Using a spreadsheet to chart stranded knitting patterns

  • I spent a long time looking for a coloured knitting program and tried a few and found them pretty slow to use, so I've put together a video on how to set up conditional formatting in google sheets (or any spreadsheet software) to plan out coloured knitting charts! I hope it might be helpful & useful for some people.
It's not always neccesary to have to chart out pattern and colour but for this particular project I'm working on I found it important because
    a) I don't get a lot of time to knit so when I do I want to make sure I don't have to frog it because I chose the wrong colour
    b) I have limited amounts of some of the colours and I wanted to make sure I balanced the design so they didn't run out
    c) I wanted to make sure the colours harmonised and balanced out across the whole hat to make it coherant and beautiful!
    d) I wanted to mix in some custom designs- the cows, my dog and the chickens
The video goes through how to
set up the spreadsheet into a knitting chart
    set your conditional formatting rules
choose custom colours for your chart
change pattern colours quickly and easily
change the colour of specific areas of patterns after you have inputted them
copy your repeat across the whole chart in about 3 seconds - no copy and paste!
duplicate the file so you can save a colourway and start working on another one instantly
For some fantastic fair isle patterns to use please consider joining the Fair Isle Fisherman's Kep facebook page and purchasing Anne Sinclair's kep pattern. All proceeds from pattern sales go to the Fair Isle museum. I am a complete novice at knitting but I am now addicted, and the group is extremely friendly and supportive! There are loads of beautiful fair isle motifs to follow and use when you are charting and combining those with this tutorial you can come up a design for a stunning and unique fisherman's kep in half an hour!

What a great tutorial! I’ve sat, with my colored pencils, for HOURS making charts. I would always find mistakes and have to start over. Everybody know you really can’t erase a colored pencil 🙄
I’m about to start a new project with stranded work. I sooo glad I now have an easier, and faster, way to get it done!
    Thank you

This is wonderful! I don’t think about using Google sheets because I’m more proficient in Excel and used conditional formatting a lot in my former job. That being said, I like to use my iPad Pro. I tried with Adobe Illustrator, but it ended up being cumbersome, then I tried Procreate, which is much better because I could create a grid and use that I as a reference layer to fill in colors. But this is so much faster! Plus, I can still import the final design to Procreate because I’ve found that to be a good place to show where I am in my knitting by creating a transparent box that covers up a row as I finish. Hope this rambling made some sense. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful tip ❤

So helpful and so much fun. I used to be a whiz at Excel, but had forgotten some of the coding tricks since being retired for a few years. I will be spending some creative time on Google sheets. Thank you for sharing your skills.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I've been playing with colour combinations all evening. One thing I did notice was that if I set the font to size 1px after I've finished with the colour changes then it's pretty much invisible, but can be made bigger again if I want to experiment more

I've never sold a pattern and wouldn't know how to set that up but you can view the google spreadsheet here if that helps at all! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1I4zDdiM2y6dT8aZdWHFOY129kIlERLW18kyVPp8i_nQ/edit?usp=sharing
I just use each cell as a stitch and work right to left, bottom to top, carrying floats every 6 stitches and appliqueing the red for the chickens on after it's finished. The cows from left to right are Gunna, Darroch, Una, Tom, Gerhilda and Starry, our Shetland cows, which is why they each have different markings! The conditional formatting makes it easy to chart out your own patterns too, I started with just black and white then added colours from there.

Could you explain how to print the final result with all the cases ?

    • @corrymeadow7061
      @corrymeadow7061  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes - select the area you want to print by clicking in the top left corner of the pattern then holding down shift and clicking in the bottom right corner.
Go to File (top left of screen) then Print (or press ctrl+P).
Top right of the print screen, change the drop down to "selected cells"
Change page orientation to portrait and scale to "fit to page"
Once you click 'next' Google Sheets will download a .pdf which you can then print as a normal file.
      Hope that helps
