  • In December 2019, researchers from Taronga Zoo and UNSW teamed up with officers from ACT Parks and Conservation to rescue seven Platypus from the rapidly disappearing ponds of Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve which, like much of Australia, was experiencing extremely dry conditions. With nowhere to go, these animals would almost certainly have perished without action.
These platypus were housed and cared for at Taronga Zoo Sydney and have since been released back into the wild, but an incredible amount of effort and thinking went into caring for these wild platypus to keep them safe and healthy until such time as they could be released, and on today's Taronga TV episode Australian Mammal Keeper Claudia will give some first-hand insight as to how exactly this task was undertaken.
