Wow, the color in this film is amazing after all these years. Somebody really took care of it.

Probably shot on Kodachrome. It has amazingly stable color, even when mistreated. Kodacolor, on the other hand, had remarkably poor color stability, but is what you usually see.

San Francisco of 1939 looks so vary clean and safe,
and no Human Doo Doo upon the Sidewalk!

Treasure Island was a very restricted part of SF, literally a man-made island halfway between SF and Berkley. What this looked like really has nothing to do with what either town looked like. It would be like looking for homeless sleeping on Main Street at Disneyland.

Wonder how many are still around at 85?

These incubator babies exhibits were really big for about 20 years at major fairs, say 1930-1950. It was new technology at the time, and saved a lot of infant lives. Infant mortality then was _much_ higher than it is now, and people were more interested in families, so this new technology interested a huge number of people.

@@lwiltonthis is a bot comment that doesn't want you to believe your lying eyes. incubator babies go far back into the 1800s , there is plenty of video and photographic evidence from around the british empire.. Frieda and her forty babies is exactly that.... Most of us westerners only have family trees that can be traced into the 19th century. While many are our great grands came from large families giving truth to the incubator as a means to raising a baby from early than nine months and repopulating the realm faster..Wake Up People... What i find interesting about this video is this is mans crude attempt at recreating what was once great, example the chicago and paris expositions which the controllers of the time ultimately destroyed..

My grandpa went to this with 3 high school friends and they drove there and back from Michigan.

1:30. I think that’s the band leader Ted Lewis with the top hat and clarinet.

It's interesting that at 15:39, it appears that a TV camera was shown. I know there was TV at the World's Fair in New York in 1939. I didn't know that TV was at the SF Exposition too.

I didn't either. I figured RCA spent all the budget at the 1939 NYWF. The one thing San Fran has that NY didn't was the Sally Rand ranch. They had nude chicks and made a lot of money.

@@Minong_Manitou_MishepeshuAnd the Sally Rand show was one of about five nudie shows on the Gayway at that fair. Couldn't get away with nudie shows today, and certainly couldn't name the fun zone the "gayway".

@12:43 Seriously... it's like 50 people watching a cast of thousands production. Only explanation I can see is most of the audience is on stage!
One other thought, the wipes done in the intro had to be hand processed. That alone probably took at least a day to produce.
    ✌😁👍

I think the wipes are very mysterious. Kodachrome, being a reversal film, would not have an effects copying service available to amateurs. But if the iris-out was done in the camera, how did the initial vignettes in some cases snap into being (look closely, you'll see it) and then proceed without interupting the shooting?

"Home" movie? Where did a home movie maker get iris wipe effects? Also, the camera techique (steadiness and slow panning) is not at all like the typical home movie. I would say "competent amateur" or even "professional photographer experiments with 8mm Kodachrome." Wish I could give it two thumbs up.

In reality, the "iris wipe" can be produced very simply on an 8mm home movie camera by opening or closing the iris. That's why it's called an iris wipe. It is true that the person who shot this did an amazing job --
