  • Many throws coaches think that the Discus is the most difficult throwing event to coach . They may be right as the combination of Balance , Range of motion , Rhythm , Strength and Speed demands for the athlete a high level of coordination and skills and for the coach a high level of knowledge and experience . It is often said that it needs 10 000 throws to build a thrower and 100 000 to build a thrower career , but how many thousands and thousands of pivoting repetitions are needed to get an efficient and reliable pivoting technique in the discus throw ? Here are some exercises more or less common , to help learning and using the most critical part of this difficult technique.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I've seen things here that I never noticed by just watching the top competitors. I didn't realize that the turn was, basically, a hip swivel. You can bet that I will be playing this video many times and practicing what I see even more. PS - I compete in the Senior Games.

66 METERS!!! Good Lord, now I feel even more pathetic. The one thing I am finding out is that I am not spinning as fast as I think I am. It feels fast to me at age 69 but when I look at video of my throws I am amazed at how slowly I am moving. My distances should improve if I can make my spin and untorquing a lot faster.

are these effective for a roational shotputter? I see some excellent ideas for discus footing but they vary a little bit from the shot

Drills, drills, drills!!!!! Ahhh, if only I could get all my kids to understand this. Love your videos as I coach all Track & Field events, mostly Shot, Javelin and Disc. I like to share your vids on my FB page for others to see, but, so many of these kids, especially the boys, just want to throw and lift, throw and lift.

Near the end of the video, how far was that girl in the blue shirt throwing? It looked to be well over 100' (30m). On the video, it only shows ,10 and not the number before the ,.

one thing i have trouble with is my release. My execution is pretty good but half the time i would throw the disk out of bounds. Any suggestions?

@ciarajennings2010 Hi. What weight of disus you're throwing ? I'm at your age and i throwing 43-44 with best 47. 27 metres is not far but if you keep training, you gonna throw farthest. I am after a 4-5 months of non-professional training, and from 25m start i done this year by 47 metres. Keep practice.

Work on your block. A nice hard block will force you to stay in the circle.
