its so nice to hear someone actually defending the children in the walking dead, I've never understood how so many people don't understand the fact that children aren't going to be able to make the best choices 100% of the time in a constantly stressful situation
Personally I don't think it's about the children's choices, but the way they're presented in the story. They're mostly really annoying and contribute nothing, which means I don't care about them. When you can remove a character from the game and almost nothing would change says a lot about just how prevalent they really are. Marianna is endearing, caring, and vulnerable but she's not unbearable. Gabe is none of those things and they even have this "romance" between him and Clementine in a really unorganic and forced way. I can see a child like Gabe or Duck being the way they are in this kind of situation. But it's the way they're presented and how much impact they have on myself and the story that really matters, and when them being gone makes the game more enjoyable, it makes them a hindrance to the overall experience when you're forced to interact with them.
To add to this tho in the show world. People were fine with Sophia being dead. Carl, people tuned in to see him die out of hatred for the interpretation of the character. Henry, people cheered when he was on the pike. Kids in TWD like in everything else, usually annoy people and thus they hate on them freely.
@@winterfire1097I haven't heard anyone glad that Carl was killed off. That's pretty much what killed the show. I've never understood the hate of Chandler Riggs, though, I really enjoyed his portrayal.
@@winterfire1097thats absolutely cap on carl. Everybody who watched the series knew that carl was supposed to be the future of twd and was livid when he died
@@z.incognito6259 I Thought that too til I've read people hating on him, at least Chandler Riggs adaptation of him. I personally loved Carl, except in season 2 when he was being an ass. But yeah he was the future of TWD. 😭 fuck Scott Gimple.
They did Sarah so dirty. She already had her big scream of her father's death. It would've been better if she had a heart to heart with Clementine, which would only be accessible if you had good interactions with her. Then, at that wooden box thing, you would have an option to have Sarah go over and sit with the pregnant lady to keep her comfort, keeping her away from the fall which then can allow her to grow as a survivor.
This has been a great example of my issues with the choices not mattering with these telltale games...The fact that you could teach Sarah how to shoot/use a gun, but it never amounts to anything and or have any good pay-off genuinely makes my blood boil. Ben had a good pay-off when you keep him alive and he objectively did worse things to people in comparison to Sarah. Sarah because of the negligence of her father suffers and pays the price for it despite any effort the player could've made to help her. Even if Sarah had to die, at least some character defining moment would've satisfied me for her arc. Like a moment where she can stand up for her father because she mimics Clem's behavior, or her reaction to both her father's death (aside from shutting down) and how she'd felt when Carver had got his head bashed, did she feel emptier than before hearing about another human being dying despite how awful he was? Some part of herself relieved? Or even more terrified with the behavior Kenny was exhibiting as she's now alone with no family? Saving her from the trailer and having her die the same episode feels like such a slap in the face (pun intended?). She's a character that is punished for not being able to process change in a short amount of time because of her sheltered life. I guess you could argue that, that's the point of Sarah but it's always left a really bad taste in my mouth and reminds me too much of the tv show with how fast they disregard characters, like Jesse's child (and her whole family tbh but...). Maybe it's because we rarely spent enough time with her because of the larger cast, plus Kenny taking up the spotlight. If that weren't the case maybe her death would bother me less. I understand that twd doesn't hold back punches, and can be realistic (selectively) and is capable of showing a realistic death, especially for children. I always hated that Duck and Ben had to die, but I understood why it had to happen. It had to boost Kenny's characterization and motivations, Ben is a character by himself but he is also a plot device. But with Sarah and her father? When you take away Carver, it feels like there's ultimately no impact and or reason for them to exist at all, and that's frustrating given how interesting and important a doctor would've been in the apocalypse and as another father who still has his daughter alive this long.
Agreed! I know I hated Gabe because he just reminded me too much of my older brother in his teen years 😂. Tenn is a favorite of mine and I love his and AJ's friendship which hurt near the end.
I liked Tenn- and uh, admittedly hated Gabe when I was younger but not as much anymore. I was moreso upset that we couldn't have Clem being friends with another girl her age and instead forced fed Gabe crushing on Clem and dealing with that. I'm being hyperbolic, the third season with Gabe and Clem's relationship is least offensive and or bad but it didn't help with my perception with Gabe as a character.
Gabe is hated WAAAAAAAY more. Barely anyone likes him while most people like tenn but some do dislike him due to the deaths that have happened due to his actions/inactions
Sarah is such a tragic character to me. I always save her for as long as possible, because I actually really like her, though I understand why its a rare thing.
@@BLIND_BEAR I can't really explain it, but I think I have such a strong attachment to her because she reminds me of myself. I grew up very sheltered from the world, and I'm also autistic, so something in her character just speaks to me. I just hate how everyone else in the story seems to give up on her so readily, even though most of them are part of the reason she's the way she is.
Like, I understand how she comes off as annoying from a player point of view. But to me one of the key parts of what makes us human is taking care of people who can't always take care of themselves. We need to save each other.
I feel this way about both Sarah and Ben. My favorite Ben scene is when he defends himself to Kenny. He perfectly describes his predicament and most people don't see the scene because they choose to kill him off the minute they can
I feel like people forget that Clementine HAS to be competent because she is the motivation for Lee’s redemption arc and becomes the player character later. So of course she is more capable than other kids who were often hiding from the walkers and staying in one place. She’s just got more experience. It’s also worth mentioning that Clementine’s naivety got Lee killed, so she carried that guilt with her. This prompts her to learn survival skills so she doesn’t do something like that again.
One thing that always slightly bothered me is how some of these parental figures love making Clementine do a bunch extremely dangerous tasks that no 12 year old should have to do.
LITERALLY 😭😭 of course i understand it’s a game, but i’ve always had this in my mind when i played like hello?? you’re the adult, why is a child having to do everything
I think during the TWD at some point, they stopped differing children and adults to those who simply just survived. You can see how in the beginning some communities even killed off all those they considered weak and unable. AJ himself acts like nothing a child should that's because no child should act as they should (typically) in zombie infested world.
This reminds me of the Bonnie line “it must be nice being a pretty little girl, no one ever expects you to do a damn thing” I was seething like girl I did everything for everyone what have you done
@@adamfleming6272 I don’t think season 2 is a bad game I feel Telltale just had too many ideas for their own good, a lot of characters felt half baked and a lot of choices don’t feel like they have the same weight. There’s still compelling parts to the game and is imo better than season 3 though and I enjoy playing it overall
Honestly, I think Ben's problem is that he's often used as a plot device to get the plot moving and put the characters in negative situations to further the plot, especially starting the third episode of season 1. It's like the writers keep making him do the most infuriating things in order to kill off characters and up the stakes. Sure he's a dumb teenager, but the writers purposefully make him incompetent in mind-boggling ways, like taking the ax that was BLOCKING THE DOOR FROM WALKERS and being confused when walkers broke inside right afterwards. It's hard to like Ben when the writers go out of their way to DIRECTLY link him to worsening situations. I have much more sympathy for Sarah. Not only is she a byproduct of being coddled, she has no control over anything in the narrative OR in her life. She also might have autism and is a realistic depiction of a neurodivergent child who's been overprotected all her life and then thrust into harrowing and dangerous life situations. Plus her decisions don't end up putting her group in constant danger unlike Ben for plot convenience.
Ditto. I liked Ben and never really hated him, but man I don't blame people for being unable to gel with him when he's used just to get the ball rolling. I wished they could've been as considerate as they were when creating Clementine and replicating that to children/teenagers like him in the story.
Yeah, finding out how apparently all the kids were disliked was surprising to me because I liked them all as characters, wanting to be there for them and hope they would survive. Realizing they caught so much shade told me the type of person the hater was.
I played the games a long time ago, but didn't have an idea people hated the children in them, but it doesn't surprise me. People online love to hate on children, when the things they do aren't even their fault. I remember being so mad about Sarah dying at the very end, like I literally saved her at every possible scenario and took her under my wings, yet the game said fuck you and killed her in the most stupid way, plus the way Jane(?) acted towards her was also so disturbing. She clearly was sheltered from how this actual world works which was beyond her control, yet she is at fault and should be left behind?
Jane doesn’t hate Sarah, Jane projects her suicidal sister onto Sarah. She literally looks at Sarah and sees her sister who wanted to end it all and refused to adapt to the terrible new reality. She doesn’t blame her for being sheltered, but she does think that Clementine will die if she doesn’t stop trying to save Sarah. It’s worth mentioning that Jane doesn’t know how much Carlos works to shield Sarah from the world. That’s something that the players and the other group members know. So when Sarah struggles with the dangerous situations that she thrown in, she doesn’t realize that Sarah can actually be saved. She thinks, “it’s just like Jaime” and decides that Clementine needs to save herself from Sarah.
Really- like the ones that should be held accountable, are their parents. Just speaking in general since their parents enable and don't teach their kids that what they're doing is bad, it's never the kids fault. Like yes they can be frustrating but they're still learning and growing up too. As much as I can find them annoying, they're just existing and exploring the world as kids themselves.
It does genuinely boggles my mind when people hate on child characters when they actually act like children. I understand that it’s something that can be annoying, especially when in dire situations like in The Walking dead, but I think the games make it clear that how the adults around them treat those kids is what leads to their choices and survival. Players should he more annoyed at the parents for not teaching these kids the importance of survival in these grim scenarios. Clementine could have possible reached similar fates if Lee didn’t take the time to teach her important skills.
To be fair, people seem to resent children regardless of what they do. I don’t think our society sees kids as fully human. Many people just have kids because they see them as a status symbol, not because they have a desire to nurture another human being.
@@vickyvale711 This is so true and heartbreaking. Children are just made to be pumped out, seen as future workers and or what they could do for you personally. Never their own people until they grow up and either repeat the cycle or do better for their own, or those around them.
Honestly, if Telltale did anything consistently well, it was their writing for the child characters. I found all of them to be realistic in some capacity, if not entirely. Tenn was fairly intelligent and idealistic, but he also couldn't make certain decisions properly because he was just a kid and was never taught how to. Duck and Sarah were wasted potential; Sarah's perspective was very interesting and Duck handled things a lot better than one would imagine while still maintaining a positive outlook. And despite thinking Ben was a screw up that had the ability to make better choices at his age, he was still a very realistic character. Some people just don't think things through in stressful situations. I really liked how they delved into AJ's psyche. When he went through the "mine" phase in the game, a little late at his age at that, it was because he had only been raised around Clementine and had little to no socialization outside of her. And all he had really been taught were survival skills. As well as showing that he had some form of PTSD, as the result of constantly being on edge in survival mode, and couldn't handle being around the others at first. But, he had a strong desire to learn about and become friends with the others despite that and to overcome his fears to be able to do so. A lot of the decisions the kids were forced to make were so far out of their abilities because they were nowhere near being fully developed and shouldn't have had to make those decisions in the first place. It should be obvious from the start that they won't always make the best choices without guidance from an adult, which I feel is where the player is supposed to come in. At least in cases like Clem, Sarah, and AJ.
i’ve always had so much sympathy for ben. something about his situation in particular just broke my heart. one of my favorite scenes of season 1 is the scene in which he stands up for himself against kenny, not only because of what ben himself said, but because how kenny responded to it. the split second where his expression softens and he starts to try to apologize to or comfort ben. i think in that moment kenny, someone whose entire personality was one of “the family man”, someone who believes in the protection of children and the importance of family, saw ben for what he actually was for the first time: a scared child with nothing and no one left. perhaps even a reflection of what may have become of his own son had it been himself who died instead of duck. of course he had the right to be angry, but he realized in that moment that he let his anger blind him to the reality of the situation; kenny, in the blind rage over losing his own child, had been utterly cruel and uncaring towards someone else’s child. a child who didn’t have anyone to guide him or protect him anymore. a child who, while of course wrong in his actions, was only acting in the only way he’d been given a chance to act. that’s why i think kenny risking his own life to try and save ben’s, or at least give him a painless death, is the most satisfying end for both of them (especially in the event that kenny knows ben wanted lee to drop him). that despite ben being the cause of his own son’s very slow, very painful demise, he couldn’t let another kid die like that. it didn’t matter what happened before. it didn’t matter what could happen to him later. what mattered to him in that moment was putting ben, and his own grief, to rest, one way or another. that if he died, he would die practicing what he preached: protecting a child.
as a kid i just parroted the ideas of the youtubers i watched but playing the game again not too long ago when i had my own money it was hard to genuinely hate duck because he was just some dumb kid which could have just been clem at any point if lee wasn’t there
Yeah. Honestly even as a kid, watching TH-camrs play through the series, I was shaken by the hate towards Duck. He was just a kid. I kept on imagining him as one of my brothers who was his age.
Duck was barely on screen enough to be hated. I think some players hated him because he was kinda used as a plot device for the most part. He barely show up and when he does, he’s usually in danger.
I literally clapped Ben in another video . I did not go easy on him “why Ben is the most realistic character “ I have a little compassion for Ben but not enough. Ben was at the age of more complex thinking where there’s a connection of the impact choices make - every time he makes a bad choice he ALREADY knew that it was and decided to blow up the nuke. He knew what he was doing with the medicine otherwise why would he hide, conceal & be sneaky about it. He knew not to confess because they would leave him behind (most likely) or kill him (unlikely unless it was Kenny) and he chose not to confess because he’s selfish and wanted to guarantee his survival. I will never like Ben and I go through spouts of hating him. He is certainly a plot device like Emily from Until Dawn.
I'm a sped teacher and 100% agree that there are plenty of parents that underestimate their children and try to hide their disability from them. I teach 8th grade which is when most students with IEPs start attending their meetings, and about half of my students have no idea what their disability is and how it impacts them. So I get to have the "fun" conversation of this is what your disability is, this is what the research says it impacts and how it may impact you, and I give them a one page "IEP at a glance". It lists their goals, disability, and accommodations.
Season four are my second favourite after season one because the children characters were more lovable to me than most of the adult in the game. i love how they get along and worked together despite there’s difference/problems , also seeing clem relxing smiling making friends around her age and letting her child side out more makes me happy 🥲 they understand/ helping about each other because they do actually care about each other’s and that unfortunately not the thing for many adults in the game (not all of them of course) most of them where selfish and using other for there benefit. Sorry for my eng.
I never found Ten annoying. He's one of my favorite characters from his season. He's very introspective and endearing. While I understand the frustration with Sarah and Gabe's writing, they never bothered me either. Ben was genuinely annoying, but I never had the heart to give up on him because he was still just a hormonal teen at the end of the day. Duck is very sweet and I like him quite a bit. I'm childless but I'm more sympathetic to video game children than the average gamer, I guess lol.
I always liked Duck, he was so cute to me lol. I did dislike Gabe quite a bit, because apocalypse aside, he was a brat that sabotaged them purposefully. Ben I felt like was old enough to make better choices, so I don't excuse him as much as some people try to. I felt like Sarah was wasted. Her perspective was an interesting one that they threw away, even after the intense scene of saving her from the trailer. The only kid I disliked entirely was Violet. She was so extra and ridiculous, especially if you don't save her.
I only excuse duck Ben and sarah since duck and ben were both young and the apocalypse was still very new, and sarah was basically forced into being useless by the s2 group and her father. I can’t really forgive Gabe and Tenn tho because even though they are young the apocalypse has been around for multiple years at that point and they 100% know how things work around them and how other people are able to act
I feel bad, for sarah. I used to be so annoyed like a girl speak up for yourself. Then I grew up, and that's not Sarah's nature. She's very sweet, and I think Carlos was afraid of losing his daughter to the madness of the world and her growing up to be just as ruthless as everyone around them. They should've let Duck live and reunited with clementine later. Personally , I think they missed out on opportunity with duck to showcase. You can still keep your humanity and still manage to survive. I can imagine Duck is still as enthusiastic as ever, but still a badass capable enough to make tough decisions while bumping heads with Clem every now and again. I'm still pissed at Ben, though, but not angry. 😅
There should’ve been a way for Sarah to survive (at least longer) so you could see her evolve more to become a better survivor and see how Clem evolved her
everything you said about sarah rings so true. she IS strong and brave and capable!! i've always been sick of the fandom claiming otherwise, and even skybound's PR and social media posts. really it feels like the walking dead's child characters' downfalls (i.e. with gabe) are generally due to poor or clunky writing. the idea that people hate on the child characters for being useless when there's at least one ACTUALLY useless adult in every season has always been so ridiculous to me 😭 like what do you MEAN sarah was the most useless character in season 2?? are we looking at the same characters??
I have an Entire Thing about Ben, mostly bc I know about the cut line about the raiders and his classmate. I can't help but see him stealing and trading supplies with them as not a cowardly betrayal, but as incredibly brave for the kind of person Ben is. He knows these people, what they can and will do, and he is making the decision to take on this responsibility despite the danger it puts him in particular in on both sides. Ben is an older brother who was forced to watch what the raiders would do, and now lives in close proximity to an 8 year old girl. He was doing the best he could think of to protect everyone- to protect Clementine. Just like us.
That’s understandable however that REALLY endangered the group because it was a bad decision. He should’ve talked to the adults maybe Lily would’ve been receptive but it’s more likely that Lee or Katjaa would’ve listened as well. That wasn’t his role to play since that was the adults responsibility to handle. The worst thing about Ben is when he got himself mixed up in matters outside of his scope of competence, he endangered others. Then when others asked him for help on simple tasks they believed he could handle, he also failed them. He wanted to be treated like an adult and still remain in that special treatment of a child - the adults should’ve treated him better, should’ve helped him better but as a teenager he never spoke up for himself so ppl assumed he could at least handle the bare minimum.
This video is so amazing and such a long time coming. I really love how people are still discussing and analyzing this game! And I love how now a lot of the fans are dissecting this game a lot more differently than the recent crowd has. I feel like a lot of these issues with the child characters have to do with the adultification of clementine. By season 2 you no longer get the sense she’s just a capable young girl, but she’s heralded as one of the adults despite her age and immaturity. We rarely see Clem process grief in a messy, unclean way, or act in an annoying way because, yeah, by the narratives standards, she ISNT a kid, She’s a sweet mini adult. And in comparison having other child characters realistically ACT like child characters with the same capacity to want to learn to grow, change and BECOME capable, just automatically puts characters like Sarah, Gabe, Ben, and Tennessee at a disadvantage. Along with the writing of the games usually not letting these characters ACTUALLY grow and get taught the same way Clem was with Lee. I was under the impression we would eventually get a moment to teach Sarah to use a gun secretly, the same way Lee taught Clem, but it seems the writers for some reason similarly hated Sarah. I couldn’t shake the sense that the way they wrote her, and the way others treat her, and the way you have the OPTION to treat her reeks of ableism. Like anyone with anxiety, PTSD, or on a neurodivergent spectrum couldn’t POSSIBLY survive the apocalypse.
Excellent point with the ableism. I feel like Ben & Sarah represent something with the disabled - Ben is giving neurodivergent & Sarah severe mental health.
To be fair besides Clem and AJ a lot of the child characters have reasons to be hated, fair or not. Duck- Literally just used for Kenny's character evolution and to make him a better reflection of Lee. Besides the high five scene right before his death there's basically no memorable moments with him and his voice acting is some of the weakest in the series. Ben- Ben is one of the best written characters in the series but him taking the axe out of the door is both out of character and gets someone killed. On the topic of getting someone killed he gets Duck, Katja, Doug/Carly, Chuck, and Brie killed along with being Lilly's final reason for snapping. I like Ben but he gets people killed and I think it's both valid and makes sense if people hate him. Becca- Becca is fine since it's clear she's putting on a front of maturity depending on which dialogue routes you go into but since it's easily missable a lot of people see her as a cocky brat. Sarah- I've seen a lot of defense of Sarah over the years and I understand it but it doesn't excuse the awful writing of her by the creators most of them who hated her which felt obvious in episode 4. With your choices involving her not mattering it just felt like she was a loose thread they needed to get rid of. (Season 2's most common kind of character) Mariana- Very little hate gets directed towards her which is understandable since she's likeable, charismatic, and dies with a solid 15 minutes of screen time to her name. Gabe- I am a certified Gabe defender, I like the little punk way more than I liked Kate but there's a reason PewDiePie laughed when he got hit. With a stagnant character arc that only comes to completion if he dies, plenty of moments where he acts overconfident in a way that unlike Becca felt like this was his true thoughts and feelings, and so many unlikeable moments like where he calls you out for shooting Conrad in front of Tripp, you know the thing you had to do to save him and not betray Clem. While he's not the worst character in the series (or season 3 for that matter) if someone ranks him at the bottom of their tier list I would hardly blame them. Willy- chronic "mass starvation" and probably the ugliest face in the series definitely put some people off of him understandably even if I think he's actually one of the more solid characters from season 4 with a solid character arc and endearing moments the player remembers. Tenn- Tenn screws up, rarely lives, and when he does half of the time the player resets the episode to get their bff/love interest out alive instead of him. That's not to mention how he gets them killed and gets Mitch killed as well. I like him but it really does feel like the proper end to his story is in his death by the hands of his friend. Overall while I consider even my least favorite character on this list to be just kinda meh and my favorite to be in my top 5 characters I understand why any of the characters on this list are hated.
This was a badass comment 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Thank you for this loved the creative wording for Willy for a second I thought you were talking about the starving kid in attic 😂😂
I love this video so much I'm so glad there's others who will defend the kids of The Walking Dead Game. Honestly I've planned on making a video on all the kids of the TWDG, and I still may because there's still more kids to be talked about and I know there has been hate for the other kids that weren't mentioned. But this video is done so well, whenever I do make it I'm going to point to this video because its so good and talks about what I wanted to talk about for these kids. Well done!
Great video! Will watch all of your TWD videos until the end of time.. Sarah is definitley the most tragic case of these, esp considering the devs' intentions for her at the time.. they talked about Sarah and how they were ready to kill her out of just detest for the character that... THEY made come off as pretty helpless? when there were many instances to give her character growth to add some meaning or impact to losing her as a member. They did their best to portray her as dead weight that the player would be happy to have killed off which is such a weird sentiment for a character like her??? esp with health disorder undertones.. I love S2 more than most but I will always talk about the missed potential of Sarah surviving the observation deck attack and having a larger role to play in Arvo's story at the end of S2. I feel like it being Jane, Clem and Sarah discovering Arvo initially, and maybe have Sarah be the voice of reason and Jane pressure violence against Arvo to set that up for Ep5. At that point, Sarah could sympathize w Arvo for the death of his sister, stay and console him while they're in the fenced area, and then maybe even bite the bullet on the frozen lake instead of (frustratingly) Luke. This would amplify Sarah's character, showing her effort to be some kind of support to a teen close to her age, as Clementine has done for her all season (which could have been some semblance of redemtpion for her), could add some varation to alternate routes instead of it just being whether or not Bonnie is alive to leave w Mike and Arvo, and maybe even leaving Luke to be the voice of reason between Jane and Kenny in the car/at the OnRoute. Definitley some holes in there, but I'd argue has much more potential than what we ended up getting. ..& I didn't even get paid a salary to come w this, lmaoo
Ikr! It's more likely they would learn how to survive if only they had right people to help them. Sara was practically alone (despite all ppl around her) after her father's death, she needed time to process everything but it was almost like everyone (creators mostly) gave up on her. Ben had literally no one (except for Clementine) by his side and was expected to never mess up. They didn't have their Lee(for Clementine) or Clem(for AJ) so how could they know. It's applies almost to every other hated TWD kid
Here's the thing though, and I know I'll probably get hate for this: Season 1: Duck - Honestly, the apocalypse had just started. While it would be smart to teach him to grow up quickly, it's also tough to tell a kid that their childhood is over. I don't hate Duck; in fact, I think it's nice to see a kid being a kid, especially when things were still relatively new and everyone was still figuring things out. Ben - I never hated Ben. I found him annoying, but I understood him. He made some bad decisions, but he did what he thought was right. After he came clean about the drugs and felt guilty for the resulting attack and deaths, I wished I could have told him it was okay, but that he’d have to live with it. He needed a role model, not a bunch of angry adults. Personally, I would have made sure Ben knew what he did was wrong, but also that he tried to help and should come to an adult next time. However, taking the axe out of the door was incredibly frustrating. Even in a panic, at 16, you should realize that an axe lodged in a door is there for a reason. Season 2: Sarah - I get it, it's not her fault, and she is smarter than her father and others think, but she is a liability. I would have tried my hardest to save her and help her, but in the end, she was a liability. In a survival situation, if you become a liability, you put the whole group at risk. It’s harsh, but it's about keeping the group alive. Season 3: Gabe - I didn’t mind Gabe. He was annoying because he wanted to help and was naive, but he was helpful in the end. In the apocalypse, if a kid wants to help, let them. It’s a way for them to gain experience. Watching Javier could teach him how to survive in the future. I actually enjoyed his character. Season 4: Tenn - I’m surprised people hated Tenn. He had different views, but that’s okay. Different perspectives can balance out a group. Tenn seemed smart and, with time, could grow into someone capable of surviving. The thing I notice the most is people saying, “These are kids, why the hate?” or “They’re kids, it’s messed up to treat them like this.” I agree, somewhat. But it’s the apocalypse, the end of the world. The more naive and friendly you are, the faster you die. Being ruthless might help you survive longer. How you react and make decisions can either improve your chances or lead to a quick end. If you act like Sarah, curling up and shutting down, your chances of survival are low. I get it, not everyone can handle the stress, but you need to try. This is the end of the world, the end of humanity. Dead people are walking around, and they aren't waiting for you to get your emotions in check. It’s about doing what you need to do or dying. It’s harsh, but true. In this world, kids aren’t just kids; they are people who need to adapt and survive. There’s no room for toys or playgrounds. It’s kill or be killed, survive or die. Some might say, “So you think you could handle the apocalypse? Yeah, right.” No, I’d be terrified. But I know myself well enough to understand what I can handle. If you don’t know yourself well enough, you’ll never have to find out, and I hope you keep believing you’d be a good person. I’m not a good person, and I wouldn’t be in the apocalypse. I know what I can handle mentally, and I know that characters like Sarah or Ben would be people I’d have to leave behind if it came to that. Just my two sense..
Excelente 🎉 love your breakdown. Will disagree with no time for toys/playgroungs because sustainability is important for us especially in times of stress which they did well to showcase in S4 😄 it’s definitely a do or die type of environment.
What a brilliant and introspective view on this topic. The themes of this game are incredibly strong in general and even in its third season, rarely faltered in its strong themes
Loved that you made a video on TWDG. Been thinking about the game a lot recently. I feel like playing it is a good reminder of what it means to be a strong person during difficult times and having the courage to step up… and Clementine’s whole character
When I came back to the series as an adult, I had far more sympathy and understanding for the children of the series. I wish they utilized Ben more, almost in a similar capacity to Gabe where he can be useful if you give him the time and attention (I also thought he was a college student when I first played as a kid and then realized he was much younger when I played again as an adult). He had the opportunity given that he was the one to share the information that you come back no matter how you die because he saw it first hand when locking down at his high school, but I think they didn't know how to move the plot without throwing him (a character we don't have a connection to) under the bus. It's not even that he's treated as a man, he's treated like a pre-teen and used as a babysitter rather than a late teenager that they can train to becoming a man, and then they get upset that he's not a well-trained man.
I would've loved to hear your thoughts on Gabriel from season three. Right at the start of the apocalypse, his father leaves and goes missing, leaving Gabe behind with his uncle and stepmom. Then, in the present day, we see how his sister, Mariana, is just out of the blue shot and killed. Right at the start, Gabe is shown to be sensitive and moody; However, his sister's passing doesn't help much at all. We can tell he clearly means well; he wants to help Javier and Kate, and he wants to help when Conrad threatens Clementine in the train tunnel. Despite this, though, Gabe is also very impulsive, perhaps due to him grieving, and gets the player into trouble sometimes. I would've loved to see moments like this discussed by the characters later, an expanded upon; however, due to the clunky writing in ANF, a lot of character moments unfortunately don't really go anywhere. Anyways, I love your analyses on things! Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for making this video. It has been really bothering me how fanbase trear child characters - in the zombie apocalypse games (show/comics too though) that as I could say requires to analyse deeper other characters' intentions. If someone isn't a survival pro it doesn't mean they're a bad character and they should die. But it seems like too many ppl think so.
He mentioned that he was a highschool student once the apocalypse started. He is probably 16-18. Remember that he still has a bit of a baby voice that is slowly changing into a deeper one and that men tend to have growing spurts multiple times through their puberty. So, again, he is 16-18. At most, he is freshly 18 which is still a child in my eyes.
@@disassemblyfactoryChild or not I’m more than sure 15+ is old enough to understand what’s going on around you if you see people eating each other. Ben was just a really dumb character, he literally grabbed the hatchet that was keeping a door closed for an obvious reason
@@lebanesefirework You'd be surprised then at how many highschoolers I have seen who are a lot like Ben, lol. He probably didn't know the hatchet was being used to keep the door closed as no one told him. Like, I can understand why people dislike him, but to me, he is just as human as everyone else is. We make mistakes and some things, we don't understand to an extent until told. Being at 15-19, you are still learning about the world and how to slowly become an adult. 20-25 is what I call the trial period of adulthood. All to say is, I agree with the TH-camr and how she said a good percentage of us would be a Ben.
Man, this gave me a totally new perspective on the games and characters. These new pieces of information make me want to play the game with more sympathy and understanding in mind for characters I previously disliked for the same reasons most people disliked them. I can’t wait to experience it through a new lens.
i literally just finished playing the walking dead series for the first time and this video came up. i had no idea people hated the child characters in the game so much sometimes they're annoying but i never hated them.
This is off-topic, but I think you'd like a visual novel called "The House in Fata morgana."" There's a lot of depth to it, much like the other stuff I've seen you breakdown before. I think you'd appreciate the story it tells, and I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on it, that's all :)
This is an excellent dissection, and made me think even more deeply about characters I hadn't put much thought into. I'm going to assume that a majority of the people who played Season 1 were not parents themselves at the time, and BECOMING a parent fundamentally alters one's perspective on children. It's an endlessly complex dynamic, and we were allowed a snippet of it by playing these games. However, games only scratch the surface of the infinite experience of child care, and empathy often needs to be acknowledged and learned actively for people to come around to these child characters. It's hard to come to terms with a lot of our own feelings as children, such as all the times we were made to feel incompetent and inadequate, which probably also plays into people disliking the children.
I never hated Gabe. I mean sure sometimes he vents his grief and frustrations onto Javi in a way that's not really deserved, but in other ways he's actually more mature than he looks, unlike his dad and uncle he has no real interest in avenging his murdered sister Mariana, instead he's committed to trying to protect the family he has left, he even runs out into gunfire to protect his stepmother Kate when being in a state of terrified shock would've been perfectly understandable after his little sister had just been shot out of nowhere in front of him. And he later recognises his dad's more toxic and bullying behaviour as being wrong.
Lucky i love you so much!! Your voice is so soothing and i looove hearing you talk about the things i love you're so lovely your voice just does all the right things lucky!! Lucky ohhh my god you're the best!
In places that have a lot of individualist thinking, children aren’t considered people with rights and dreams. This is because they need nurturing and aren’t independent. Many resent children for this reason and the fact that they don’t understand the social norms/ rules that we adults just made up. The cultures that have this view of children often ended becoming Colonizers and dominate other groups who didn’t have this way of thinking prior. This is just my theory for why places with a lot of individualist thinking resent children.
Children are blank slates, they have to learn everything and fail multiple times while doing so. (Skills, Social nuance, emotional regulation etc) People forget they were in the same predicament, growing up takes time.
Many young people don’t enjoy responsibilities they didn’t ask for, children bring a lot of those, and if the children wasn’t taught (or even worse, was improperly taught) then there is a distinct lack of sympathy since they are seen as products (extensions of) of annoying people instead of individuals capable of growth
Calling katie from dr2 a liability is a bit crazy all she did was sit there and play megaman in a safe house while waiting for zombrex and that's so easy to get it was a complete non issue for me katie was a nice way to differentiate chuck from frank making him a father with responsibilities rounded out the insanity of the apocalypse also being able to gift katie objects like a literal tiger was an awesome feature
Hi lucky, I hope you see this. First i wanna say i’ve been watching your videos since you first started making The Hunger Games content on tiktok. Also, I really love your voice! I guess i wanted to ask you if you’d ever play Red Dead Redemption 2? It is known for being a great (arguably the best) story with complex characters. I feel like it would be right up your alley with the type of videos you make. If you get a chance please look into it, i feel like you’d be pleasantly surprised.
Maybe it’s because I have a soft spot for children but almost none of the Walking Dead kids bothered me except for Gabe and that’s only because he was written to be realistically moody teenager.
Same. Absolutely same. The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure if I had children of my own, I wouldn't have the required patience, even if I know they deserve better.
0:00-0:07 Clem: “I don’t think so, he’s always blaming me for stuff.” Lee: “Like what?” Clem: “Putting a bug under his pillow.” Lee: “Did you do it?” Clem: “…..Yes.” 🙂
Found you're channel through the critique of the clementine books and i gotta say you're work is really great as well as the editor behind these videos
Honestly, i always just felt bad for Ben. I always saw him as an older kid, as in he is capable but he still doesn't always think about speaking to others about his decisions, or think about their consequences
While in TWDG I harbor no hate for any of the kids, but in the show. I mean. *Lizzie Samuels appears* 💐😥🔫 🥺 Also, since I am on the spectrum and you brought that up, I do have to add Eugene Porter (main TWD/comics) is canonically Autistic according to Robert Kirkman.
I think the worst part of it is the fact that you choices matters NOTHING. Whatever you say or do, the best you can is just to make the doomed character live a little longer. You can't help Duck and Katie, you can't help Ben and Sarah, and you can't fuck up with Clem. Whatever choice you make - in most cases the ending will be same. You can't choose the one character mutually exclusive another one (except Caley n' Doug), and you can't really put an efforts in buildup of their personal growth and character development - their fate (n' yours too) is sealed, and all of them and you will end up just in the same way whatever choice you make. Of course I can't save anyone of them, but maybe atleast I can decide depending on my choices, goals and fuckups, who'll live to the end, and who will die like a hero or like a moron? Maybe one day we will see a TWD based game with a REAL very winding paths, where you can come to completely different results of your deeds if you follow completely different paths in two different walkthroughs.
Ah! I really wanted to watch this video, but I can't figure out what's off. I thought you were talking far too fast, but 0.75 speed is too slow. I can't do it 🙈🙉
2:41 people hate my boy ten?! WHY?! He was so cute and way too precious for the apocalypse! I treated him kindly and let him and AJ be real good friends
Absolutely nottttttttttt bro what. Ppl hate her at first ofc cause she starts bitchy n untrusting, but definitely the vast majority end up actually going the violet route
@@BLIND_BEAR sure, the majority of players do end up choosing her. but those stats are representitive of every single person whose played the game, not just the fandoms public opinion. i feel like WITHIN the fandom is where she is most hated
Nope, most people in the fandom don’t hate Violet. Even people that think of Violet as a bitch still see her as competent (not evil) and so she doesn’t get much hate. If you watch a lot of play throughs, you can see that most of the players express an extreme anger at Tenn because of his naive nature compromising the entire group’s safety. Being seen as useless will always get a character more in hate in apocalypse/ survival media. Thats why people don’t really hate Lilly until season 4, but still talk about their deep hatred of Ben or Sarah years later.
@@vickyvale711 fair enough. it’s strange tho, i’ve watched a lot of playthroughs but never seen this extreme hate towards tenn. idk maybe i just happen to watch the ones that don’t have that

This was a great analysis!!! I can’t wait for more from the walking dead and from other series. I would love to see relationship analysis or story analysis from series like Arcane or Stranger Things, two of my favorite TV series. I would also like to see discussion/analysis on the life is strange game series with the new game Double Exposure approaching I would love to hear your thoughts on each game.
OMG!? I recognized your voice from TikTok. I didn't know you had a TH-cam channel. Immediate subscribe~ Edit: The Ben section almost made me cry. I always hated how mean literally everyone is to him. I understand the frustration but it always hurt. Your analysis of all the characters is so refreshing to listen to.
its so nice to hear someone actually defending the children in the walking dead, I've never understood how so many people don't understand the fact that children aren't going to be able to make the best choices 100% of the time in a constantly stressful situation
Sooooo true
oh my god someone finally said it, i’m so happy, sarah deserved SOOOOO much better it’s not even funny😭
Yeah Sarah started to piss me off and her father was definitely a hinderance and it sucks cause she could’ve lasted had she been taught to.
bro i did my absolute best to preserve her and to teach her to be clem jr 😂 only for her to die anywayyyyy
i had no clue tenn was so hated. i would’ve thought people hated gabe more
Tenn was a little sweetie. I agree, only psychos would hate him. Lol
I aint gonna even lie, on my season 4 run i sacrificed tenn to save louis
Sarah is such a tragic character to me. I always save her for as long as possible, because I actually really like her, though I understand why its a rare thing.
Why’s that? /genq
It happens a lot in Season 2
Yeah to be honest I hate Carlos for how she coddled Sarah.

At least in cases like Clem, Sarah, and AJ.
i’ve always had so much sympathy for ben. something about his situation in particular just broke my heart. one of my favorite scenes of season 1 is the scene in which he stands up for himself against kenny, not only because of what ben himself said, but because how kenny responded to it. the split second where his expression softens and he starts to try to apologize to or comfort ben. i think in that moment kenny, someone whose entire personality was one of “the family man”, someone who believes in the protection of children and the importance of family, saw ben for what he actually was for the first time: a scared child with nothing and no one left. perhaps even a reflection of what may have become of his own son had it been himself who died instead of duck. of course he had the right to be angry, but he realized in that moment that he let his anger blind him to the reality of the situation; kenny, in the blind rage over losing his own child, had been utterly cruel and uncaring towards someone else’s child. a child who didn’t have anyone to guide him or protect him anymore. a child who, while of course wrong in his actions, was only acting in the only way he’d been given a chance to act.
that’s why i think kenny risking his own life to try and save ben’s, or at least give him a painless death, is the most satisfying end for both of them (especially in the event that kenny knows ben wanted lee to drop him). that despite ben being the cause of his own son’s very slow, very painful demise, he couldn’t let another kid die like that. it didn’t matter what happened before. it didn’t matter what could happen to him later. what mattered to him in that moment was putting ben, and his own grief, to rest, one way or another. that if he died, he would die practicing what he preached: protecting a child.
this video made me realise that ben working with the bandits basically caused a chain reaction that lead to clementine's survival
Great perspective 🤩🌸
as a kid i just parroted the ideas of the youtubers i watched but playing the game again not too long ago when i had my own money it was hard to genuinely hate duck because he was just some dumb kid which could have just been clem at any point if lee wasn’t there
@@ettaetta439 BRO SAME- that always bothered me as a kid, cause I was just like him
sarah deserves so much better than this fandom and the writers
"ben has not been given any opportunity's then to just be a colossal frailer." DAMN lucky go easy on him
I literally clapped Ben in another video .

I didn’t know ppl hated Tenn. I can’t imagine hating him, he’s was one of my faves in S4.
Season four are my second favourite after season one because the children characters were more lovable to me than most of the adult in the game. i love how they get along and worked together
despite there’s difference/problems , also seeing clem relxing smiling making friends around her age and letting her child side out more makes me happy 🥲 they understand/ helping about each other because they do actually care about each other’s and that unfortunately not the thing for many adults in the game (not all of them of course) most of them where selfish and using other for there benefit.
I can’t really forgive Gabe and Tenn tho because even though they are young the apocalypse has been around for multiple years at that point and they 100% know how things work around them and how other people are able to act
people still talking about twd telltale series makes me happy😩
There should’ve been a way for Sarah to survive (at least longer) so you could see her evolve more to become a better survivor and see how Clem evolved her
Agreed. I was gutted to see her die not long after I made Clementine convince her to keep moving in order to survive.
a video dicussing the nuances of Telltale's TWD kids: doesn't include Gabe
just as things should be..
Period. Gabe is relevant 😅 I found him annoying AF & also a liability even if he proved to be capable of survival.
everything you said about sarah rings so true. she IS strong and brave and capable!! i've always been sick of the fandom claiming otherwise, and even skybound's PR and social media posts. really it feels like the walking dead's child characters' downfalls (i.e. with gabe) are generally due to poor or clunky writing. the idea that people hate on the child characters for being useless when there's at least one ACTUALLY useless adult in every season has always been so ridiculous to me 😭 like what do you MEAN sarah was the most useless character in season 2?? are we looking at the same characters??
They could never make me hate you Sarah 😔🙏
I love Tenn sm he reminds me of my younger self
It also backfired though, so it was a double edged sword.
AND he proved that he couldn’t even handle the bare minimum of survival & support.
babe wake up lucky is saving our lives again
I actually loved Sarah I felt so awful when she died
Please!!! Continue your Hunger Games district analysis series 🙏🙏🙏
@@lexl3398 Definitely. While I just think Ben is just young, Sarah definitely gives autism vibes
I had never noticed that Carlos/Stranger parallel before, wow
Very nice video!
(Season 2's most common kind of character)
Mariana- Very little hate gets directed towards her which is understandable since she's likeable, charismatic, and dies with a solid 15 minutes of screen time to her name.
Willy is seen as ugly ? I found him cute.
I never really hated any of the children other than Ben. Quite the contrary, in fact.
Your voice is perfect for these kind of videos 😭😭
I'm a massive Ben and Sarah defender and I never thought about the fact that Ben was thrown into this with zero guidance
like at the end of the day they were kids. Sarah and ben were so hated for not growing up/adapting fast enough
Here's the thing though, and I know I'll probably get hate for this:
Season 1:
Duck - Honestly, the apocalypse had just started.
Season 2:
Sarah - I get it, it's not her fault, and she is smarter than her father and others think, but she is a liability. I would have tried my hardest to save her and help her, but in the end, she was a liability. In a survival situation, if you become a liability, you put the whole group at risk. It’s harsh, but it's about keeping the group alive.
Season 3:
Gabe - I didn’t mind Gabe. He was annoying because he wanted to help and was naive, but he was helpful in the end. In the apocalypse, if a kid wants to help, let them. It’s a way for them to gain experience. Watching Javier could teach him how to survive in the future. I actually enjoyed his character.
Season 4:
Tenn - I’m surprised people hated Tenn.
The themes of this game are incredibly strong in general and even in its third season, rarely faltered in its strong themes
i relate soo incredibly hard to ben. your explanation of his character couldn't have been more correct
Loved that you made a video on TWDG. Been thinking about the game a lot recently. I feel like playing it is a good reminder of what it means to be a strong person during difficult times and having the courage to step up… and Clementine’s whole character
I’m glad people still make content on this game, I just got back into it a few weeks ago shdnfb
I love Sarah so much i wish she live longer
Ben wasn’t a kid, he was an adult even before the apocalypse.
@@lebanesefirework Teenagers were eating tide pods and planking at 15-17 dude...they don't know what they hell they're doing and they do stupid shit.
Wake up everyone Lucky just dropped a new walking dead vid
And he later recognises his dad's more toxic and bullying behaviour as being wrong.
the video i didn’t know i needed!
didn’t expect to see a dead rising clip but yay!!
Lucky i love you so much!! Your voice is so soothing and i looove hearing you talk about the things i love you're so lovely your voice just does all the right things lucky!! Lucky ohhh my god you're the best!

Why do you think resentment of children as a whole is a cultural norm in a lot of places?
Ok, but there is no excuse for Gabe
absolutely
He's 13, and look who his dad was.
YAHHH LUCKY POSTED ABOUT TWDG
Omg i didn't know you were on youtube! I love this analysis and your tiktoks
We're so ... back
Hi lucky, I hope you see this.
Incredible video thank you i can only imagine how long it took to make so really thank you
Lucky going more in-depth into walking dead and last of us games 🍿🍿🍿🍿
Count me in
I absolutely adored tenn while playing twd. he is precious and receives an odd amount of hate
They hate my baby !?
Maybe it’s because I have a soft spot for children but almost none of the Walking Dead kids bothered me except for Gabe and that’s only because he was written to be realistically moody teenager.
Same. Absolutely same.
The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure if I had children of my own, I wouldn't have the required patience, even if I know they deserve better.

Clem: “I don’t think so, he’s always blaming me for stuff.”
Lee: “Like what?”
Clem: “Putting a bug under his pillow.”
Lee: “Did you do it?”
Clem: “…..Yes.” 🙂

Name a better mother then Clementine, I'll wait
@@adamfleming6272 good choice, I highly respect that
I loved Tenn so much. Idk how people disliked him.
I don’t hate any of the kids are people just as characters
Bro what happened at 14:58 😭
I was genuinely jump scared
Honestly, i always just felt bad for Ben. I always saw him as an older kid, as in he is capable but he still doesn't always think about speaking to others about his decisions, or think about their consequences
Wheres district 11 and 12 deep dive
The walking dead is great game
TWDG LETS GOO
PLEASEEE look into the game Season: a letter to the future, it's so underrated it pains me😭
While in TWDG I harbor no hate for any of the kids, but in the show. I mean.
*Lizzie Samuels appears*
💐😥🔫 🥺
Also, since I am on the spectrum and you brought that up, I do have to add Eugene Porter (main TWD/comics) is canonically Autistic according to Robert Kirkman.
I didn't like Sarah but im retrospect i actually like her
Lucky you always feed us
I think the worst part of it is the fact that you choices matters NOTHING.
15:28 i'd actually argue that violet is the most hated character by the fandom. idk i've just seen way more criticism towards her
Absolutely nottttttttttt bro what.
@@vickyvale711 fair enough. it’s strange tho, i’ve watched a lot of playthroughs but never seen this extreme hate towards tenn. idk maybe i just happen to watch the ones that don’t have that
@@BLIND_BEAR She's the most decisive at least. And I really like Violet, but I understand how people could not like her and her actions.
... I see you failed to mention Gabe, who is easily and by far the WORST child character! I was very curious to see how you were going to defend the indefensible

Edit: The Ben section almost made me cry. I always hated how mean literally everyone is to him. I understand the frustration but it always hurt. Your analysis of all the characters is so refreshing to listen to.
I wish you'd talked about Gabe! I actually feel like I see way more hate for him than I see for Duck, Tenn, or even Sarah
