I was there, this was just a gift from heaven… And I was the one who yelled “swing low!!” And seconds after she sang it 🥹 I know it was not for me… But it felt great
Thank you so much for posting this. This is really touching!! Thinking about all these years of her ups and downs… Interestingly, this also proves that the way she sings is absolutely correct as the age doesn’t affect her voice at all!! You’re the best dearest Kathy ❤
So happy that this thrilling video of Kathleen Battle was posted. I vividly recall hearing her voice as well as the voice of the magnificent Jessye Norman for the very first time in March 1990 in Carnegie Hall during the PBS broadcast premiere of Great Performances: The Magic of Spirituals. I still have the CD and would love to own a DVD of this unforgettable concert! Kathleen’s voice at 75 is still so pure and strong. Thank you for mentioning in your comment mentioning both Kiri te Kawana, who just turned 80 this March (2024) and Leontyne Price, who is is 97. How wonderful both have maintained their glorious talent. I was in eighth grade way back in 1960 when our teacher first introduced our girls’ chorus class to photos and recordings of Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland, among prominent women opera singers of that time. I first heard Kiri te Kawana at Prince (now King) Charles and Diana’s wedding in July 1981. How exciting to hear her sing wonderfully in an episode of the last season of the series of “Downton Abbey” on our local American PBS station!
What a great night. You must hv no sitting in front of me. Similar perspective. Loved whn she point/shook her finger at the person behind me who was recording with the flash on. Thank you for posting.
I was there and I screamed: SWING LOW PLEASE!! Just a second before this moment started to be recorded. I almost die! As this is one of those sublime and supreme Spiritual songs, and secretly is the one I traveled from México to the States to (hopefully) listen in live and vividly from this country treasure gem named Kathleen Battle.
@@danielcabrera4161 What a beautiful statement you have made! And what a beautiful gift you received, being able to hear the song sung live by Miss Battle...and right after you called out for it!
@thetonibrelandagency3477 thank you!! She is my favorite artist, my friends and family know how crazy I am for her and this was truly one of the best moments I ever had!!!
Thank you for posting. One of my favourite singers ever. Saw her many times in recital and with orchestras in the 1980s and 1990s. Delighted to hear her sounding so amazingly fresh at this age. Virtually unheard of with classical singers. Truly stunning. That last high note was vintage. I've heard her sing that spiritual many times and it always brought down the house, though I wish the audience here had waited and let her finish. For anyone who never saw her stunning concert of spirituals with Jessye Norman in the 1990s, which was broadcast on PBS and released as a CD on DG, many clips are here. I recommend her jaw-dropping performance of "Lord, how come me Here?" Absolutely heart-stopping. th-cam.com/video/Pj_AcW1YD6w/w-d-xo.html
I just realized that even though Aretha adapted many styles and developed her techniques over the decades, Aretha here and Aretha at the end of her career is basically the same
No vocal change at all since the Spirituals in Concert performance. She's a remarkable singer. She hasn't sung opera in so many years and she developed a career with pop and jazz musicians. It's now difficult to categorizee her. Why no musical accompaniment?
She often did at least one encore without accompaniment when I saw her in recitals, just for a change of pace. So beautiful and direct to the audience, with not even a piano. Just that stunning voice. She had accompaniment in other parts of this concert.
I have been a fan since I saw her in 1987 at the Vienna New Year's Day Concert Herbert von Karajan caused an absolute furore by having a singer in the concert. As far as I am aware it has been the the only occasion. I don't know the year of this performance of 'Summertime', but it it is stunning: th-cam.com/video/RyadsHUBpWc/w-d-xo.html
She still has that beautiful, silvery tone. What a technique ❤
Dang! At 75, her voice is still kicking.
Yes!!!
Bigtime!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amen!

I remember seeing her when she first came back in 2016 at the Met Opera. It was a night to remember. I'm glad she has returned once again. Brava!
