but the sun can be very intense where I live and when I saw that video of the guy melting the steel paddle lock I thought... hmm.

    • @GrowingAnswers
      @GrowingAnswers  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You cannot aim a fresnel lens. You'd have to you a mirror. Good luck doing that

    • @SuperibyP
      @SuperibyP 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you set up the lenses in a way that it would cover a huge surface area, and "aimed" using mirrors to a single point, you could potentially get some extreme heat.

    • @dumbcat
      @dumbcat 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I said 'daisy' chain, but I think what I meant to say was, just several mirrors aimed at the same spot to increase power. Of course to carve out the interior of a space you would need to go around corners as well, requiring some kind of chain of mirrors.

  • @SDPickups

    • @JJ-vf4id
      @JJ-vf4id 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you applied force with oxygen or compressed air at the spot that is melting it would fuel the burning process and clear the melted material exposing the next later to melt away. This is how cutting torches work.

    The tight fitting blocks are created, soft blob by soft blob (either wholly soft, less likely, or partially softened, a few inches in from their surface, after an unknown ancient softening material is applied), continuously getting shaped as they're placed in the structure until it is filled in completely. Timing is important in the construction so that blocks don't stick to each other and that when more material is added to an incomplete block or "stone" that it blends into it seamlessly (those two things are opposite each other!). In other words a shaper stands there forming the block as more soft "rock" (ancient lost recipe of a slow-working softening agent for natural rocks) is added until it's the right shape and size. Then let to cool or set or dry or harden, slowly over days or weeks, until the next block can be placed and shaped without it sticking to adjacent blocks. it's an easy yet slow and methodical process. Exactly the same as what sidewalk makers in a city do. I think the consistency would be like Taffy. Once a new adjoining block on the top of a wall has hardened, the shape'r persons prep the next spot, likely a type of molding process. Then the "plastic" "rock" is delivered in manageable sized chunks there to be added. It MELDS with the previous chunk SEAMLESSLY or! it's treated as a NEW block and waits for the surrounding finished blocks to set first. The "shaper" decides when there the block is finished and when the next block is started.
    1. this solves the problem of having to transport large blocks down and up valleys all at once. There are variations on this theme depending on where in the world its done, but basically material rock is cut out of a quarry and then cut into manageable sizes for transport.
    2. this rock material is then softened and placed on the wall where the shape'rs take over. This softness or plasticity is how you get the "You can't fit a razor,paper,hair,knife, or Light, between the blocks." tightness.
    3. They build slowly, waiting for each new finished block to "SET" first, so it doesn't stick to the next block.
    4. On solid rock walls they APPLIED the unkown agent to it to soften it to a certain depth where they can easily "scoop" it out akin to the area around

      It wouldn’t. For a few reasons. One is that the focal point changes with depth so it would have to adjusted vertically in a linear fashion with time. Two, the molten glass would collect into a larger pool with time and and act as a increasing heat sink. Three, since light is not a physical object it has no force to move material out of the way to allow heat to penetrate deeper. This could be remedied in theory by having the light shine in on a horizontal path and the melting material would fall out of the way and then have a stepper motor move either the rock or the lens closer per unit time. That would require probably only a mirror or 2 and some precise mechanisms to track movement. Or the less engineered way is to just use a really thin rock.
