I can add some perspective for folks over 40… started rowing in Jan 2017 at age 43 (6’ / 250lbs). I took about 8 months of regular training to get prepared for the marathon. Did a lot of 10K and half-marathons leading up to my first full marathon. As you can see in this video, there is a lot of physical preparation to consider (fitness, comfort, machine settings, nutrition, hydration, rest, etc…) but the net result of taking time to address each of those physical/mechanical issues beforehand will reduce the mental load for your marathon attempt. If you execute your preparation properly, you will be successful your first time out.
- Leading up to your first marathon, you should go over 25K at least 5 or 6 times and go over 30K at least once or twice to gauge your body’s responsiveness to long distance rowing.
- Keep the handle moving! row with one hand, take a drink, relax the pace but KEEP THE HANDLE MOVING!
- Break up the marathon into 5K chunks (take a drink every 5K and reward yourself with a few seconds of relaxed pace)
- Make sure you get the drag factor set properly.
- Protect your hands… having a callous built up is best… but gloves or tape can be useful too.
- Bubble wrap can save the day… have a piece ready to put on the seat when you ass gets sore.
- Getting up off the rower having finished a marathon really feels good! Getting up off the rower after having to abort a marathon halfway through feels bad. Be prepared to abandon a “personal best” time in favor of FINISHING. You can always try another day, and the next time you will be better prepared mentally. I have had to go through this situation many times.
In 18 months, I’ve done 14 x half marathons, 9 x 25K to 35K, 6 x full marathons, 4 x 50,000m & 1 x 63,291m (FM + HM)
I now weight 228lbs… Erg on!
Would love to know more about how you split your training up over 8 months when preparing for the marathon..... I am planning a marathon row, followed by a marathon air bike followed by a marathon road run (for Cancer charities) in July 2018 and need all the help and advice I can get.... I have did 12km row in 50:02 this week so got a base point but know there is a long way to go to get in shape for this....
Lance your a beast. Well done.
A very informative and useful video. I am 59 and the longest i have rowed in one session was 2 hours when i covered 19,357 metres. You are absolutely correct on emphasizsing the mental aspect of rowing for a long time. I was running through all sorts of things in my mind to help me with the time scale. The amazing thing was that at the end i COULD have kept going but felt that it was best to stop at that point. I believe i CAN do a marathon and I have set it it as one of my goals for 2019. Excellent tutorial from someone who very obviously knows what they are talking about..
Cheers.
Blair.
This is next level, I do 10k, 4x a week.. I'm 43 years old. The thought of this row is just insane.
You really are a skilled coach, great nature and knowledge. Good luck in the future
The most reliable overview of training. I learn a lot from you. I've also seen other episodes. I am 49 years old and my resolution for the year 2022 is to do a marathon. It's a pity that I don't have such a good coach. All the best from Poland :)
Great video, well done. A fresh pair of batteries is a nice idea too. If your like me, a non-professional athlete, do this with hydration & nutrition AND a planned recovery day or two afterwards. Don't talk yourself out of doing your 1st marathon. Use 30:00, 45:00, 60:00, 90:00 rows and half marathons, to develop your time in the rowers seat, to build your ability to row at a pace that works for you, over long time periods. At 55, 5'8", 158lbs, I will be aiming at sub 3:20:00 for my second marathon.
@@JohnYoga Thanks for the kind words. Are you planning on padding your seat with large bubble wrap? Your butt will thank you. I did my 2nd Marathon in 3:17:29. Best of luck and let us know how you do.
Great presentation. I’m just 8 months in, getting ready to do my first 1/2M, and really envy those who have done this or more. I’ll get there! I did watch this on the CF Games, and it trashed some of the most fit people in the world. It’s a real workout, no matter who you are. Thanks for sharing!
Thankyou did it today 3 hours it took 😊 stroke rate was 24 throughout 2:08 was the ave pace.
5ft11 88kg in BW thanks for the help
Great effort. 2:08 is fantastic.
Your info is spot on, your 2k video just by watching it i took 20 seconds of my time. People underestimate the rower as a workout tool and also as a mental endurance trainer lol thanks for the video.
Again, crystal clear presentation style Cam 🙏
Thank you, excellent presentation. I'm planning to close this year with a Marathon row. First time ever that I try this. Your tips right on time for me, thank you again.
Absolute gold as always Cam! Every games athlete should watch this.
Doing my first marathon this morning. I did my half last week and got 1hr 27, so aiming for sub 3. Video was great and very informative. Have my notes and ready to go!!! Wish me luck!
Good luck!!
Did it and got my marathon pin! 2:55:55!
@@sgtpepper7719 Awesome! Which drag factor did you use?
I tried today for the first time, took me 4:50 hours. I didn't exert myself thogh, I think I could do sub-4, but definitely not sub-3
I'm currently eyeing off the season world mark and this was very informative. Well done.
Thank you so much for this video. My coach and I are planning to do the full marathon and maybe the (new!) 50k row in preparation of the 100k (first as a team, after that and individual attempt). From my experience with the half marathon I can only say, that *everything* you said is 120% correct and everyone who want to give it a try should watch this several times. I you have the time, I would love to see an in-depth video about the 100k. :)
I'm about to attempt the 100k in a week! Trying to shoot for under 7 hours, so I have to get under a 2:06 pace. It'll be tough.
Glad to hear it, keep up the good work.
Nice to have you back
More videos from now onwards?
Definitely
Thank you for the many good advices, I will definitely try them out :-)
I'm going to row a marathon for my 62nd birthday in January. I've done an Ironman and several marathons . . I'll most likely break up into parts...concentrate on the first hour and nothing more..than second, third. I know I've got the physical capacity so it's just figuring out how to outsmart my brain.
This helps a lot, thanks for this!
Good playlist IMHO.
I'm rowing a marathon in two days in my 50th birthday...
I will save up for a Concept 2 model D (rowERG) rowing machine soon.
That's faster than my 2km split....
Who remembers the Boston rowing marathon…. 50k……and running with the boat around Bardney lock 😊
Superb advice - much appreciated
At what drag should I have this on during the row? Currently at 70%.
I'm 43 did marathon row 2 hrs 47 mins 1 second.. 10 on damper setting. Felt very hard but enjoyed it.
Legend.I would suggest rowing at a lower damper setting.
Justin Grearson. 10 on dumper setting that's pretty stupid
@@460enrique call it hard work
After 20 years I still use damper 10, every time I'm advised to lower it I try, but I just have to row faster to make up the speed, and I can't do that. I even used damper 10 for my 100,000 meters (7h:48:32.7 aged 59)
@@justingrearson2185 olymic rowers don't use 10
can u recommend a gel seat?
hello, excellent video I wanted to ask you the number that we should put to the rowing machine the number from 1 to 1 that is on the outside of the chain, (surely you said it and I did not realize). Don't know how is the technical name in english. Again, thank you very much for such a good video.
Great video!
yo whats that for a monstrous biceps
I'm not ready to watch it yet
:D
I rowed a 1/2 marathon last weekend (1:30:33) for the first time. Prior to that, I had only ever rowed up to 10k once... and that was two days earlier. Before that, I once rowed 7k and 5k maybe a 1/2 dozen times. I'd like to start training for a full marathon row and while I'm able to find a bunch of tips on how to approach the challenge, I cannot find any actual training plans. Is there one you can recommend?
What drag factor is used in crossfit games? Would be very different with for example 230 compared to 120.
120-136
The question is not how to row a marathon but why anyone would row a marathon.

3:20. Vision went a bit funny. Ski erg marathon was way worse.
Man....I do 6-7k in 30m and I feel like I'm going to die...can't imagine 42k lol.
My best 30:00 row pace is 2:05.4\500m. My marathon pace was roughly 2:23:0\500m. Choose your \500m pace accordingly. Imagine a half marathon or even 15K to build your mental relationship with going long. You might be surprised if you were to try 60:00 @ 2:25 - 2:35\500m and see how that feels.
"A mushroom cloud is going to explode"????
You are the Jesus of Rowing religion! Your videos are like reading the Bible of Rowing.
Im not very religious, but thank you. What other videos would you like to see?
should have cleaned the litter before filming !!!!!!
You don’t “literally hit that wall”. It’s a metaphor.
