How to Install a Pre-Hung Door

  • In this episode we show you how to install a pre-hung interior door.
    Why not!
    The door is a 'polycore' door. The pre-hung set comes standard with a pine jamb, pine clashing and MDF skins. The interior of the door is polystyrene, for added sound proofing without the need for solid timber.

    Reminds me of a new build where I got the job to install all the prehung doors, of which there were many, and locks etc. Anyway my immediate boss decided I was slow and would show me how he did it. I questioned his methods which didn't please him much. Few days later the owners come to me and say Mr Expert had told them I had installed all the doors, to which I replied nearly all of them. They proceeded to tell me of one door that was very poorly aligned... and yes that was the one done by our resident professional, I told them that was the one door I couldn't take credit for and they would have to speak to Mr 'X'. Well Mr 'X' was really shitty over it, unfortunately he had also gibbed round the door, and now had no idea what to do. I proceeded to explain to him why it was important to get it right first time and not get into this situation and the owners complaining, he couldn't think of anything to say except would I be able to fix it. He had been building for many years but his quality was shit.

    Loved the vid, just doing a 5 bedroom house load of door hardware in Lower Hutt, same handles. I liked the trick of screwing on the tubular latch and scoring around it, and the 18v router is top of the list. Planted stops are great for when the wall isnt quite plumb or an old door thats a bit warped.

    For any other amateur/diy door hangers out there - when you ask for a door at Bunnings that is "yay" wide, the measurement they give you *includes* the door jamb and when you get home you will find that it is too wide for your doorway. That's okay though because when you take it back to change it they will realise that they forgot to give you the wood for the door stop which is supposed to be included in the price.
    Pro tip: always get a good haircut before installing so that your door doesn't end up looking more well hung than you. 🚪😎

      Just been back to Bunnings today to swap doors over for this reason.
      Measured an 830mm gap. Figured an 810mm pre hung door from Bunnings would fit in the 830mm hole. Nope.
      810mm is the width of the door itself. The whole unit was 865mm.
      So an 810mm pre hung door won’t fit in a 830mm door way. Lesson learned, still confused.

      Absolutely, do it slightly different in my area of Canada but that was a beautiful finished product. Honestly our pre-hung comes a lot more machined, don't have to router the hardware as much. It's a similar process starting with leveling the hinge side, and then squaring the door and checking the reveal but you have to watch that your pre routered latch is aligned nicely.
      This process is closer to what I would have to do for a non pre hung door, and as such has lots of bonus detail.
      I love the channel because carpentry in New Zealand is just different enough that it grants an excellent perspective on why some things are universal and some are regional but the basic foundations are the same. Definitely picked up a few tricks and ideas that percolate even as a seasoned chippy!

      @@jareid82 oh 100% man very different in Canada. I'm in Calgary and I specifically ask for no prehung doors (if I'm not ordering directly). Reason is prehung to me are junk. Jamb header mortised into side jambs making it non adjustable, door stop glued on (pita because it grenades on removal), the jack studs are never plumb both sides could be out a different way (lazy framers raising walls that twist), I follow the drywall only as a guide and between finish carpentry tv and Scott Brown I haven't seen them check for rack.. I only use an 18g with 2" brads (10-12ish per hinge).. also never nail the jamb header unless it's a pair of doubles, adjustment always a good thing. No screws in my jambs ever I want that adjustability. It is cool to watch how other people hang doors but when you look at the methods and procedure I'd have like 3 doors squared by the time they are done 1 lol. I also have plywood jigs for doing strikers, ball catches, pocket door strikes ect. Am also one of the few that still machines doors on site with my ancient Bosch mortising jig. Lost art I guess.

      wow three years and I'm the first to reply to you! ok it's not too hard if you can understand this....you measure the distance from the inside edge of the door leaf edge to the flat part or back of the barrel tongue sticking out of door. Then that same distance is how far you set the striker inside of plate hole to the part that will align with the flat part of tongue. it may be confusing but that's the best i can explain without visuals

    Hi Scotty, question... there is a 2-3mm gap on the hinge side of the door stop to allow for paint. On the latch side it's hard up against the door stop. Any reason why not to leave a 2-3mm gap around the complete door stop?

    • @harrysingh-tj5pu
      @harrysingh-tj5pu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the door stop only works around the latch side of the door. He leaves a gap to be absolutely certain the door stop will never touch the door on the hinge side as the purpose of the door stop on the hinge side is only to look the same all the way around, not to actually stop the door.

    • @j444ke
      @j444ke 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct harry, always leave a little play to allow for paint, a good painter will still prime, under coat and paint a door. Those 3 coats do make a difference and the door will not latch unless slammed.
      I guess if your on site your main concern is it doesn’t rattle so you don’t get picked up on it. But on your own house or working for the general public be mindful of the paint because when it doesn’t latch after painting it’s the carpenter who will be going back to adjust it 👍

      I used some Packers on the latch side too. Got lucky with the hinge side, it was nice and plum so I used even Packers all the way down.

    I went away from using a Paslode finishing gun, sick of the mis-fires, now use a Senco or Hitachi gasless.

      @@ScottBrownCarpentry Never had issues with my current one, but worked out years back when on the tools, the battery terminals would get dirty and I would clean the off on a dwang. Naturally never told anyone how I fixed it, got to keep the mystery.

    I wouldn't put pre-hing doors in my house. The frames here are all mdf and are 1/2" (127mm) thick, absolute garbage. I like 3/4" (190mm) thick door jambs made of wood. The doors are installed more solidly as well as the mouldings .

    You did not use one single shim. The scabs you put at each hinge location were just starter spacers. No way that jamb was a perfect opening. Since this was an instructional video you have disappointed me.
