Enjoyed the video, Poppy! Always excited when you post one up. :) I love the light caught in the fabric and those beautiful transitions from cool to warm in the cloth.
Stunning painting, Poppy, and a joy to watch. I have a rigger brush that does not hold much paint. What type and size is the brush you are using (at 1:33)? The bulb on your brush seems like it would hold a much greater quantity of paint than the rigger I have.
Hi P, this type of brush is available under different names. Some makers call this a lizard lick brush. Funny name, hey? It has a fat belly like a round and then an elongated springy rigger like tip. The one I used is a Connoisseur brand Risslon Rigger, size 6.
Thanks so much, Poppy, for your very complete (!) reply. I try to limit my brush purchases, but this one fills a definite need. Thanks, too, for posting your videos. Your work is so dynamic.
Great video Poppy! Really interesting and helpful to see the steps, how you make such a technically challenging painting look fresh and spontaneous. Would you mind to share the make and type of brushes you use?
Hi Jon, sorry slow in responding. I use mostly Rosemary One Stroke brushes which are flats with really long bristles. I find the 1/2" size incredibly versatile. For the rigging I used either a No 4 round with a good point or a specialty brush like a rigger but with a fat belly. Some brands call it a lizard lick.
Beautiful sails, masts and rigging! Love the fine detail! You must be quite proud of this painting. Needs to be matted, framed, and hung on your wall!
Again, impressive talent. Much appreciated in your video.
I admire the practical approach and the realistic finished painting!
Thank you very much!
Poopy, so cool to see how this was done. Great tip with the brushes of different colors. Thank you!
Miriam Joseph hi Miriam! Thanks so much! Glad to be useful, 😊!
Brilliant, Poppy and congratulations on your award. I always knew this was a winner!
Hi Patty, thanks so much!
I know this was mainly about the sails and rigging but the sky is lovely too! I'd love to watch you paint a sky in a future video? Thanks for posting.
Hi Janice, that is a good idea. I have a lot of videos I want to make, just need to free up some time. :)
I love these demo videos, and that rigger brush is wonderful! Your eye for shadow colors is really wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing!

Hi Jared, thank you very much for your kind words. ( I've been forever getting this one up on TH-cam. Some projects take longer than others!)
Very excited to find you on TH-cam, love the videos
Hi Perry, glad you enjoy! I'm actually working on a new one tonight, hope to publish tomorrow.

I think I've seen that lizard lick before. Can you tell us where you got it?
I believe I purchased it from my local art supply shop. It is a Connoisseur Risslon RIgger No 6.
