Thanks Mark. Never could do this mat from ABoK. I used promanilla, Which measures exactly 5/16". Should have used 3/8" as I had to make a 5th pass and still had an upen pattern which required a lot of sewing to stabilize. Would follow your advice ,for indoor mats ,and use natural fiber as nothing sticks to polyprop and I don't want a flying carpet on kitchen floor .Jim in Michigan

Math; the nail spacing is 4x the rope diameter, minimum?
One rope pass length= mat width x mat length x 1/2(total nails)?

Hi Mark, I’m trying to make a rectangular rope mat for my boat in a specific size. The dimensions are 42 inches by 23 inches. Could you help me understand how to lengthen the rope mat to that size? I would really appreciate your help. Thanks so much!

Hi, thanks for very clear explain. I've tried this but it's not staying fixed together, what's the problem? The kind of rope? The corner lups are too big and empty! ... After first try, I put the first one away, provide a new map with less distance between nails (6 cms) because my rope is 5mms, and also use 5 lines instead of 4, although I've made a mistake near nail 22end. I really love and appreciate the result. ... Thanks a lot dear Mark. 🌸🌸🌸
... After that my sis wanted me to make a little hot mat, I again decreased the distance and put nails on each 4cms ... It wasn't a good idea becuase 4cms is not enough for 5 rope of 5mms thick! ... The hot mat is really nice and dense in corners!!! ... Finally thanks again, it was my first working with rope and you made it easy and funny. Unlikely I just understand this one which has map. The others those you just explain and make on your hands, I couldn't learn! 🙄

What if I want to use 1/2 in diameter rope and do 5 passes. I also want to make the mat larger 36 inches by 72 inches. How would I set up the nails and spacing?

It’s called a Fid (solid wood)
or Swedish Fid ( metal concave blade)
The Swedish makes it easier to lay the strands.
