I recently watched a video on the lore of the protogen species, they had it really rough from the beginning, because they were a fabricated species made to as expendable as regular machines, just with higher operative capabilities, literally bred and built to fight or work with no free will. Then they had some more advanced versions built which basically fought back against their creators, and so they became their own independent species that was acknowledged as more than just the hardware that made up a majority of their very beings, despite being *grown* in test tubes and then basically retrofitted to have interchangeable appendages with nanites and a bunch of complicated sh*t. Basically, kinda depressing origins, but the result was a very cool and versatile species that can do many things thanks to how they’re made
