    Off to the Races is partially based on the book Lolita. The phrase “Light of my life, fire of my loins” is in the first sentence of the book.
    There is a B-side song called Lolita as well

    • @bluewescott4631

      it’s not based off the book, she uses lolita as an allegory for her toxic relationships that she had with older men while still being young, also carmen IS lana, she was describing her experiences (in a hyperbolic sense) as a cautionary tale of everything that happened to her, no matter how nice the music sounds to not wish for what she had

    I personally think Dark Paradise is actually about a person you loved having died, she’s left remembering them and even when her friends tell her she needs to move on from the grief she denies it because even though the other person is dead, “when you find true love it lives on”

    through her albums, and mainly ultraviolence, she talks so much abt toxic relationships and relationship abuse. a lot of people say that she’s basically romanticizing abusive relationships- but when you really listen and dissect her lyrics you can see it’s her point of view and that she’s not romanticizing but ignoring the fact that her relationship is toxic. and it’s obvious in her songs of her being heartbroken and trying to forget the relationship yet she can’t. she really has a way with her lyrics and how she makes it into music which is so amazing to me.

    • @Luscent

  • @scrimbo5319
    @scrimbo5319 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    From what I’ve seen of others interpretations, the story of the album is this;
    Lana is in a toxic relationship with a man she’s obsessed with (born to die and off to the races), he then leaves her without a trace and gets involved with really seedy stuff with the mafia and money laundering (blue jeans). Lana reflects on the relationship (diet Mountain Dew, video games) and links the relationship to money and how it’s ruined her relationship (national anthem). National anthem is also about JFK and Marilyn Monroe, hinting that Lana’s boyfriend was cheating on her throughout the relationship. Lana hears the news that he has died as a result of his dangerous lifestyle (Dark Paradise), and after years she begins writing music and working through her grief, and gets into another relationship. (Radio) Fame is not as good as it seems, and she falls back into depression (the line ‘sweet like cinnamon’ has a double meaning, as cinnamon is bitter). Lana reflects on her life a girl that she knew when she was a teenager (Carmen).Lana’s new boyfriend, who is also rich and very toxic, breaks up with her and she’s left alone once again. (Million Dollar Man). Lana realised that every relationship she’s in is doomed to fail (linking to the title of the album - her relationships are born to die) and believes that she will never be happy. She looks back on all the men who have left her (Summertime Sadness) and how much she misses the innocence of her childhood (This Is What Makes Us Girls). She desperately wishes she could go back to her life before she got involved with these men. The bonus tracks also link to the story. ‘Without You’ is her reflecting on the million dollar man who left her, and ‘Lolita’ is another song about her reflecting on her innocence as a teenager. However the album ends on a high note with ‘Lucky Ones’ which is about a new relationship, except this one is successful and her boyfriend treats her well.
    TLDR this album is about Lana grieving her dead boyfriend and missing her childhood, before eventually finding someone who treats her better than the rest :)

    I think Diet Mountain Dew represents America because it’s a classic American drink. It links to the theme of the song taking place in New York and the American dream and all that. I’ve also heard a theory that because it’s a soda it links to ‘you’re no good for me, but I want you’ - the soda represents something that’s bad for Lana but that she still craves.

    • @i.m1ss.y0u.s0.f4r
      @i.m1ss.y0u.s0.f4r 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I think the addition of “diet” goes along with that. Because sometimes diet sodas still have a whole lot of sugar and bad stuff in them, but the word “diet” makes people think it’s better for them

They are her best songs in my opinion; "I Talk To Jesus," "Cherry Blossom," and "Take Me to Paris" are my favorites but they are all so good. Try going on soundcloud and going through a lana unreleased playlist, there are a lot of songs and they are very diverse. The self-titled album is just some of her unreleased songs that she had released but they took it down so she could have like a blank slate or something with born to die.

    A few important things about Lana: she has stated many times that she writes for herself and she aims to make her life art. It is also important to note she has had issues with alcohol (when she was young) and references it often in her music (she has been clean for a long time now 😌). She is deeply spiritual. Carmen and This is what makes us girls are song she wrote about her struggles with alcoholism. Her parents sent her to rehab at a very young age. That’s why in this is what makes us girls she wrote the lyric “I got sent away I was waving on the train platform crying cause I know I’m never coming back”. I love this album. It was what got me obsessed. Ultraviolence is my fav. But this one is very nostalgic for me. Been a fan since 2012. I saw her live in Houston TX in 2018. Such a magical night

    So in Blue Jeans the guy left, to follow his dream (his success) leaving her with a broken heart. But in Radio the opposite happened, she found success, she was the successful one of the pair; the ‘how do you like me now’ reflects that now he sees her as valuable. That’s my take

    most of lana's music is autobiographical. she tends to plays a lot with perspective and it really makes for amazing songwriting! carmen and this is what makes us girls are both about her past. she suffered from alcoholism as early as 14 and overall got into a lot of trouble like the line "stealing police cars with the senior guys" actually happened 😭 her parents sent her off to boarding school in the hopes that it would set her straight. she's been through some heavy stuff and we don't even know half of it! she's an incredible storyteller. love your videos!

    • @Luscent

    This albums is a comfort zone in all Lana's discography. My personal favorite is dark paradise, I think is so dark and deep, it's actually first time we are allowed to enter Lana's mind. I think till NFR came, this is no doubt the most listenned album because it has the most anthems of her discography, you know iconic songs like, Born to die, Blue jeans, Video games, National anthem, very poppy songs.

    I think all of these songs are actually based on her teenage years and early 20s. She suffered with alcoholism at 17 and when she was a child I’ve heard she was m0l3sted (her unreleased song “put me in a movie” describes this) which is why there is such an emphasis on older rich men and “daddy issues”. She had many toxic relationships due to this which also caused more trauma and is what a lot of her songs describe. Carmon is her talking to her younger self as everyone used to idolise her but underneath this fun party girl she was an alcoholic.
    Most of my favourite songs are on her ultraviolence album but her born to die album will always be the classic and i deffo started listening to her two young as it’s influenced me a lot. Her unreleased songs are also so iconic and the reason she has so many unreleased songs is because her first label didn’t take her seriously (as they prioritised lady gaga over lana which lead to competition). Once she left her label, her born to die album was able to be released. I think her song radio could be her talking about the struggle she’s had to get to where she was and boasting to her old label saying “how do you like me now” etc however I saw a comment saying how her song radio sounded like lizzy grant talking to lana and i’ve never thought of it from that perspective but it’s really opened up my mindset.

    • @Luscent
      @Luscent  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My 5 favorite Lana songs are:
    1. White Dress (COTCC) - abt yearning for the simplicity found in not being famous and living a quiet innocent life
    2. Mariner's Apartment Complex (NFR) - i'm not sure but it seems to be abt "people can change" and supporting your partner through their struggles
    3. God Bless America - And All The Beautiful Women In It (Lust For Life) - not the deepest song in terms of lyrics, but i love it so much; its abt not feeling scared as a woman alone at night bc she feels the power of community with other women and maybe celebrating certain qualities of america
    4. Shades of Cool (Ultraviolence) - daddy relationship, he's messed up and she can't get through the metaphorical walls he puts up
    5. Yayo (Paradise) - her boyfriend is a drug dealer and its his whole life but she loves him, its stunning
    notes: white dress and yayo are definitely growers and i did not love-love them at first (also i know you've heard white dress i'm gonna go watch that after this) and i think god bless america might hit a spot for me but not for other people and thats fine
    also APPRECIATE the power held in "cola" from paradise ✨

    I think This is What Makes us Girls also introduces how it all began. With her being a party girl, a little toxic, sort of her origin story. We don't look for heaven and we put love first, and how heaven was in his eyes and she'd rather not wake up from this concocted dark paradise centered around him. That's sort of how I see it.

    • @Luscent
      @Luscent  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3
