The thing about Bottom is, you think one scene is the best thing ever made and then you watch another and change your mind. Its timeless stuff. My favourite comedy of all time and I just never get fed up of it. (Dring) Hrrrh. (Dring, dring) Hrrrrrh
I always thought this episode was the most poignant one of them all. Richie's desperation and frustration with life really comes through and you ALMOST start to feel sorry for him. Eddie has already given up on life, but you get the idea that Richie still has a tiny sliver of hope left that things can get better, but that hope is rapidly disappearing.
That’s not surprising because though it wasn’t the first screened on telly it was nevertheless the first episode they filmed. Sort of an internal BBC pilot, and Rik and Ade had only recently been greatly fascinated by Beckett’s _Waiting for Godot,_ which this script was intended to be their kind of comedic riff on.
I´ve seen every bottom episode about a thousand times, and it never ever gets boring. I love when richie talks to himself, especially when he, and eddie are trapped in a ferris wheel, thats the funniest monologue ever if you ask me : ))
He's probably used to Richie's insane ramblings and learned to block it out. Much like me when the mother-in-law is talking at me, or my boss asks if I wanna do overtime.
I love Rik Mayall, every thing he creates is like magic to me. I've been lucky enough to witness him live twice, one aged twelve and the other aged nineteen. Each time he had me pissing my pants. From childhood to middle age this guy has had me in stitches and I know his work will continue to do so until I'm deader than a can of spam.
Fun fact: This episode (Contest) was actually recorded in 1989 (2 years before the show actually started) as the pilot episode, and then just stuck in the middle of Series 1.
Thanks for the info. I always got the feeling that this was the pilot and was recorded a fair bit earlier than the rest of the series - they look different/younger and the tragi-comic tone is slightly different to the rest of the series. Interesting to learn that it was shot in the 80s and a full 2 years before the actual show.
Such a shame about Rik, he was such a freaking hilarious guy! I love how he manages to be so deadpan, yet also completely absurd at the same time :D He also has a really emotive way of dropping sudden pangs of emotion into his characters, like the scene suddenly turns really sad for a moment with one line delivery, and you actually feel sorry for this ridiculous character.
"I'm more, sort of, Elizabethan, you know ..... 13th century, Shakespeare, French Revolution, all that" Love how Richie just lumps 600 years of history together 😂
That's just what I love about their relationship. Eddie couldn't care less and seeks out a sad form of oblivion. Richie wants something so much more but finds a depressing comfort in Eddie's version of oblivion.

Fantastic analysis.

Love this scene. What an amazing guy, truly missed ❤️
Goodbye Rik. Thank you so much for the fun and the laughter. One of the best.
i love the way eddie looks so pissed off and bored with his hands on his ears while richie is talking to himself on the phone.
Acting within acting. How meta.
Can you do better?
