Whenever Blazing Saddles comes up, someone is quick to mention how it could never be made today. Now whether or not that's true, one thing is certain, even back in 1974, it was barely made at all.
Join me in exploring about the difficulties Blazing Saddle had in getting made and the lengths Mel Brooks had to go through, or not listen to, in order to create his vision.

Mel Brooks movies are masterclasses in "punching in the right direction" with comedy and satire. What is on it's face offensive/racial humor is aimed at laughing *at* and ridiculing racists. Just like you're laughing at Hitler in "Springtime for Hitler" in The Producers. No matter how vulgar the joke, Brooks doesn't punch down.

There are far too many lines or scenes to select just one...but one have I seen used over and over again is the dance number towards the end and the great Dom DeLuise as the director calmly walking up to the dancer that made the mistake, raising his megaphone, and screaming *WRONG!!!* That cracks me up just writing this! 🤣

I remember seeing Blazing Saddles on network television where it had been edited and the scene where they are sitting around the campfire was still there, but instead of fart and belch noises it was the sound of horses neighing. It made no sense. (Funny that network censors were shocked by a normal bodily function that we all do, but things like people getting shot in the chest are perfectly fine and typically left in.) When I saw this originally in the theater, I went to see it with my black friend Leon. Neither one of us had seen it yet. When the first N-bomb was dropped I tensed up, waiting to see what Leon's reaction was going to be. He totally got it. *No one in that theater laughed harder or louder than us two.*
Anyway, there's a scene that I heard about that got cut (or actually a piece of a scene got cut) that would have been absolutely hilarious: When Lili Von Shtupp is trying to seduce Sheriff Bart, after she says, "Is it twoo what they say about your people? Oh, it's twoo! It's twoo!" there's some silence and then Bart says "You're sucking on my arm". Mel Brooks said that the WB censors just were not willing to keep that in there. How funny!
p.s. Did you know there was a Blazing Saddles TV show? It didn't get very far (because it's terrible): Here's the pilot episode: (Louis Gossett Jr. plays Sheriff Bart) th-cam.com/video/e4ywpyIRVH8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7smp-vqEHtB220cW

I first saw BS (ooh! Just noticed that Brooksian built-in joke) on late-night TV in New York City, near the end of the 1970s. (I got asthma, I laughed so hard.)
I then made a solemn vow to rewatch it wherever, whenever I could--which meant that, for a few decades, I only saw it on TV. (I didn't see the full, unexpurgated film until I was a gently decaying adult!)
Here's what's interesting: the first time I saw it, in the seventies, ALL of the suggestive/rude words or terms were bleeped (or neighed) out, but every single racial slur was left in.
By the time I last saw it on TV, almost three decades later, almost every single one of the "crude" lines were left as written--but all of the racial slurs were edited out. (This film is the only example of using slurs where I actually REGRET them being removed.)
So, apart from its remarkably deep in-movie message, BS continues to be a shining social lesson just in its broadcast history!

Everyone gets that. What a lot of social warriors don't get is no one is actually offended because the movie drops some Nbombs because most people understand context. It's the bad guys and townfolk morons who are racist. The townfolk morons learn to be accepting of everyone no matter their racial or ethnic background and the bad guys lose. The social warriors also don't get how chocked full of woke themes the movies actually is - they think it's edgy and "offensive" and making people angry because of the Nbombs. They got it all wrong.

@@jkorshak Nah I met the social warriors. They was like we wanna fight ya, but na we chilling. The social warriors guna play some golf next week if you want in? Public course though and you’re clearly country club…

@@agin1519 The social warriors are pissed off people don't laugh at the jokes their parents and grandparents laughed at. So, when they see a movie with an nbomb they kneejerk how people must be trying to cancel the picture - because the social warriors are too dumb for context. Golf is all well and good - great sport when played at a high level - painful when duffers play, though they usually benefit from the exercise and a lot of them seem to need it. Never had an interest in playing.

This was my first R-rated movie. There was a mixed audience--white, black, etc. Everyone was rolling with laughter. I think this movie should be required watching for today's woke generation. Comedy was real back then.

@@MargarinetaylorgreaseIsn't Blazing Saddles itself pretty woke? Most of the jokes I've seen are at the racists' expense. Like that one scene where the black character says, "Hey where the white women at," is exploiting the KKK's fears to fool them.

It's so bizarre to me when people pull out the line, "You couldn't make Blazing Saddles today", usually from a conservative who is complaining about 'the PC police'. Fact is, there's really only one scene that doesn't age well (the French Mistake scene, where the joke is basically, 'everyone in Hollywood is gay', wouldn't really work for today's audiences). Everything else would land perfectly now just like it did then (and maybe moreso).

The only bad writing of this movie was that the toll was $0.10 instead of $0.05.
Because the word “dime” isn’t as funny as the word “nickel.”
Imagine if Gary Larson had replaced every “weasel” with “mouse” or “rat.”

I beg to differ. The way Pickens ends his demand by drawling out "diiimez" wouldn't work with the harsher sounding nickles.
