    I don't think that eyeshadow is dead. I think that over consumerism is declining. Brands and customers were swept up in a cycle of constantly releasing/buying new palettes for a few years and now everyone's kinda coming out of the haze going, "We don't really need all that."

    And also this"old lady"thing I've been hearing in the community that is phrased as if being an old lady is a bad thing🙄when is this agism going to stop? Why are we making women feel like they have to do anything and everything to remain looking 20 forever? And shaming them for simply being humans and Age? We all know what the alternative to aging is! Let people embrace their Age and their journy in life

      Styling yourself like an old lady is not good if you are young. It's okay that there are noted differences between the generations. I would not want my young daughters to dress like they are middle aged, or like they are old ladies. It's okay both to be an old lady AND to not want to dress like one if you're not one. Let the young people avoid dressing like old people, and let them say it out loud that they don't want to be "old lady." Let the old ladies be old and the young ladies be young! I do not want to dress or decorate or smell "old lady" but I love that old ladies do. It's okay for the young ladies to resist being too "old lady" for their age and it's okay for the old ladies to be happy to be "old lady" now. Pretending like there are no differences does not help! Accept that there are generally differences between the generations, and please let go of the anger. Just because someone doesn't want to be "old lady" when they are young does not mean they are shaming the old ladies.

      @@afooraamoora5611 the demographic many marketers are looking for is 18-34. This age group is just the most willing to jump and buy something new a high percentage of the times they see something. It's less an age judgment and more of going where the money is. Yes, the next age group up has more money, but they are choosier about how they spend it.

And the young ones are wasting the best most fun years of their life being boring!!😂😂

  • @sharlesb7735
    @sharlesb7735 หลายเดือนก่อน +85

    I was always extremely conservative when buying palettes, because if you have a brown palette, how many browns do you need and can you really tell the difference. But when I started watching YT the last couple of years, I started to buy just for the heck of it, I will never be able to even make a dent in them and there are so many repeating colours, I certainly don't need anymore. With makeup in general, no one can ever tell what a person is wearing, so the whole thing we get caught up in is quite bazaar when you think about it.

    • @marmanes5198
      @marmanes5198 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Same here. I started watching YT tutorials and suddenly they went from “I’m using this product from this brand, but any similar dark brown will work” to “you NEED to buy this palette because it’s a holy grail”, and I went from owning a MAC quad with shadows that I had picked plus a couple of drugstore shadows to buying stuff that influencers advertised “just to see what the fuzz is about”. Problem was, I was buying at least a palette a month and I will never be able to use them up. And it still takes effort to rationalize why I don’t need a new one, regardless of how cute the color story is.

      @sharlesb7735 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@marmanes5198 lol, same here, I think I’m over it now. I went into Mecca and a chemist the other day and looked but said you don’t need it. The only thing I bought was glow watermelon drops to see what the hype is about, and I do like it. I smelt the sol de janiero but didn’t like them because the perfumes left a chemical smell on me and the cream didn’t smell that good. I’m in Australia so there isn’t that much variety or you have to travel a distance to the store.

    Jen, your hair is so beautiful!
    I am almost 80 and been retired from nursing for 24 years. I have always done simple looks: cleanse, moisturize, mascara, blush, lipstick.
    When 2020 happened, out of boredom started watching you-tube. I had never even heard of retinol! My eyeshadow consisted of a single blue shadow. (Never heard that if you had blue eyes you shouldn't wear blue shadow!)
    One day my 33 yo granddaughter took me to Ulta. Never heard of it! 😅 Looked around in amazement at all the pretties. I am also a quilter, so color and color theory have always been in my life. I spotted a 35 pan Morphe pallet with beautiful colors and it was MINE!❤ I didn’t even know what to do with it! I tried, watched more videos and looked like a clown, but still bought more large palletes bc the colors were so pretty! 4 years later and i still don't use all those pretty pallets. I have a neutral shadow stick i use if going out, but i usually stay home and wear my skincare. SMH
    Always enjoy your videos for your beauty, honest reviews, and education!
    Thank you, so much! ❤❤

      I agree. I have 12 eyeshadow palettes (most of them bought in 2017-2019) and I find myself overwhelmed with the amount. I do project panning and usage goals because otherwise I will forget to use all of them. I don't want to buy another palette because I know I'll just neglect it like I have my other ones, and I already own so many colours it wouldn't add much to my collection anyway. I love eyeshadow and use it everyday, but that doesn't mean I need to buy new ones all the time when the ones I own already work beautifully.

    Eyeshadow isn’t dying, how people are wearing eyeshadow is changing. The “barely there” or “natural” look is more popular than what was popular before the pandemic - ironically, when we couldn’t socialize and had to wear masks, so many people were wearing bright, colorful eyeshadow because they had to cover half their face but now a lot of makeup enthusiasts newer to the beauty world associate makeup with luxury because everything is getting more expensive and so many brands are owned by celebs and influencers that it’s become more about status than creativity. Also, for all us makeup enthusiasts who have been collecting for a hot minute, how much eyeshadow do we need? I don’t need to buy a palette from a fav brand every time it launches something, I’d rather invest in skincare and complexion than on eyeshadows because I have all the formulas and colors I like already.

      This is what I see. So many of the new releases are neutral looks, with slight changes, and it just isn't fun or exciting to buy most of them. Natasha Denona just released another 5 pan palette, and when I saw it, I couldn't see it being used much differently than her starlette 5 pan. Its not adventurous. It isn't creative, so we just need 1.

      It's just a trend that will pass in a few years. As Gen Z and Gen Alpha start dating and entering the workforce, they'll want a more sophisticated look, and eye shadow will come back. Although possibly not with looks consisting of 4 or 5 shades. It may be more like the early 90s with matte browns, taupes, and grays. Which, IMHO, is the most becoming look for most people. I definitely agree with what you are saying. I have noticed as a teacher and mother of two teen girls there is zero focus on eye shadow. My daughters and their friends wear really minimal makeup but seem to focus more on skincare and a good mascara and flush of color on the cheeks. My daughter NEVER wears eyeshadow and all her friends look very natural. I have noticed a somewhat unhealthy obsession with my younger students on high end skincare and I hear them talk about skincare they do NOT NEED. I keep telling these girls that they do NOT need these products that me, as a 45 yr old, uses for skin repair and anti-aging. I have been also loving how quickly I can get ready by doing a one and done look or just sweeping some bronzer and a little shimmer over it on the eye. I used to be diligent with eyeliner too. I haven’t even been wearing that. Maybe as fall approaches I will want a smoky eye but right now I am enjoying a minimal look too. My lips are thin so I am loving the glosses and lip oils as well.

There are only a handful eyeshadow palettes that seem to be unique and different from the others. Also, eyeshadow palettes are now becoming so expensive, like over $60, especially the indie ones (understandably). It has become a luxury expense for many of us who have other more pressing needs in life.

    I’ve also reduced the number of makeup channels I watch (Jen’s is my favorite to watch and support). I feel maybe others have as well. Many makeup channels just don’t seem as interesting anymore. Many TH-camrs get the same PR and all the videos of a particular PR’d palette will come out at once. It feels like a rat race to get videos posted. The content isn’t as interesting.
    I also see TH-camrs do declutters and say they don’t want a big collection anymore, but then they’ll buy again shortly after. I recently watched one person do several declutter videos a few weeks ago. She just posted a video about buying all her Sephora wishlist items this week. It’s the same type of videos that get created. In this economy, I think many people are purchasing less makeup compared to a few years ago.
    I miss the days when TH-camrs would purchase palettes on their own because they genuinely liked them. Some may wait for a sale and buy a palette down the road, making the normal person feel that it’s ok to not rush out to buy every new release. I like Jen’s videos because she does bring back older palettes to talk about and she’ll have interesting video ideas.

    To me, (my opinion) this Oden palette is a prime example of why eye shadow palettes are going by the wayside. When you can replace shadows with blushes, hi-liters and bronzers with a more natural tone, it’s a big win. Right now it’s like a crazy competition on what company can make the most outlandish color story for eye shadow palettes. If I buy a palette I want to be able to use most/all of the colors. Leaving 1/4-1/3 colors unused because they’re outlandish is a terrible waste to me. 😉

      Interesting observation. In the more mainstream non-indy side I think it’s the exact opposite. Everything looks the same over and over again - Natasha Denona just released a mini palette that looks almost exactly like my mini love palette, and is made up of colors I already have in the retro palette. When she released that gold one, I thought the post I was seeing was from a year or so ago as I was sure I owned that palette from her (not the original gold one either). Pat McGrath has done 9000 pink palettes in a row. I could not tell a new Tarte or Too Faced or Urban Decay palette apart from whatever they did a year, two, three years ago.
      I haven’t seen something different from drug store or Sephora in ages. But I’ve also been an over consumer so I can’t think of what would actually entice me at this point! It would have to be pretty specific to my exact preferences by a brand I really like.

    I work at Sephora (in CT!) and I can tell you that no one under probably 30, definitely under 25 is using eyeshadow palettes. They all want that Hailey Bieber style of makeup. If there is anything on the eyes, it's bronzer in the crease, possibly a gloss on the lid, and one coat of mascara. The next generation up, age 30-40 maybe, likes Patrick Ta and Makeup by Mario palettes, high quality neutral tones. The only people who are interested in eye shadow palettes are generally foreign, and they often want colorful palettes, which we really don't have anymore. My younger coworkers don't wear eyeshadow at all. Myself, I still have a HUGE palette collection, but I don't use them daily anymore. I am more likely to do a one or two shade look, and often this won't involve a palette. Even if it does though, I'm not doing multi shade looks like I used to. And I often get compliments on my makeup, but the shadow isn't obvious. It's generally smoked out and neutral. Yes, I do still use eyeshadow daily though. I'm an old lady.

    Personally I’m a big makeup fan, but I really don’t see many other people wearing it much. About all I see consistently is eyeliner, mascara and lipstick, sometimes foundation products. But really it seems very few people are into makeup these days, at least in my neck of the woods.
    I love how you do your makeup!❤

    Nope, eyeshadow is still a must for me. I do like small quads or singles, but I actually just bought a 18 pan palette last week.

    I noticed more women are into K beauty, too. The colors are soft and not as crazy saturated like the Western brands. With the economy now a days, over consuming makeup is not my thing now. Like you just mentioned, a person can't use 20 palettes in their lifetime. I am glad you mentioned you don't always have to follow whats on social media and go with your comfort zone.

    I love that indie brands are still on the eyeshadow game and killing it! I’m a massive eyeshadow lover and daily wearer. So I’m so grateful for indie brands. I hope they eventually “come back” into the mainstream too.

    Great video! I have never been really great at applying eyeshadow no matter how much I practice and watch tutorials (I have deep and hooded eyes, lol). So a one and done suits me so much more. And, I find with palettes, I only tend to use 2 maybe three shades, so singles just make so much more sense!

    I love eyeshadow. I have so many pallets. Probably over 40. I can’t throw any away and I can’t justify buying new ones. I wear eyeshadow everyday. I just think there could be a lot of people in the same boat as me. Too much eyeshadow to use in a lifetime!

      So do I. I'm Italian and I bought 2 of them (That's taupe and All amethyst) when I visited the USA last year and I went to Ulta Beauty. I love these 2 palettes so much and I use them very often. I'd really like them to officially launch their products here in Italy.

    Hi Jen, eyeshadow is my favourite products in my makeup routine, I don’t follow trends, I wear makeup because it gives me confidence and makes me happy, I have always loved eyeshadow ( even as a child )& always now as mature women. Love Katherine xoxo

    I think the whole 35 pan palettes ie morphe style went away ages ago
    I still have some of my 12/14 size palettes but honestly I think because blush is having such a moment, having colourful cheeks and eyes is just too too much

    I hope eyeshadow is not gone, that being said I decluttered over 100 pallets and still own about 160 yep a lot. I am older I am to a point I will not use all the makeup I have before I leave this life and things are so expensive that there is very little disposable money to spend. I am blessed I have everything I need and a few of my wants but unless something really peaks my interest I have enough. I understand that it costs more to create pallets but they have also become crazy expensive I have other priorities. Take care and stay safe. Enjoyed this video.❤❤❤❤❤

      Agreed. I'm also older and understand I have a limited number of years left to use up makeup and fragrance. Anymore, unless I can eat it, wear it, or use it up, I don't buy it.

    I'll admit, when I buy eyeshadow, 99.9% of the time, it's indie shadows. I just have too much of everything else and I turn more to mainstream for complexion. It's a sad thing that what I'm drawing from what you're saying is that part of the problem is that life has become so busy, we don't have time to doll ourselves up. I think it's fun to play with eyeshadow, but comparatively speaking, complexion isn't as precise and meticulous, hence time-consuming, as eyeshadow.

    I understand the decline in eyeshadow palettes. For me I don’t use all the colors and several shades go to waste. Also what’s up with not including larger pan sizes for transition shades inclusive for light and deeper skin tones? That’s the color that is used the most. Wet n Wild did that years ago and they were always selling out 🩷

    Great and timely video Jenn! Let me see if I have this straight, we must have middle parts, no eyeshadow, and crew socks or higher or we’re old. 🙄 Trends are fun, but dictating to people how they should look and being rude about appearances isn’t.

    Your #7 reason was particularly insightful. And I like how you encouraged trying a trend to see if it works for you. If it doesn’t, just keep doing what does work for your face and eye shape. Good advice!

    Dresses are hugely popular down here in the south east. This time of year jeans are too darn hot. I honestly think in 2020 we got over saturated with TH-camrs doing pallets. I’ve only gotten into TH-cam since 2020. You’re one of my favs….prob the fav. Your makeup application is very relatable. I’m so glad the young women are getting away from full coverage foundation/makeup. Seems like everyone looked the same for so long.

    I think the simple one and done looks vs the emphasis on more eyeshadow looks may be a cyclical trend. I still love looking at new eyeshadows even though I don’t wear makeup all the time. I actually can’t wait to see the new holiday releases! I went overboard buying eyeshadow palettes starting in 2020. I don’t buy as much anymore because I’ve run out of space to store them (and I don’t want to throw anything out yet).
