  • Rollerblading takes many shapes and forms - You've got everything from recreational skating to slalom, aggressive inline skating to wizard and then you've got Mushroom Blading.
Today we are going to investigate what mushroom blading is and how that's changed rollerblading. We will covered its origins, how it got it's name and how it's ethos has influenced they way people approach skating.
Some of the greatest, most creative and unique skaters have tapped into this style of skating and the results have been incredible. We are talking the likes of iconic skaters like Dustin Latimer, Dominic Sagona, Oli Short, Colin Kelso and loads more.
It's gone from being completely ignored by popular rollerblading to now becoming an inseparable part of it and i think skating is all the better for it.

I can’t speak for rollerbladers since I skateboard, but my favorite skate videos were always the ones where people weren’t taking it so seriously and making seem fun. That’s the stuff that made me want to go out and skate.

@@TomMoyse Variety is always nice. I do miss the raw spectacle and daring of the hammer days but understand why many people went in different directions. My knees certainly regret that hard style of skating, and I was NOT Chris Haffey or Carlos Pianowski haha.
Great video btw, now I've gotta re-watch Better Than Baseball and Gangstore...

As sort of a new guy in the culture, yeah seeing those massive hammers made me think ''Holy shit these people are cool'' But seeing the Roces gang be a bit more silly or just have fun with it and be creative made me go ''Holy shit, maybe I could actually try to do that, that looks so fun''
Maybe not the more zoomer oriented videos but you know. lol
Like you said in your video, less hammers make it seem more approachable and defo is the approach I am going for myself.

Little inside from my 12 year old me back in the past. With the little money you had and were every expanse from your parents needed a congress size argument, you had 3 choices. Do you want a skateboard, bmx or aggressive skates.
One buddy of mine wanted me hooked on skates and showed me dozens of videos but every video was the same from my perspective, big jumps and grinds, tons and tons of grinds. I immediatly abandoned the idea of skates. They looked so restrictive. Bmx and skateboards had on the surface so much more varity in tricks and spots for tricks.
Had i seen mushroom blading back then i had at least considered and probably got skates. This flowy dance like moves in every spot you can imagine is just so pleasing to watch. I absolutley love it.

I remember around the time Dustin started changing. I went to Arizona after Vegas and we met up to skate. He told me the key of rollerblading was peyote. Something easy to get from the desert. He wasn’t joking and we went out skating and he’s always been good but then I was seeing a flow I never seen. Yes I skated with Dion doing cess slides in the 90s, skating in ATL with Andy and Walt during fiziks, and I even lived with Mike Lilly in Tallahassee during roces with Dunkle. But seeing Dustin that week was the most wild and fun times I seen in skating. I’ve always been a hammer skater, probably why I’m in my 40’s and getting out of my bed feels like a trick. I say let everyone do their thing. I just wish people got paid enough to hurt themselves for a video part. FRB even in 2024, and that’s sad. I like Tom, and Nel but I’ll never buy rollerblade… I still skate, but my ankles feel like glass now. So it’s good to see fun from skating

I feel like I treated his skating the same as the mushy boys.
The older I got and more I looked back the more I appreciated and understood/admired there skating.
He was the first I saw do proper soyals and California rolls? (Is that what they are called?) and cess slides.
B Love & TJ Webber just made creative things looked polished. 👌 Dion Antony, Blake Dennis, Jason Marshall, Ryan Jackalone, Tim Ward, Tom Fry, Riggle definitely had the gravy at the start.
They stood out by not just doing grinds.

im a skateboarder and watch your stuff because it reminds of being in the 90s and blading, skating and riding bmx in the same day. I remember when every house had a pair of skates in the garage. I've noticed a similar trend in skateboarding too, people don't as get gnarly anymore because its not sustainable or sane in the long run. weird has snuck its way back into skating and its opened an avenue for kids who don't want to destroy themselves to have a career. love the vids man, keep it up

This was really well done… one point I would say may have been over looked that helped mushroom balding grow after “hammer” blading is the average age of rollerbladers. A LOT of pros that were throwing hammers then, are still around but damn near 40, so getting into a side of blading that almost guaranteed you were able to walk the next day was always gonna be the way to go.

  • @psiris09

Yes Moyse - its crazy to think back to my own skating during the 'big' era in the mid-late 90's and 2000's that my trick vocabulary, although 'core', seems so small to what is showcased nowadays. Talk about evolution, skating has progressed WAY further then I could have ever anticipated!

First rollerblading was bashed into obscurity with gay jokes. Then it stayed in obscurity for a while. Then rollerbladers stopped caring about what people outside think and they went back to doing whatever is fun and cool to them. Now it's gaining popularity again because people are inspired by the artfulness of it. What a journey. It's poetic that rollerblading's revival required nothing less than the reintegration of the happy go lucky spirit that earned rollerblading its banishment to begin with. That mushroom and wizard skating was so inspiring I have to go watch the full videos. I've been thinking about buying skates and getting into it again but I don't know what kind I want first, the fitness or aggro.

I remember seeing these guys on early TH-cam or rollernews. (Think it was buddy fuck whatever or similar)I loved them and people used to disagree with me on how good the videos were and unique. (Still cringe at the serated knife bit)
The whatsapp groups I’m in still don’t like the content and complain of lack of “hammers” 😂
But I think you did an amazing job here Tom, and really showed the influence that has filtered through to modern rollerblading.
There some great sections that showed elements of originality. Even seeing Charles dunkle grind that haggered rail on the able video was an eye opener. Or danny beers change in the fish and chips sections. Also ask everyone to watch the dirt box videos. Or even fish guys 4. Be great to have a list of unique sections somewhere that are worth a watch.
This is probably my favourite video of yours to date.

I love rollerblading i just think the skateboarding has a lot more skill expression that not rely on grinding. Mushroom rollerblading its the start pf what i think could be a different style (not saying it would be cool, just different) of rollerblading mixing parkour, gymnastics and other areas. I honestly think that rollerblading is not yet at the peak of its possibilities like with what we see with skateboarding reaching limits of human capabilities on mega ramps. In theory, rollerblading can be the ultimate expression of speed and flow through urban scenery mixing movement and new areas that were underdeveloped due to the drop in popularity compared to skates

Interesting coincidence Eye was literally juuust thinking of how fresh & bad ass Nick Wriggles skating truly was . A pure skater to the core!!!!! Talk about innovative... and how powerful and creative his skating was and is , noy many skaters skate likemthe old pros with amplitude, passion, and skating i ln the moment, i see alpt of ppl playing it safe per say, and not arising to the challenge of actually challenging themselves , innovation is what rollerblading is all about, its anout how iy feels, although to the untrained eye some tricks look silly , its all about creativity rollerblading is truly about freedom of feet. I wish more skaters wouod just skate and stop following wizard skating trends, and still go big and technical with ummm style 😋, you ever skated of mushrooms? Talk about fast feet for switch ups.... Supah fun 🍄🍄🍄
