Example - Kollam port which is almost close to international shipping line, draft close to vizhijam, 72 ton lliber crane, 42 ton reach stackers, 40 ton forklifts, above all the huge port infrastructure on which cores of Rupees were spend by state government, all facilities lying idle for years, well built port buildings not functioning after completion, no customs deicated office, no immigration office. Above all we have well experienced human resource having worked in developed & developing countries. In some countries they have been the backbone of sea trade. All are there but nothing is happening. This has to be seen in comparison with other port cities around the globe as sea trade is a global.

I have experience in seaport for 30 years and let me say none of our port in India is no where near DPW ports in Dubai in terms of technology and sofstication of port equipments.We will see how this port compete with ports in Colombo which is made and equipped with own cranes and yard equipments. Vizingam port equipments are from same Chinese(ZPMC) company who run colombo ports. Our problem is that we do something at least 40 years late.Onething is sure that ports in Colombo will compete with Vizingam with very low handling and storage price as it is operated and equipped with same Chinese company which will compensate the distance disadvantage with respect to Vizingam.

To carry a container from USA to Mundra port in Gujarat via Vizhinjam port, the international shipping company like Evergreen or Maersk will have to carry that container from USA to Vizhinjam port in their own mother ship, and from Vizhinjam port to Mundra port in only indian feeder ship. But, Evergreen or Maersk cannot use their own feeder ship to transport the container from Vizhinjam port to Mundra port. But, if they do transhipment in Colombo, Evergreen or Maersk can use their own feeder ship to transport the container from Colombo port to Mundra port. So, Evergreen or Maersk will prefer to do transhipment in Colombo instead of Vizhinjam because, they can use their own feeder ship from Colombo port to Mundra port. They need not depend on indian feeder ship. So, India-bound cargo and containers will continue to be transhipped at Colombo, Singapore, Port Klang, Salalah or Dubai,, instead of Vizhijinam..

But, if I send a container from Maldives to USA via Vizhinjam, indian customs will check the container, causing delay..

I have experience in seaport for 30 years and let me say none of our port in India is no where near DPW ports in Dubai in terms of technology and sofstication of port equipments.We will see how this port compete with ports in Colombo which is made and equipped with own cranes and yard equipments. Vizingam port equipments are from same Chinese(ZPMC) company who run colombo ports.
Our problem is that we do something at least 40 years late.Onething is sure that ports in Colombo will compete with Vizingam with very low handling and storage price as it is operated and equipped with same Chinese company which will compensate the distance disadvantage with respect to Vizingam.

You are correct with my experience.
Only Indian registered ships are allowed to transport containers and cargo between indian ports according to India’s "cabotage law"... Example.. To carry a container from USA to Mundra port in Gujarat via Vizhinjam port, the international shipping company like Evergreen or Maersk will have to carry that container from USA to Vizhinjam port in their own mother ship, and from Vizhinjam port to Mundra port in only indian feeder ship. But, Evergreen or Maersk cannot use their own feeder ship to transport the container from Vizhinjam port to Mundra port. But, if they do transhipment in Colombo, Evergreen or Maersk can use their own feeder ship to transport the container from Colombo port to Mundra port. So, Evergreen or Maersk will prefer to do transhipment in Colombo instead of Vizhinjam because, they can use their own feeder ship from Colombo port to Mundra port. They need not depend on indian feeder ship.
So, India-bound cargo and containers will continue to be transhipped at Colombo, Singapore, Port Klang, Salalah or Dubai,, instead of Vizhijinam..

But, if I send a container from Maldives to USA via Vizhinjam, indian customs will check the container, causing delay..
