Hopsin Recalls Being Outcast By Black People For Speaking Proper

  • www.vladtv.com - In junior high and high school, rapper Hopsin was placed in special education classes due to "really bad ADHD." "ADHD is not a real thing to me, but that's what they called my actions," he says. "But to me that was just my instinct, and my body saying 'you don't belong in this environment.'"
The 30-year-old, Panorama City native felt ostracized by both White and Black people growing up, leading him to have mainly Mexican friends. Because he speaks properly he was categorized as a "certain type of Black" by other Black people. "They just felt the need to disown me kinda, and always try to like, fight me, so it was difficult growing up," Hopsin remembers. He says "it still happens," especially with Black women, but because he's respected for having bars these days it hasn't been too much of a problem.
Find out what else Hopsin had to go through growing up as he tells all in this exclusive clip.

I can understand how you might feel that way, but Hopsin is a different story. People dislike him for being hypocritical, immature, judgmental, and generally making awful records. Somebody might have dissed him for the way he talks once, but the real problem is who he is.
Overall, he seems like an attention seeker, and I kind of think everybody should just ignore him.

+Yorel G. different times. its different. the media has really ruined the image of black people in the last 20yrs. All of them are assumed to be ghetto because most people assume black people to be drug dealers, killers, rapists, robbers and thieves, fighters not lovers, rappers, or just simply athlete's AGAIN because of the media which includes tv, magazines, any type of news outlet. Given all those labels just mentioned associated with it is the lack of the ability to speak properly SO PEOPLE THINK. The media doesn't promote black business men and their accomplishments on business startups, university degree's etc because its not popular culture to speak about it AND the media is the one's who originally started what pop culture is by telling people what it is and people feeding into it and the machine recycles itself every 10yrs for the new teenagers and new young men and women in their 20's to follow the trends etc & brainwash and continue to keep racism, stereotype's and hatred alive THROUGH THE MEDIA MACHINE.

I 1000% understand where he's coming from. Growing up other kids always told me i "talk white" or "proper" etc, when i'm just talking how I talk. It's sad that we stereotype our OWN selves as having to "talk black" or "ghetto". You're basically saying we aren't allowed to be articulate or intelligent, and that that's a white people only thing, it's pure ignorance man. So many black kids have literally been SHAMED and bullied for being smart and getting good grades in school, it's just sad man, it's like to us as a race what's bad is good and what's good is bad. Everything is reversed, and we wonder why we as a people have so many issues and problems....

Quiet kids(me), bad kids and foreign kids. The problem was that no matter how well you tested they wouldn't let you out of the program unless your parents damn near threatened to sue the school district. And I went through the same "speaking proper" thing when I was young. The younger generation of black kids probably will not have to deal with this as much. Oh and instead of Mexicans it was Asians for me.

There's speaking proper English and there's speaking improper English (or ebonics). They were probably jealous of your ability to speak proper English, they felt inferior to you in that aspect, and rather than look at themselves they tried to hate on you...you'll see that pattern play out in so many areas of life.
There's nothing wrong with speaking proper English and nothing wrong with speaking improper English. It's just actions with consequences - both actions have their own set of consequences.

    • @inspectahdick2406
      @inspectahdick2406 8 ปีที่แล้ว

You're correct in that there's nothing wrong with speaking the way that you've learned. But putting it as a matter of speaking "proper English" vs. "improper English" is just reinforcing this false right-wrong dichotomy that undermines the point you've just made.
It's a simple matter of two different (spoken) dialects of English, each with distinct but internally-shared vocabularies and grammars, and which are in turn equally valid on their own right. What you label as 'improper English' or 'ebonics' refers to the dialect classified as AAVE or AAE-African-American (Vernacular) English-which has been evolving for hundreds of years alongside other English dialects in North America.
One 'prestige' dialect might be perceived as more proper or correct than another, but that's purely a matter of societal attitudes and power dynamics.
There are also loosely agreed-upon standardized grammars or prescribed grammars (like style guides) for written English, as there are for most written languages, but this also has nothing to do with inherent 'correctness' or superior logic of one way over another. (It's also very uncommon that anyone adhere even loosely to written standards when speaking naturally.)

I can relate to this well, in fact I think ANYONE who didn't behave a certain way according to their color or culture because they were taught it's wrong, can be able to relate to this. Lol when I'm around people and they hear me speak and say jokingly, "You don't sound black" I smile and say, "why thank you my dear". If someone says "You sound like one of those white boys" I simply ask, "how do I speak black" or "what's black" or "have you heard Dr. King, Malcom X, Angela Davis etc speak before, would you say they were black and who do you think their speech more closely resembles? Mine or yours"? Be yourself people and love those around you, even when they don't love you, if what you're doing isn't harming anyone or taking their way of life from them DON'T give into the "culture" that you were thrust into if it's harmful to your self and your values.

Since I wasn’t raised in a area people would call a hood, like other music that’s not rap, not like overpriced shoes like Jordans or like certain dishes and if I talk clear it’s not black apparently, like I’m suppose to say something a certain way due to my skin color. My skin color do not determine my character (personality, background, interest, knowledge, etc) only my features. We are not some monolith. Then they have the nerve to say I’m faking or code switching like I’ve never knew what that was till college. Like why would I want to fake and not be myself.

What it is ? Is he grew up around whites adopted their style and then when he came around black people there wasn't any connection because he wasn't raised around them and didnt conduct himself to the culture they're familiar with which left him out of the circle and labeled him to be different and will lead you to be a target to be victim of bullying. Then whites being who their known to be didn't accept him either because whites don't like black people, and they truly don't like a black person who may attempt due to certain unfortunate circumstances passes themselves off as white or take on white personal characteristics. It's sad but it isn't his fault there's millions of cases like these and it all stems from the parents self hatred which leads to the children suffering for it socially within a cruel society like this one. I advocate race division, we all should be around our own.

  • @310bound

that's the reality for young black men. Anything outside the norm will get you stigmatized.
Me being from the Bay(Richmond) and being actual N.W.A fan & having avidly listened to Ruthless Records entire catalog(solo work, features, D.O.C, J.J Fad, Above the Law) since 7th grade, I was always treated with standoffish-ness.
I wasn't necessarily an outcast, but I wasn't gettin' all the breezies neither. I bump Too $hort, Mac Dre, Mistah Fab's greater catalog & get treated like a weirdo for not being exclusively into party music.
Everyone has always thought I was from LA cuz I opt for slim fit Dickies & nikes canvas shoes over distressed Jean's & Jordan's.
It's frustrating that white dudes are afforded freedom of character/expression, yet Black men's personalities are constantly boxed in by fucked up platitudes.

  • @Beauweir

I think he still sounds Afro American black.
I'm speaking as a black British man, now.
The emphasis on different vowels in a word is what helps to still distinguish it.
When he said the word 'disowned' dis-OWNED me is coded as black to me.
A white person of American nationality would have each vowel of equal emphasis as the standard accent with Southern accents having a different sound again, such as: "dis-OwenED" me. So the second syllable has almost another letter sandwiched between, that of the additional "e".

Black slang pisses me off. When most black rappers get interviewed they don't fucking say anything. It's maddening. A bunch of broken English and slang and nothingness. That's something I respect about Tupac. He was so articulate and could speak so intelligently and actually fucking say something. Black rappers go out of their way to sound dumb as fuck. Just "woopty-woo" and "doin' my thang, you know what I'm sayin'?" I have nothing against African americans, I'm not racist at all; this just fucking bugs me so much. Why the fuck would anybody want to listen to anything you have to say, whether in a song or an interview, if you're just trying more so to be "cool" and perpetuate negative stereotypes? I'm not a Hopsin fan, but I respect that this guy can be articulate and intelligent. Intelligence is not a white thing, it's a human thing. If you choose to be that way. I personally like to learn things and be able to speak on a multitude of topics. I feel like I can be included in more discussions and conversations with more people and contribute my own perspectives and ideas, etc. In summary, it's not the 90's and Death Row is long dead. Please stop with this gangster street slang and broaden and enrich your vocabulary.
