      Oh yes please... A frames. I'm in the process of building some green houses with the addition of a moat around them so the snow load that gets too huge starts compressing the walls will have somewhere else to flow...will send you pics upon completion. Haven't seen anyone else doing that yet. Know it's what I need in this alpine altitude.

      Yes especially if you find any permaculture greenhouses or conservatories set up for long term growth. Doesn't matter if its for food production or just for exotic warm plants. I love greenhouses.

    Thank you so much for bringing Chris onto the team and talking about gardening in cooler climates! Here in the Seattle area we can do a lot of the same things as California gardeners over the summer and fall, but I'm always a little stumped for what to do in the winter and how to extend the growing season. Thanks a bunch for the info :)

    Excited for this content! Few things that would be great to do future videos on:
    -hoophouse - don't go under 6mm plastic thickness, if use pvc pipe use electric conduit for uv good, if use reg white pvc use tape so the plastic isn't right on the pvc. Shade cloth is also important to review, we use 40% shade cloth which here in Mass goes on by end of May. Drainage is also important to plan for.
    Also, discuss the zone changes, for example we are in 5b, our hoophouse ends up being more closely to a zone 7. Extends our season by about 6-8 weeks on each end of the seasons.

    Chris brings the perception and knowledge of a cold-weather gardener. I garden in 8b Austin, TX where we have some freezing temperatures, but nothing like Canada. I've always fantasized about a house with a Conservatory or a Victorian glasshouse, but I haven't won the lottery yet. I haven't even bought a ticket because I keep buying plants.

    Random factoid I picked up over the years:
    The profession of constructing and repairing custom glass windows is called _glazing,_ and that particular trade job is called _glazier._ So if you're wondering where "glazing" came from, that's probably why, early glass greenhouses probably involved a team of glaziers.

    Right on Kevin....up here (Victoria, BC, a stone's throw from Vancouver!) greenhouses are a necessity to extend the season and get the starts ready prior to the last spring frost date. Glass was the choice for many years, but now a lot of use polycarbonate. Light, relatively unbreakable, you can cut with an exacto knife, and a higher r-value than glass! 🙂

    My roommates and I built our own poly tunnel last year. It’s by no mean beautiful but it’s made out of wood we got completely out of construction dumpsters. That helped keep cost super low for us. Only had to buy a box of nails (yes we used nails), poly, and pvc for the arch. Highly suggest the diy route of you want one but don’t wanna break the bank.

    I have Two small polytunnels with free ventilation last summer. There was a storm and the tunnels went flying :( this year I have enforced the tunnels (we have a lot of stormy weather after every period of warm weather. If it goes above 28C for more than a few days there WILL be a storm). A lot of folks have issues with "flying" polytunnels where at least the sheet rips off. Durability therefore is lower in zones with extreme weather. That's why im saving up for a polycarbonate Greenhouse. They last wayyy longer in this climate.

      Storm proofing an enclosed structure may be ventilating it on the lee (downwind) side. It's common practice in tropical climates to weather high wind conditions. I believe it involves physics and static pressure head. Open it there It's worth a try.

    This will be a wonderful series. I’m in central Texas, zone 8B, and am researching a possible greenhouse. I have plenty of space but it’ll most likely be sitting unused during our very hot summers. We don’t have harsh winters here but last year had a very frigid period for us, and a brief one this winter so I’m having to rethink having one without power for heating, even if it isn’t used much. My seed starting would be easier if I had the dedicated space. Looking forward to the next installment!

      Austin, TX 8b usually has moderate winter temperatures, but the awful experience of February 2021 took down the TX electrical grid. There would be an issue with heating the greenhouse or polytunnel when the temperature got down to 9 F.Generator would be expensive.

      We have a hoop house same zone. Heat is a struggle. I can get it to 10 degrees warmer than outside which doest work in the middle of summer. Make sure you buy a large exhaust fan. I didn't have the hoophouse over the winter but I am going to try a crockpot filled with water and put a piece of plastic lower so it doesn't have such a large area to keep warm. . I've also seen people use a fish tank heater in a bucket for heat

    I get a lot of cold humidity ( ocean fog ) in the summer ( June/ July ) and would like a video on how I can use my greenhouse during this time to grow tomatoes, squash, cucumbers etc. because they can get mildew if I grow them in the garden. My greenhouse stays warm ( 80 degrees +) and dry during these months and I can grow a second round of veg outside in August- November when the fog is gone. I’m a block away from the ocean and the fog can get very thick in summer when the valleys get hot.

    I worked for 5 years in a greenhouse and nursery that used polytunnels almost exclusively. One problem we ran into occasionally is that Quonset tunnels can't handle snowload. they collapse from really wet and heavy snow. We also used to put 2 layers on and use a blower to inflate the walls and help with insulation.

    ...I want to build a green house out of that invisibility shield stuff. I saw a video about it on TH-cam...
    Still, I was looking to build cold box covers for winter gardening, and i think I might be able to make use of polycarbonate! Even the info on the plastic sheeting is useful, as i'm more likely to go with a cheaper option XD; I'm stubborn and will not be hindered from producing!
    Still, we were talking about putting up a greenhouse in our driveway, as my husband hates backing on and off the major highway.

    • @paperburn
      @paperburn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alpinereid5265 First its cold up there,(i know , obvious ) second greenhouse orientation will make or break that project, third you will need a insulated north wall. fourth you will need some way of supplemental heat, geo battery ,solar mass, propane. but something.

    • @juliecolbourn8232
      @juliecolbourn8232 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alpinereid5265 just for what I want to do I think that a polycarbonate would have been better. Plus I think I spent too much money on it. It is not quite big enough for inground and haven’t figured out how I can do irrigation if I use pots (as I am sometimes away for a week at a time. And in addition, as per what Chris was saying that a poly tunnel doesn’t necessarily help if there is frost ( she has suggested blanket over or having a second layer and blowing up in between. So I wanted to use to put out seedlings to make things easier for hardening off.

      Wow! I thought my municipality was bad, as depending on where you live, they have a maximum building density per your area of land. There is a lot of resentment towards the municipality too, because while the building density of the properties owned by the average home owner is only 30% in my area, just down the street is a commercial property that will be a hotel and their building density is 60%. Really feels like it is kinda corrupt; one rule for one and another for the super rich property developers.

    I would love to hear about pollination in an enclosed environment. I built a small tunnel last year and had pepper plants in there. (I get super hot sun in Sonoma). They didn’t blossom. I dug them up and planted them outside in the garden and they thrived. Do certain plant grow better in an enclosed space?

    Thank you for the highly informative video! I've dabbled in the low end of small greenhouses, and I find they vary enormously in internal temperature, and are too small to have much thermal mass, so the temperature swings wildly between day and night. I have limited space, but could benefit a lot from protection from short-term freezes in late fall and early spring. The small greenhouses seem only usable for a few nights here or there. Are there good options for, say, an 6'x8' greenhouse? I don't have enough space in unforested areas for anything larger than that.

    I’m in Cyprus, in a Mediterranean climate so (esp in the summer,) my greenhouse would most likely end up as a shade-house. Yes, it would extend my season once winter arrives, but an actual greenhouse would only extend the season by about 3 months.

      We have a Mediterranean climate down in South Australia. I’m concerned about the heat in summer at 45C +. But, you’re right, I’d have to turn it into a shade house then take off the shading for winter. Cheers.
