I'd probably lose my mind after making 9-10 of these. Also, I don't care if Jean Michel Cousteau himself says it's waterproof, there is no damn way I'd go swimming with a freaking $150,000 watch on.
I suppose the fact that the watch is waterproof is more for peace of mind rather than because someone would actually go swimming with it. If the watch is that expensive, it's nice to know that it is at least durable.
Sorry to be late, but I was just going to post that there is also the whole other part of manufacturing those components. These guys are just slapping it all together, to say it rude.
its all about the build quality, to the connoisseur of craftmenship its all about the time and suffering and pain endured to make something. The more attention to detail, the knowing the craftsmen were stretched to there limit of endurance, there blood, sweat and tears that went into making it, makes me happy to purchase one
$150,000 is a bit too extravagant for me. I'm pretty happy with my $80 automatic. My future generations can just suck it. (That or I become a millionaire one day, then maybe I'll buy one of these)
what you could do is become a millionaire and keep the 80 dollar watch and SAY its a 150K watch. you may be lying, but when you got that kind of money those future generations aren't gonna ask questions
Swagasaus Xxfortwentei You don't have to know much about watches and you can spot a cheap one from an expensive one. The reason you buy an expensive watch is because other millionaires will always look at your watch, and respect your taste. If you have an 80$ one they probably won't even talk to you. It's kind of the same thing like you don't go to to an occasion that requires a suit with sweat pants and a t-shirt.
Christopher Williamson Not friends, but business men. Same thing, you wouldn't go to a important meeting with sweatpants and a plain t-shirt. And they judge you on the basis the more money you have -> the more power you have, and usually also how smart you are. Same thing if you are in a computer game and you see someone who is only lvl 1, you will judge them as a bad player.
The watch is now considered jewellery. The only time a watch is useful to me is when I go swimming at the pool and I want to keep time. An ultra cheap water resistant digital watch is just fine for the task.
for anyone wondering, the watch brand is "Blancpain" they produce mid level luxury watches to high level luxury watches that range from $10,000 to $150,000.
I work with watches (not make them but sell them) and I think they're wonderful, especially automatic watches like this one. I can fully understand their worth based on intricacies, parts and design. That craftsmanship is an art in itself.
now I can understand why some luxery watches have crystal glass back that shows its insides. I would be pissed if these beautiful artwork are shut hidden and be considered same as other mass produced factory made automatic mechanism
really, really impressive, it so hard to imagine such small machines work with such great precision... but I am happy with my 2 dollars watch, for now.
+r3koFresh They did so many takes where the narrator fucked up the pronunciation that they eventually just decided it was more trouble than it's worth to call it by its proper name.
I've always wondered why and how a mechanical watch can cost many many thousands of pounds? Well this video certainly Answers my own question, the art, precision, and craftsmanship is Astonishing
people don't buy these watches solely for time keeping. They are like paintings. No real use but good to show off. Also many buy these because they appreciate the craftmanship.
you really gotta be a specific type of person to have this as a job and do it for rest of your life.. I'm pretty sure that guy in the video makes ship in a glass thats size of a thumb in his spare time
This video explain why I have alwayts been so facinated wiTH THE MECHANIC OF A HAND WOUND WATCH. NO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND MY THINKING WHY DRESSING UP YOU ARM IS SO VERY IMPORTANT TO THE INDIVIDUAL CHOICES. I AND LOVE TO WEAR A DIFFERENT WATCH EVERY SINGLE DAY!
This is pretty interesting. It makes me wonder how in the world does one become a watchmaker with a firm like this? I think you would almost need to be born into it. Fascinating stuff.
And how do they make the pieces so tiny? How do they make those tiny screws? Very clever. And, back in the day, all those pieces would had to have been made by hand too !
there would be a constant stream of bubbles stemming from the leak. The air pressure is raised in the tank, once the watch is lowered into the water, the pressure is let off. If there were a leak the high air pressure in the watch would need to escape first before water could fill, the amount of bubbles would be equal the the amount of excessive air that is in the watch, those minor bubbles were likely air trapped in a crack on the case. I water test watches on occasion myself.
Apparently people don't get the phrase "It runs like a Swiss watch". That is why it is $150,000 because it truly the best of the best and never should stop working, craftsmanship is second to only perfection, so it is the best you can achieve. So to be honest it does make sense, also that stuff looks really complicated to do, so the training and experience behind those people is probably worth $150,000 just like a surgeon. Granted it is a lot but that is what buying the best usually costs.
oh my god! I do not have enough patient to work on those small parts and if some one push me (like my boss) then I will MESS UP EVERYTHING and I had High temper, get mad I throw away everything! Thanks God I am not a watch worker. Thank you all the good watch workers there on the fields . haha
In reply to all the commenters that are not happy about the price: You know, you can buy mass-produced mechanical watches at the same price as regular watches. I have a Seiko 5. New ones are under $100. It's waterproof, shock proof, automatic winding, and has day and date display. And because it's mechanical it doesn't need batteries. And because all bearings are jeweled and it has a low beat rate (6 beats per second), it only needs servicing every 30 years or so.
There are tiny tap and die kits which can make screws and tap holes with grooves as small as 0,25mm or less. There is also miniature machines like lathes which can make those tiny parts.
Many watches are cool looking, but if you had the money for a luxury watch you would buy one because the are beautiful pieces of engeneering and are very fascinating.
I used to think that. You get tired of the metal scratching, the gears stopping, the buttons breaking eventually though. Coughing up $500-1,000 is a really good investment, if you run through $35-50 watches every month or two like I used to.
So, who else moved their face closer to the monitor while he was assembling the watch? Thumbs up if you also held your breath as he was tightening those insanely small screws.
The reason it's so pricy is because of the craftsmanship, quality, and time in making these watches. The avareg watch you see at the store are assembly made with a couple carats of gold. Which is why some are a bit pricy but not so much. For the filthy rich these watches describe your persona and sometimes show superiority amongst the elite. Interesting video nonetheless.
Hmmm, yes - i use one. Made 2005'or 06', not sure... before that, i used Nokia 6300 which was just crashed by throwing, dropping.. battery cry for new, but the phone is still workin' only the speaker and pannel is damaged. But it's good as MP3 player. So that's why, right now i'm using older model - someone gave it to me, when he desided to change his. And there is still lots of life in it. Both phones never seen such a thing as service.
Mechanical watches for that price range have some 300 pieces AND might be made of precious metals. They're pieces of fine engineering and art, hence the price. Also, if you can afford a $150,000 then you're likely to be quite smart.
Time is very important for movement in battles. War is deep and complex. You may be on a mission for only 5 minutes to hold the line while your troop retreats. You may need to run a flank route right at 21:00... etc.
I'd probably lose my mind after making 9-10 of these.
Also, I don't care if Jean Michel Cousteau himself says it's waterproof, there is no damn way I'd go swimming with a freaking $150,000 watch on.
Its not the point, the point is if it does get wet, that it doesnt break
When you're a millionaire or billionaire that watch is chump change.
ProfessorFatMan no, don't say that. it depends with every person
***** You don't even know how much money I make and you're calling me stupid?
I suppose the fact that the watch is waterproof is more for peace of mind rather than because someone would actually go swimming with it. If the watch is that expensive, it's nice to know that it is at least durable.
Holy flying cows batman! 150 grand!
Hmmm, now I have to decide do I want a house or a watch!
lol
Yea, they only made the one watch... and it still hasn't been sold
Exactly ;D
these are very luxury watches for rich people like bill gates... you can get a 2 dollar watch if you want to
***** bill wouldn't buy this shit. he'd donate it to cure polio in a country.
No wonder it's so expensive, just look at the work put into it!
The sheer brilliance and beauty of a Blancpain! Well worth the money!
How are those pieces milled!!! THAT is making the watch. This is just assembly
Exactly what I was thinking.
that is probably a 3 hour video
MEOW And probably a trade secret.
Sorry to be late, but I was just going to post that there is also the whole other part of manufacturing those components. These guys are just slapping it all together, to say it rude.
"hey they are shooting at me, better check what time it is" - british soldiers.
Might be time for a cucumber sandwich.
actually watches began to used by artillerymen to time their barrages and looking at a wristwatch was easier than pulling out a pocket watch
two minutes to midnight.
bahah

Kalapallo If your friends judge you based on how expensive your watch is, then you have the wrong friends.

This job is example of human mind and skills triumph.

Love the way it comes to life whilst it's still being assembled- what a beautiful piece of engineering.
9:46 I think I saw a bubble!
fumbling with a pocket watch was a waste of time... ironic wouldn't you say?
I work with watches (not make them but sell them) and I think they're wonderful, especially automatic watches like this one. I can fully understand their worth based on intricacies, parts and design. That craftsmanship is an art in itself.
Now I really want to see how commercial watches are made! Must be fun to see machines assembling the parts in high speed
240p we meet again...
Oh wow, thats a brand new comment never before seen on youtube!,,,-_-
Oh FFS! The year 2010 (or what ever), we meet again.
Look at the video description.. this was uploaded when youtube is still using the 5stars rating system..
stupid..
now I can understand why some luxery watches have crystal glass back that shows its insides. I would be pissed if these beautiful artwork are shut hidden and be considered same as other mass produced factory made automatic mechanism
Watchmakers truly are a rare breed!!!
Such masterpieces! Though it makes my eyes hurt just looking at all the fine detail and meticulous work done to make those watches.
But will it blend??
You're quite beautiful
Michael Kazaragh shes 12, put it back in ur pants.
RaJhon Ad i'm in my 20's lol
I have received so many notifications for that comment.
But honestly, she is beautiful right?
In the history of watch making, someone, somewhere must have inhaled some metal.
If I were a collector, maybe I'd buy it. But for now I'm happy with my Breitling and Movados.
a piece of art an history on your wrist, beautiful.
guy at 4:08 is wearing a 15$ watch while making a 150,000$ watch..
You can see why they cost so much when you see the way they are made.
really, really impressive, it so hard to imagine such small machines work with such great precision... but I am happy with my 2 dollars watch, for now.
i wish i could afford one of these :) they're amazing and so are the people that make/service them
do they use "special tool" every time they have no idea how it is called .. ?
+r3koFresh It seems so.
"Special Tools" like the "Special Price"...
+r3koFresh They did so many takes where the narrator fucked up the pronunciation that they eventually just decided it was more trouble than it's worth to call it by its proper name.
I thought my $60 Casio was expensive.
Absolutely jaw-dropping beautiful craftsmanship.
So beautiful and interesting, it is a work of art. You can see the intricate beauty and craftsmanship found in mechanical watches.
All this hard work gone to waste by the Japanese electric circuit. lol...
Yea well my Casio has a backlight, eat that, Rolex.
+Geddiz I believe this is a Blancpan, Rolex aren't what they used to be.
Well, a special lume formula from Rolex will glow in the dark to make it easier to see in the dark.
This is why I love How It's Made!
gosh lot of precision and patience needed for that work =)
i have a 20 dollar watch waterproof digital 9 functions why would i need some bullshit 150 g watch lol
you buy it to let others, especialy females to know that you are rich,
forget it gold digger bitches they can go visit the land of sugar daddies lol
Because you got way too much money ?:)
mmmm maybe but im not rich i wish i was lol besides you might get robbed or killed
david marshall its funny because normal or poor people often don't understand rich people....
I love watches. Simply for the mechanical marvel theyare and the amount of detail that goes into them. My favorite brands are Citizen and Bulova :)
I've always wondered why and how a mechanical watch can cost many many thousands of pounds? Well this video certainly Answers my own question, the art, precision, and craftsmanship is Astonishing

Great video.Great insight on Luxury watch making.
I really enjoy watching this show, I have seen this episode maybe 5 times now. Great educational video!
Awesome watch - and so complex to piece together.
It's not a waste of time, watch making is a beutiful art.
I love such precise things, was sometimes thinking about to become a clockmaker.
you really gotta be a specific type of person to have this as a job and do it for rest of your life.. I'm pretty sure that guy in the video makes ship in a glass thats size of a thumb in his spare time

That special device sure does look like a simple clamp to me haha! Beautiful watch though.
It's a beautiful piece of engineering.
Now that's what I call hand-made. :)
stunning workmanship
A beautiful piece of engineering.
Thats a beautiful watch. I love tourbillion movements. One day I will own one.
I can't complain, I just bought a $150 LED futuristic watch from Tokyo flash, the Kisai X :) can't wait to get it
This is pretty interesting. It makes me wonder how in the world does one become a watchmaker with a firm like this? I think you would almost need to be born into it. Fascinating stuff.
this guys voice is so soothing
That's how luxury watches are made. good video.
Amazing workmanship right there
the amount of patience you need for this job.
very nice the hand made Watch!
my glasses broke while watching this hard work
And how do they make the pieces so tiny? How do they make those tiny screws?
Very clever.
And, back in the day, all those pieces would had to have been made by hand too !
Gorgeous. Amazing skill.
perfection at its limits....
A very useful and informative video for watch mechanic like me . Thanks.
it is really a beautiful video! this makes me think about first watchmakers...
It must be rally hard to create mechanisms and complications.
Wow, such a beautiful time piece :-)
Thats an beautiful Art

Exactly. They earned the money and they have the right to do with it whatever they want. They can even throw it in the sewers if they want.
Many watches are cool looking, but if you had the money for a luxury watch you would buy one because the are beautiful pieces of engeneering and are very fascinating.
high amount of patience time delegation is their behind making the huge watch world inside...
YES!! I have one and it's 21 jewels*
Good Choice!

Dang, those parts are so tiny! Imagine what a nightmare it'd be to drop one of those...
This music haunts my dreams.
i like to see the processes in which they makes such small gear!!!!
Out of all the "How Its Made" videos, this one could probably benefit from HD the most.
you'd imagine with all of our technology we could get machines to put gear here and there.
$20.00 is good enough for me-thank-you!
this is not a watch this is art :O
This is exactly how I imagined the Swiss Watches' making labs :)
Well that's one hell of a watch for ya!
Wow. Thats real talent
ITs handmade, and probably takes years to make. Plus it is serviceable, it isnt justa watch. ITs a piece of art
Blancpain watches are amazing. I wish I could afford to buy one.
fabulous detail!
People should buy cheap ones with metal band cause they're really economical to use.
The band never break and never need to replace battery.
Lol I'm just waiting for him to sneeze and then cry as all his hard work is undone =P
So, who else moved their face closer to the monitor while he was assembling the watch?
Thumbs up if you also held your breath as he was tightening those insanely small screws.
I owen PATEK Philippe dammm It a masterpiece , It's worth it , best watch ever
