I saw her perform this song live in San Francisco, acapella style, and I was moved to tears. The purity of her voice was like an angel calling to my soul. Thank you Ms. Battle for being a vessel that beauty can reach out to us though.
TRANSLATION: Kathleen Battle is one of the most sublime sopranos that I've ever heard. A voice that makes you think of the beauty of live, of heaven, of perfection.... TOTALLY AGREE! Well said.
I check into this post at least weekly - Kathleen Battle is inspirational - she makes me feel better in these turbulent times. I am sure the angels in heaven sound as wonderful. God Bless you and thank you dear Kathleen.
So beautiful! I love gospel, spirituals, hymns, the old songs of faith performed in a church with everyday people. I used to sit outside just that church in the village where I spent my youth. Me and my bike and bubblegum just listening. This performance though, is so incredible! I've heard both Kathleen Battle and the Boys Choir of Harlem many times in my life but never together, and never like this!!
Kathleen Battle is one of the finest Soprano's in the world, and she performs this piece superbly. In it is not only represented the history of African Americans, but it is a glimpse into early American history and tradition. For those with an ear we should be grateful for her still beautifully angelic voice, and for Americans we should be grateful for her tradition.
this is so beautiful i cry every time the boys are so incredible its so nice to see the youth being in the arts.and kathleen ...well her voice says it all
The great DIVA - this is beautiful. I've loved Kathleen's voice for years and blended with the boy's choir is a real treat. You go Kathleen - how high can you go?
Thank you Lord for giving us this very special lady who warms my hart with feeling that carry me to that special place - its just over there, its close...I can almost feel it when I close my eyes - I think its there...somewhere over the rainbow.
Doing a search for Kathleen Battle on TH-cam, I realize we often forget (because of her dismissal by the Metropolitan Opera in 1994) what an enormous career she had and with how many top-flight colleagues she successfully collaborated: von Karajan, von Stade, Jessye Norman, Alicia Keyes, Wynton Marsalis, James Levine and on and on -- Ms. Battle appeared in Japan, in Berlin, at the Kennedy Center, seemingly everywhere over time, singing in as many as six languages besides English. Let's hear it for a diva of championship caliber, if an apparently capricious and difficult one offstage.
I'm not a opera fan but this is just plain beautiful and soulful. I'e listened to 40 yrs. of gospel, folk jazz and r&b and to all of you haters of thia performanc, I feel sorry for you that you can't let go of your preconceived notions and just listen to the glory.
This has the big sound. Very professional and well done, heart felt. Reminds me of some of the big movie type greats made back in the day. Very classic.
quelle émotion, ces jeunes chanteurs noirs, barbara dans toute sa sensibilité, l'orchestration magnifique, avec une pointe de jazz , à chaque fois je suis bouleversé!
Thanks footcheck for the post--it moves me. The soaring through the octaves at 2:58 is wow. Every singer(and listener) of this timeless spiritual is smiling
Carnegie Hall Christmas might be my favorite Christmas CD ever. The arrangements of the music are fantastic and Battle sounds amazing (although she does hold out every last note longer than everyone else in the building...but that just cracks me up)
This is a profound statement. Each style brings out perhaps different aspects of the song. This interpretation speaks of a home in paradise where peace and beauty reside. In this style, in the high, beautiful notes we one can hear (if one's heart is open to it) that high, beautiful place of which this song speaks. What an artist. Thanks for your comment "sing4ever14" and thanks to footcheck for posting this.
Are you kidding me? That was beautiful. Just because you do not particularly care for an art form doesn't mean that you have to disrespect it. This is a beautiful arrangement, you don't get much better than Kathleen Battle.
Those boys backing her are so focused and into it. What a joy to see and feel. Their blend. Cho cho san is a writer in phoenix. 3 14 2021. What a combo of instruments and voices. Gtouching the countenence of the almighty
Still hoping that someone with a good videotape of this will upload it in a higher resolution - this was uploaded in 2007, and at only 240p. It is such an incredible performance that it belongs to the ages, and needs to be saved for later generations as part of American culture. It should be saved in the best visual and audio clarity possible. So if you have a recording, get it to someone who knows how to put it up at the higher quality that is now supported on TH-cam.
