The old dc has some fantastic shooters on it and most are relatively cheap compared to the top tier saturn and md ones. Currently working on a pce list and a megadrive list. But as you know, they take so long to put together. Even with my limited editing skills
Surely I must have watched this when you first uploaded it, but I don't see a comment. Great video. I was shocked at the treatment Gigawing 2 received, but as you say, it's your list. I think my favorite is still Mars Matrix. The replay value and the manageable mayhem that it brings just make me want to keep coming back to it. But Zero Gunner is good fun as well.

First time watching this channel so did not expect that final choice, but nice one! Been playing it on Switch and it's awesome. Love the big bag of cocaine, jug of red bull and some ecstasy comment, by the way. Delivered like that's just a regular Friday night thing to do. Only on a Scottish shmup channel.
What a cracking video mark !!! a quality production no question, i can see that you have taken some insperation from someone that we are both subbed to :-) i agree with your top 3 aswell mate, spot on !! for me though i would have border down at no.1, but thats just me, i just prefer the way it plays compared to zero gunner 2 but both games are must haves for any dreamcast owning shmup fan !! theres a few here i still need to pick up myself, karous being at the top of my dreamcast shmup want list. Wow that is quite a honour mate getting it in the favourites list. I really appreciate the kind words. I wouldn't say I was so much inspired by Matt but blatantly ripped him off hahaha but imitation is the highest form of flattery. I have a few plans to do a pal ps2 list, megadrive and pce hucard list before the end of the year. This vid did take a while to make but I am quite pleased with it. I would love it if people could visit my channel and be inspired to pick up and play many shooters. Since it seems to be quite a niche genre that we love. Cracking video mate , really hope you do one of these for the Saturn and PC Engine too :) , have to put my hands up and say I've put very little time into the Dream cast shooters but will be resolving that over this year

But it's taken me 4 and a half years to make this vid, so don't pencil it into your diary just yet ;-) The dreamcast is definitely a top tier system for shooters and most games can be had for the 50quid range. Which is nice
great video Mark, very well put together also, alot of these ive played except the NGdev team games, my pick of the bunch was actually after your top 25, rainbow cotton i love that game and the series, nice descriptions on the games too, with a little bit of humour in there also, yes i noticed ;)

Thanks for the comment friend. I am pretty happy with my shooter collection as a whole. I have most of the games I want now for all of the systems. I haven't played the ps2 version of so I'm not sure the difference. All of the vertical games have a tate option on the dc which is great. The only one that doesn't is Chaos field as that is meant to be played in wide-screen. Thanks a lot for watching :-)
Great video - it was nice to see all the fun shooters on the Dreamcast. Zero Gunner 2 definitely deserves its place at the top, as it's a really nice game in every area. When it comes to Sturmwind, I find myself coming back to it, as I like the level and boss designs. Let's hope people make more and more shooters for the good 'ol Dreamcast.
I have quite a few DC shooters - and the arcade stick to make the most of them. I will watch your review of Ghost Blade. I've read mixed opinions on it, so it'll be interesting to hear why you were disappointed with it. Cheers!
Cheers Rob. It was a surprisingly time consuming process. I don't know how shows like gamesack can do a 30min show evey week or two haha I should invest in a microphone I think tho as the volume is very low during some of it. Thanks for watching mate
I like it when people put time into videos for the Dreamcast, as I think it needs more recognition because I honestly think if Sega didn't mess up so badly with it, it could have given the PS2 a run for its money :) Look forward to seeing other videos like this from you!

Great list, definitely some excellent shooters to look out for on the Dreamcast, may start looking at getting some of them a bit later in the year, once I have gotten a few PC Engine CD-Rom games out of the way.

Galaga and Twinbee introduced me to this Great Genre of Games so I'll definitely check these games out since the Sega Dreamcast is my Favorite Console of All Time since I was 7 years old when it first came out in North America

I would personally start with Gunbird 2 friend. It has many difficulty options and has a simple scoring system. It is also still one of cheapest games on this list. Thanks for watching
Cheers Shaun. Yeah last hope is quite poor. When you compare it to other shooters with similar play styles like pulstar. It's like night and day. Hoping to do a ps2 pal list next as I just need dragon blaze to finish that collection. Also I would love to do a ps1 and pce list.

Y'know, I recently picked up a Dreamcast and a craving for shmups. Every time I end up looking for games to add into my cart I always reference this video. I still can't stop coming back to this. Very nice ordering, too. Though I wonder, now that some new shooters came out after this list's release, what are your opinions on Ghost Blade, Battle Crust, and/or Gun Lord if you've played them, and where would they be in this list? Btw, my number 1 is tied between Mars Matrix and Border Down. Great designs with equally satisfying scoring systems.
Great video man! TH-camrs either talk about a game, play a game, or show you that they own the game, not all 3!! Also, we have similar taste. Zero Gunner 2 and under defeat are both fantastic, and better than Ikaruga imo! I also love giga wing.
Put a helicopter game above Ikaruga... The whole point of it is to play those early levels until you master them and don't get hit. They put an easy mode on the game cube port i believe.

Thanks mate. Unfortunately most of the shooters are expensive compared to other dc games. However in the grand scale of shooters, they are quite cheap compared to many other systems. Appreciate you watching :-)
Great video Mark - somehow I missed this last week :( I have only played the PS3 version of Under Defeat - I didn't like it although that may just be playing it HD on the PS3 - lol I didn't like original GigaWing - like Strikers 1945 it felt like a demo and levels are too short for me. I heard the second one [GigaWing2] is just as short as the first but made from polys with upgraded graphics - is it any good? Would really like both BorderDown & ZeroGunner2 as they both look fantastic and look playable... but they are both so pricey! :( , especially BorderDown, and I'll not even consider dropping £100 on any game these days regardless new or old. Actually... going off on a tangent... the other two latest gen consoles (PS4/XBone) also need to hit a sub £200 price point (with a game thrown in) in order to peak my interest in either of them - lol :-)
Cheers mate. I was pretty happy with the way it turned out but it took forever with my limited editing skills lol Zero gunner and borderdown are two great games. But I can see why you wouldn't spend big money on games nowadays. Especially with the dc since piracy is so easy. Gigawing 2 isn't the best and although it is one of the cheaper shooters, its not really worth picking up. Gunbird 2 is a much better choice. I am hoping to do a pal ps2 list, megadrive and pce list. markhorsburgh Thanks for the response :) Ha Ha for me price has nothing to do with the DC'c piracy issue, its just such a lot of money to drop for any game - let alone possibly a second hand game. My days of spending over £100 a game - like I did for some AES games in the 90's. That crazy time has happily now long passed, but I still have some really good memories of import gaming back then though even though the AES has long gone :D Piracy on DC oh thats a whole shitstorm lol. See imo Sega failed with the DC because they should have made a better attempt at enforcing tougher anti-theft measures in the hardware, a shame because imo it was really the ease of piracy that finally killed off the DC. So, as a matter of principle (even if it was the only way to play these rarer games) I would have to pass.I don't have any access to any pirated software or flash carts & I stopped using MAME many many years ago. For me with piracy its a principle thing - regardless of the games age - its just not fair. I strongly believe piracy just devalues the original item. Like playing games on MAME they just feel somehow empty - like fake and worthless, but each to their own, its just not for me - I just dont want to play 'knock-offs' :-)
The Kaylied Gamer Interesting view's mate. I agree with the piracy killing the dreamcast. Sad times indeed. I had a friend who copied ps1 games and I used to buy them for a fiver. But even back then I remember feeling pretty empty about playing them and I only ever played them for short periods of time. But I bought Tony hawk 1 for full price and I must have put 40plus hours into that. Didn't really buy any pirates after that. I started downloading dc games around 7 years ago when I bought a dc back again. But then I saw a dreamcast game for sale in a shop and the feeling of buying an original game came flooding back to me haha
markhorsburgh Yes, to me when it comes to gaming the feeling you get when playing an original disc or cart / card is unbeatable imo - and it just makes the experience feel complete. Thanks for understanding :-)
Personally I agree Border down and Under Defeat are better than Ikaruga, which is a good game,but I would have had Psyvariar 2; the will to fabricate much higher up the list (3 or 4 at least!), although it does take a bit of time to learn the mechanics.

hello man, i live in Brazil and my english might not be the best but i guess you could help me find out the name of a game shoot em up. so the game not happen in the air but on the ground, its a car or war tank or other vihicle that i cant remember; i think that one of them are green and the other yellow but i was a kid so my memory can be wrong about the colors; i played with a friend that i do not have contact anymore; so do you know any shoot em up games that is not a plane or a spaceship that you control? i know thar wasn´t from SNES, but can be anyother console... i played between 1994 and 2001; it´s all i can say!
Great list man. I've been watching this a lot to get inspiration for developing a shmup. I like the diversity here with all these shmups from the bare bones basic and the visually stunning traditional bullet hells.

If I'm honest I wanted bangai o a little higher but I couldn't be arsed to re edit all the video haha But to be fair, if all these games had a score out of ten. Then bangai would still be a 9 and all the rest would get a 9 too. So there all so great, it was hard separating them.
I suppose the title is a little misleading as these are all the shooting games available for the dreamcast. So they are ranked from worst to best. So the bad games are going to be featured. However it's only really last hope and gigawing 2 that are below par compared to the rest. Thanks for watching
Don't Armada or Cannon Spike count? Um shouldn't Ikaruga be in there and at number 1? I think yes (then Bangai-o). Is this list just the games you actually own...?
In my eyes Armada and Cannon spike aren't traditional shoot em ups. I debated about putting Bangai o in as it doesn't force scroll you. But it just made it in. It is a great game but that is why it is further down the list. This was a list of all traditional shmups. The list would be huge if i had to include all rail shooters too. Also I think Ikaruga is over rated. It is still a great game like i said but doesn't have the pick up and play fun factor of Zero gunner2 IMO.
Oh your just being fancy to miss that out. It's the only 'traditional' shoot-em-up I can be bothered with on the DC. I find the genre so starved of ideas, the red and blue system blew my mind when I saw it for the first time even though it turns out that's not unique to this game, I think Ikaruga has the best presentation on the system.
TONYskittlezzz It is a nice looking game. You can get that plus 4 other games on a single disc for the wii. It's called the shooting collection and is very cheap. Well worth it mate
TONYskittlezzz There is a way to connect to a hd tv. Get a "DC VGA BOX" from eBay and "tendak VGA to HDMI cable adapter". You can get them from eBay or amazon. just plug 'em together with an HDMI cable and you are set for VGA quality dramcast gaming! It's what I use and it works.
Can anyone help, I'm trying to find the name of an old SHMUP where all the bosses were mechanized fish. I played it on my cousin's dreamcast, but the title was in japanese.
That would be Darius mate. The series has loads of games. But the most popular for Darius Gaiden. It unfortunately never came out for the dreamcast but for the PlayStation. 👍
These games are expensive sega is unfortunately dead (rip) so I don't see a problem getting the isos. They're floating online and you can burn dc games on cd-r without modding your dc. I do it all the time I gotta get my ikaruga fix 😁 but thunder force iv on the genz is my #1 its got a soft spot on me.
Shikigami is a series I haven't played in years now. I don't know why as they are all really great shooters. I think it is ripe for a new release. I would kill to have those games on Switch!! Especially since the 3rd game is really hard to get your hands on lol. Yeah it is indeed mate. But at least it's cheaper than the aes version :-) I have never seen it sell in an auction to be honest. Only bin that are ridiculous. Are you needing it because you are going for a full set or just because you want it? Would you consider andros dunos part of the full set?
All of these games are horribly expensive, I don't want to pay over $100 dollars for a game unless I have a large nostalgia factor for the game, but I never owned a dreamcast
Ikaruga = definitely most overrate shmup in history of mankind. Zero Gunner 2 comes a very close second (I have played arcade, DC, and own the switch version, with Ikaruga I own GC and switch versions, have played DC as well).

I have played the arcade one on mame, not a real arcade.. but dreamcast was on a real dreamcast. My dreamcast. I re bought the switch one cause i thought after 10 years i should try it again to see if i liked it.. i don't.. even on the hardest difficulty i completed it 3rd play through, and the crosshair turning mechanics are terrible. I would love to know what is so wrong with the switch version? Can anyone actually quantify that? The controls are the same as the arcade one on mame, and there is no slowdown or any issues.. Is it the lack of extra features? The core game is the same. It was 10 australian dollars, not over 200 like what I got for the dreamcast. Grow up and don't attack someone personally cause you disagree with them. I was giving my opinion on a game, not on anyone personally.. but I will now.. you are a major tool.
Nop, psyvariar 2 the will to fabricate should have been much further up, and ikaruga dosn't stand up to the hype, it can get unfarely frustrating and even boring to play.ikaruga. Under Defeat is very good though! Wouldn't have picked the same No 1game. No REZ, are you one of those "RES isn't a SHMUP" people then?
Nice to hear your thoughts. Also nice to see people are still watching this video 7 years later. I agree Ikuraga is overrated nowadays. I still stand by my choice of Zero gunner 2. Great game and one I still play to this day. I never really gelled with the Psyvariar games. I liked the grazing mechanic but I felt the levels didn't really have the wow factor for me. I don't count Rez a shmup. Same as Afterburner and Space Harrier. I think they are enough games to enjoy in that genre without including them. Rez is a great game and the best version is the one you get for VR. Truly a surreal experience

When it comes to Sturmwind, I find myself coming back to it, as I like the level and boss designs. Let's hope people make more and more shooters for the good 'ol Dreamcast.

I like it when people put time into videos for the Dreamcast, as I think it needs more recognition because I honestly think if Sega didn't mess up so badly with it, it could have given the PS2 a run for its money :)

Great list, definitely some excellent shooters to look out for on the Dreamcast, may start looking at getting some of them a bit later in the year, once I have gotten a few PC Engine CD-Rom games out of the way.

I would personally start with Gunbird 2 friend. It has many difficulty options and has a simple scoring system. It is also still one of cheapest games on this list.

Y'know, I recently picked up a Dreamcast and a craving for shmups. Every time I end up looking for games to add into my cart I always reference this video.

Btw, my number 1 is tied between Mars Matrix and Border Down. Great designs with equally satisfying scoring systems.

Put a helicopter game above Ikaruga... The whole point of it is to play those early levels until you master them and don't get hit. They put an easy mode on the game cube port i believe.

Thanks mate. Unfortunately most of the shooters are expensive compared to other dc games. However in the grand scale of shooters, they are quite cheap compared to many other systems.

I have only played the PS3 version of Under Defeat - I didn't like it although that may just be playing it HD on the PS3 - lol
I didn't like original GigaWing - like Strikers 1945 it felt like a demo and levels are too short for me.
I heard the second one [GigaWing2] is just as short as the first but made from polys with upgraded graphics - is it any good?
Would really like both BorderDown & ZeroGunner2 as they both look fantastic and look playable... but they are both so pricey! :( , especially BorderDown, and I'll not even consider dropping £100 on any game these days regardless new or old.
Actually... going off on a tangent... the other two latest gen consoles (PS4/XBone) also need to hit a sub £200 price point (with a game thrown in) in order to peak my interest in either of them - lol :-)

Zero gunner and borderdown are two great games. But I can see why you wouldn't spend big money on games nowadays. Especially with the dc since piracy is so easy.
Gigawing 2 isn't the best and although it is one of the cheaper shooters, its not really worth picking up. Gunbird 2 is a much better choice.
I am hoping to do a pal ps2 list, megadrive and pce list. Just finding the time.

Ha Ha for me price has nothing to do with the DC'c piracy issue, its just such a lot of money to drop for any game - let alone possibly a second hand game. My days of spending over £100 a game - like I did for some AES games in the 90's. That crazy time has happily now long passed, but I still have some really good memories of import gaming back then though even though the AES has long gone :D
Piracy on DC oh thats a whole shitstorm lol. See imo Sega failed with the DC because they should have made a better attempt at enforcing tougher anti-theft measures in the hardware, a shame because imo it was really the ease of piracy that finally killed off the DC. So, as a matter of principle (even if it was the only way to play these rarer games) I would have to pass.I don't have any access to any pirated software or flash carts & I stopped using MAME many many years ago.
For me with piracy its a principle thing - regardless of the games age - its just not fair.
I strongly believe piracy just devalues the original item. Like playing games on MAME they just feel somehow empty - like fake and worthless, but each to their own, its just not for me - I just dont want to play 'knock-offs' :-)

I had a friend who copied ps1 games and I used to buy them for a fiver. But even back then I remember feeling pretty empty about playing them and I only ever played them for short periods of time. But I bought Tony hawk 1 for full price and I must have put 40plus hours into that. Didn't really buy any pirates after that.
I started downloading dc games around 7 years ago when I bought a dc back again. But then I saw a dreamcast game for sale in a shop and the feeling of buying an original game came flooding back to me haha
markhorsburgh Yes, to me when it comes to gaming the feeling you get when playing an original disc or cart / card is unbeatable imo - and it just makes the experience feel complete. Thanks for understanding :-)
Personally I agree Border down and Under Defeat are better than Ikaruga, which is a good game,but I would have had Psyvariar 2; the will to fabricate much higher up the list (3 or 4 at least!), although it does take a bit of time to learn the mechanics.

hello man, i live in Brazil and my english might not be the best but i guess you could help me find out the name of a game shoot em up. so the game not happen in the air but on the ground, its a car or war tank or other vihicle that i cant remember; i think that one of them are green and the other yellow but i was a kid so my memory can be wrong about the colors; i played with a friend that i do not have contact anymore; so do you know any shoot em up games that is not a plane or a spaceship that you control? i know thar wasn´t from SNES, but can be anyother console... i played between 1994 and 2001; it´s all i can say!

Great list man. I've been watching this a lot to get inspiration for developing a shmup. I like the diversity here with all these shmups from the bare bones basic and the visually stunning traditional bullet hells.

But to be fair, if all these games had a score out of ten. Then bangai would still be a 9 and all the rest would get a 9 too. So there all so great, it was hard separating them.
FYI a lot of these games can't be picked up on other systems, which might be the cheaper option.

You say these games are boring and not so good. But they make it on your top 25. I don't think a top list should have any bad games on it
I suppose the title is a little misleading as these are all the shooting games available for the dreamcast. So they are ranked from worst to best. So the bad games are going to be featured. However it's only really last hope and gigawing 2 that are below par compared to the rest.

Don't Armada or Cannon Spike count? Um shouldn't Ikaruga be in there and at number 1? I think yes (then Bangai-o). Is this list just the games you actually own...?
In my eyes Armada and Cannon spike aren't traditional shoot em ups. I debated about putting Bangai o in as it doesn't force scroll you. But it just made it in. It is a great game but that is why it is further down the list.
This was a list of all traditional shmups. The list would be huge if i had to include all rail shooters too.
Also I think Ikaruga is over rated. It is still a great game like i said but doesn't have the pick up and play fun factor of Zero gunner2 IMO.
Oh your just being fancy to miss that out. It's the only 'traditional' shoot-em-up I can be bothered with on the DC. I find the genre so starved of ideas, the red and blue system blew my mind when I saw it for the first time even though it turns out that's not unique to this game, I think Ikaruga has the best presentation on the system.

TONYskittlezzz There is a way to connect to a hd tv. Get a "DC VGA BOX" from eBay and "tendak VGA to HDMI cable adapter". You can get them from eBay or amazon. just plug 'em together with an HDMI cable and you are set for VGA quality dramcast gaming! It's what I use and it works.
Can anyone help, I'm trying to find the name of an old SHMUP where all the bosses were mechanized fish. I played it on my cousin's dreamcast, but the title was in japanese.
That would be Darius mate. The series has loads of games. But the most popular for Darius Gaiden. It unfortunately never came out for the dreamcast but for the PlayStation.

These games are expensive sega is unfortunately dead (rip) so I don't see a problem getting the isos. They're floating online and you can burn dc games on cd-r without modding your dc. I do it all the time I gotta get my ikaruga fix 😁 but thunder force iv on the genz is my #1 its got a soft spot on me.

I would kill to have those games on Switch!! Especially since the 3rd game is really hard to get your hands on lol. Ikaruga = definitely most overrate shmup in history of mankind. Zero Gunner 2 comes a very close second (I have played arcade, DC, and own the switch version, with Ikaruga I own GC and switch versions, have played DC as well).
Zero Gunner 2 Minus on Switch is a subpar port. Still good, but it's much better on DC. If you think it's overrated you have a very bad taste.

I have played the arcade one on mame, not a real arcade.. but dreamcast was on a real dreamcast. My dreamcast. I re bought the switch one cause i thought after 10 years i should try it again to see if i liked it.. i don't.. even on the hardest difficulty i completed it 3rd play through, and the crosshair turning mechanics are terrible. I would love to know what is so wrong with the switch version? Can anyone actually quantify that? The controls are the same as the arcade one on mame, and there is no slowdown or any issues.. Is it the lack of extra features? The core game is the same. It was 10 australian dollars, not over 200 like what I got for the dreamcast. Grow up and don't attack someone personally cause you disagree with them. I was giving my opinion on a game, not on anyone personally.. but I will now.. you are a major tool.

I still stand by my choice of Zero gunner 2. Great game and one I still play to this day.
I never really gelled with the Psyvariar games. I liked the grazing mechanic but I felt the levels didn't really have the wow factor for me.
I don't count Rez a shmup. Same as Afterburner and Space Harrier. I think they are enough games to enjoy in that genre without including them.
Rez is a great game and the best version is the one you get for VR. Truly a surreal experience
