Kayaking Down a SEWAGE DRAIN

- On a random day this summer, we got a call from our friends at HITCASE who told us we needed to clear our schedules to meet Team Supertramp up in North Vancouver to help film a video. Turns out, Creighton and Strat from Supertramp had seen our Epic Cliff Jumping video from North Van and wanted to explore the area themselves during their stay in Vancouver while filming a few videos. Before the cliff jumping though, we went to Lions Bay and spent a couple days taking Kayaks and a massive 13' stand up paddle board down the famous North Van drainage shoot.

Bryce Swiger No he could be right. Water from a sewage system goes to a waste water treatment plant, and storm drains usually just run off into deltas or something, but it could be either.

I actually live in the town this was done in (Lions Bay) and this is not a sewage drain. The Vancouver law of sewage disposal states it must be done within 500 feet of the shoreline. This is a manmade mountain-water drain created in the 90's by the municipality of lions bay to prevent mudslides. It was put in because a year prior to the construction, two brothers were camping in tents on their lawn, and during the night a storm came on and they didn't wake up. The storm caused a mudslide which killed both of the boys.

Kayaking the creek flume is not sanctioned. Creek flood infrastructure was put in place after a 1984 debris flow killed two Lions Bay children--locals would not think of using this creek for recreation. If you chose to flout that regardless, be aware that trespass on this provincial infrastructure is a crime not a misdemeanour, that the exit to the channel is affected by a 4 meter tide swing, and that every year volunteer Search & Rescue crews are put in danger themselves to recover injured victims.
