You really can't figure out why AEW is losing popularity? It's pretty simple to me; Vince McMahon is gone from WWE.
When AEW first started, wrestling fans were dying for something other than Vince McMahon's terrible out-of-touch booking and the toxic culture within WWE. The company was doing mass releases every other month, talent were on edge all the time because they didn't know if they'd be the next ones cut. So both the fans and the talent were excited about professional wrestling on a big stage that wasn't controlled by VKM. Then CM Punk shows up in AEW and exposes that there's been a toxic culture backstage the whole time, it was just overshadowed by WWE's toxicity. Finally, WWE was purged of it's toxicity when Vince was ousted, and fans were getting what they always wanted from WWE, so they no longer needed an alternative like AEW. Now AEW is seen as the toxic company with an out-of-touch billionaire booking terrible shows, underutilizing highly skilled talent and making fans more interested in what WWE is doing.

Rollins and Reigns have already solidified their place in wrestling by golden words in bold. Punk is also having fun and enjoying being around NXT (who would've thought) Ethan Page is already on a different level so late in his career. Recently we got Giulia, Stephanie Vaquer, Delta, Motor City Machine Guns. Cody Rhodes the literal undisputed champion cutting cinematic promos (with Roman) and so many more wrestlers having fun being around WWE even the legends. Triple H, Nick Khan and Shawn Michaels are fuelling WWE with Nuclear energy.

@@thaywood979 Really? The last year proves that wrong. CM Punk is doing quite well in WWE now and there haven't been any disciplinary issues. CM Punk was never the problem in AEW, Tony's failure to put his jealous talent in check was. Everyone on the roster moved down a peg when Punk showed up, and a lot of the guys who were near the top of the card before his arrival didn't like it. Adam Page and Jungle Toddler are prime examples, and the EVPs definitely couldn't handle it. Wrestling is supposed to be a business, but CM Punk was right when he said AEW is not a business. There's no professionalism. If Tony had hired someone more competent than Christopher Daniels to run talent relations, we might not be having this conversation.

    - Cody Rhodes leaving the company is what caused the cracks to show. He was a true leader, and he had his own vision. The Bucks had their falling out with Cody, and suddenly dirtsheets start spreading rumors on Cody and Brandi turning the fanbase against them. Victim number one
    - CM Punk the biggest acquisition AEW has ever had, the attendance numbers and buy rates show that, it’s not disputable. AEW business was hot in 2022, then you start hearing all these dirtsheet rumors of how Punk got Cabana fired when he wasn’t even fired, and being difficult to work with. The Meltzers of the world reported things like this, gee I wonder where that came from?? Well Punk called them out publicly for it which wasn’t professional but sometimes you just get to a breaking point. Victim number 2
I believe the drama the Bucks started with both Cody and Punk divided their own audience and when the two of them left the company they took half the audience with them, on top of that Vince McMahon retired and I believe more fans were willing to give this new era of WWE a chance.
    - Wardlow had the potential to be the top guy but they completely botched him.
    - potential main eventers like Hobbs, Brian Cage and Big Bill have all jobbed out to 150lb Orange Cassidy, who I’m sorry I don’t see the appeal. Same with Jungle Boy, Wheeler Yuta and Danny Garcia the guys don’t look like they could hold their own in a real fight, they look like pre teens but Tony books them like they’re top guys.
    - You always hear about backstage drama in AEW, it’s like there’s no leadership there anymore.
    - Tony Khan is the biggest problem. He should stop appearing to do interviews if he’s not going to answer questions, all he does is ramble on and on and on and on about how AEW is the best wrestling company. He’s the best booker yada yada.
They have good talent. I like MJF, Swerve, Osprey and even Hangman. I think those 4 guys are stars and have something. AEW still has the vets like Jericho, Mox, Edge, Danielson and Christian. They have the roster but the above mentioned is a lot of what hurt the perception of the company.
Also their fan base… toxic, hateful trolls that live to go online and insult anyone who doesn’t praise Tony Khan and his booking. They are hurting AEW grow new fans.

How will AEW close the gap with WWE? They persevere and grow their audience. Simple. Tend to their own business. Last week, 300K of their cable TV audience didn't watch on Tuesday. The folks saying that These fans watched NXT instead are demonstrably wrong (sorry podcasters). Dynamite and NXT only went "head to head" for an hr. During that hour, NXT's audience didn't decrease too much from its first hour. And AEW? Their audience didn't INCREASE too much (maybe 20-30K) after NXT ended. You don't need a Stats degree to know that there wasn't a large shared audience. Last year, on Tuesday, 250K of AEW's audience didn't tune in. This week, on Tuesday, about 300K of their audience didn't tune in. Tommy Dreamer is always the voice of reason, and I love when they have him on. PHUKK Bubba.

    AEW can course-correct if:
    1) They stop using Jericho, period. He has go away heat with fans. Tony, his friends, whoever, need to sit him down and tell him to go away and come back and do something different because this nonsense changing his gimmick every month and being cringe isn't working.
    2) They need to stop throwing away matches on Dynamite. Television is used to build intrigue to your PPVs. That's where your stories happen. Goldberg-Hogan being given away on free TV was a monumental mistake by WCW. They need to save matches to actually make them special. No one is going to remember throw away matches on Dynamite if every Dynamite is a car crash 5-star indy spot-fest. No one cares about the flips.
    3) They need to stop having these car crash matches all the time, because their talent is too banged up. They, as of writing, have 26 wrestlers out with injuries.
    4) Tony needs to grow a set, and actually release some of the talent. He isn't using them and they just sit around doing nothing for long stints of time while Tony goes and signs someone else new. The people he wants to keep, he actually needs to use. He has three television shows and there's wrestlers who don't appear on any of them. Actually divide the roster up and set it up so you have storylines going on every program so it's worth watching. No one watches Collision or Rampage (assuming it's going away) because the matches never mattered. He can't afford for that to be the case with Shockwave. Put all your main talent on Dynamite since it still has the most eyes. Put all the underneath guys on Collision and Shockwave and give them something to do and use everyone.

MJF no showed a ppv that was supposed to be Wardlows big moment. Brit and Rosa didn't get along. Punk made a fool out of tony and AEW. These are things that no one could predict would happen that stopped momentum for the company and certain wrestlers.

unlike many people i am not gonna sit down here and act like i'm above and beyond knowledgeable folks in the field and say AEW is trash or storylines suck etc etc. nothing that AEW is doing right now are things that wrestling hasn't done before. AEW storylines have in fact gotten a lot better compared to last year as we're seeing more long term bookings
however what i think really happening is simple : WWE is the hotter product at this moment and time. no matter what AEW does right now WWE is the bigger product and will overshadow it while its hot. the same way AEW was doing it to WWE when AEW was hot. Vince no longer being in WWE doesn't mean anything to me. this is Triple H's era honeymoon phase and once this is over then we will see what is going to happen for real.
AEW is still very important for the world of wrestling , its the link between American Wrestling and Mexican/Japanese wrestling and as such it is bringing a lot of eyes towards a lot of talent. (Stephanie Vaquer being one of them , Ethan Page being NXT champion being another , etc etc) so people going out there wishing for the company to die just because they like WWE is ridiculous to me.
AEW has issues. but neither are company breaking level of bad and i've been watching this company since its creation. i am very critical of bad things when i see it as i was with WWE for years , but AEW hasn't reached that level for me. its a different kind of product

No building of storylines, storylines that when they actually start to build are suddenly dropped with no explanation (Statlander as an example), and too many matches that have no meaning. They would be better served using a few more skits/ promos, and a few less Jericho segments. Split the RoH brand away from AEW completely, and consolidate some of the lesser belts. More focus on the women’s division and the tag team division. Those helped separate them from WWE in the past, and can again if done right.

Thank you guys for having this convo and having it calmly and with hope. I can ignore this week because of the move to Tues and travel issues. AEW has been super spotty for at least 2 years now. I don't expect perfect every time but I'm a day 1 fan. I cannot deny that the booking is confusing. Why is HoB still barely midcard??? They should have been running Collision since Punk left. They also had that challenge where they would do any type of stipulation the other team wanted. No one took them up on it. What a lazy, disappointing (and, frankly, very telling) move that was of AEW.
Why is the likes of Athena still on RoH? In a year they haven't been able to find ANYTHING to do with Starks or Wardlow?? Hook is good but I'm not seeing enough growth to warrant the constant screen time we get from him - do the ratings spike during his segments or something? Why is the takeover by The Young Bucks so flat?? They barely hinted at being evil. They could have done so much more with that.
All this talent, 5 hrs of tv time a week, and we still see the same folks and then random matches with no thru-line at all. They HAVE to learn to do more than 1 engaging storyline at a time. That they have nothing lined up for Moriah, post-Toni is such a bad look.
We also need to talk about the presentation of these wrestlers. Most of the look like they just walked off the street - Mox and Danielson can get away with it. The rest of the wrestlers need to put some work into it. It should speak to your gimmick and personality.

Well every company has its flaws, back in the late 2010’s, WWE showed its flaws via Vince McMahon’s out-of-touch booking strategies. But NOW, looking at a lot of underwhelming storylines and where some talent who should be in a better position than they are now, that is one of AEW’s flaws in addition to the talent support and morale backstage recently documented, thus fan support and tv ratings get affected negatively. WWE may have a bit of its flaws even with Paul “Triple H” in charge, but politics aside, its clear as day between WWE and AEW who’s winning the ratings battle, which one has gained more fans lately and which one has produced more compelling storylines.

There never gonna close any gap with WWE...they didn't When they started in 2019 because even back then WWE was way ahead.
No gap. Just stagnant and there honey moon is over now...plus WWE is going through a new Golden Era boom period right now, and they now have the top biggest draws and stars in all of pro wrestling...it's like trying to compete with them in The Attitude Era & The Rock "N" Wrestling Era...it's in possible now because WWE is killing it right now in Ratings, social media, Streaming, Facebook, Twitter/X, TH-cam, Instagram, LIKES, hits, Viewership, revenue, Breaking livegate records, selling out every week in record numbers, making millions hands and feet, Stars have been made, stars are now mainstream, attendance is at all time high...they rule streaming....they are breaking records everywhere they go... there Pay-Per-View/Special events are selling out months before, and breaking attendance records...Just imagine when they decide to Go to Wimbley Stadium they will surpass anything AEW ever did in attendance, including grossing more...I mean they did in 1992 with 83,000 but people forget that right... WWE will shatter all of them including their 1992 SummerSlam attendance and gate records. If WWE really decided to do a Pay-Per-View at Wimbley Stadium nOw they will shatter anyone's previous records, and gross higher then anything that Country has seen breaking any records...it's too easy for WWE.
They are on top of the world right now. You will never see another WCW Monday night war again... nobody will ever see those days again people need to move with that unrealistic fantasy and move with the times and stop living in the past.
Eric Bischoff remands the only man who defeated WWE and Vince McMahon head to head in a real ratings war for 2 years straight....the likes of that will never happen again.
WWE is too powerful nowadays, they are not at the brink of going out of business, they are not dying ratings wise, they are not losing sponsors, and losing top mega draw stars, they are making new Mega stars...it was easy for Ted Turner to come in and dominate when Vince McMahon and WWE were suffering financially and almost going out of business losing almost everything, including resources, they had to start from scratch well Ted Turner brought out his billions and he owned 4 network's, he paid wrestlers guaranteed contracts with days off, and creative control over their careers, plus more money....they had bigger budget more money ..back then...Not anymore, they are not in that situation and haven't been since 1998.... they have more money then anytime of it's existence...they are making more money then any Era.
If Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar, CM Punk, Seth Rollins all decided to leave to AEW all at once then you'll see some significant change...but that won't ever happen.
The WWE wrestlers that leave WWE for AEW were never big draws and never put butts in seats never broke merch records...they are not needle movers.
Plus WWE knows how to tell real long term storytelling and get Causel fans invested week by week episodic television...WWE now is watched by all Demographics including 18-30 Demo...they are now watched by Causel fans which you need to have ratings...they are the true masses.
Only catering to your small obscure Mark loyal audiences will only keep your product stagnant and it will never grow...you need to cater to everyone and stop catering to IWC they never move the needle...it becomes, repetitive, redundant, and tired.
The reason pro wrestling got the 3 Golden Era's of pro wrestling like The Rock "N" Wrestling Era, The Attitude Era, and now with the Renaissance Cinema Era is because of the Causel fans watching, Lapsed fans watching again...they are the ones that make pro wrestling mainstream and popular again. Unfortunately for the smart Marks they never help ratings go up they are always gonna be the loyal watchers regardless of pro wrestlings popularity....But Causel fans turn pro wrestling into a pop culture Phenomena and make ratings go all the way and they are the ones that need to be invested.
Plus Causel fans are always interested and more invested in long term storytelling and character builds, promos, charisma, believability, realism, the pro wrestlers need to be larger than life and believable.

    It's happening right now.
For as big as this show is, they always leave out context in favour of the instant gratification response. Busted Open is big enough to focus less on SEO topics that rage bait and stoke the flames of tribalism. The last half dozen uploads prove that. Wrestling has a common baseline when it comes to a ring, opponents and a story. But you still have to adjust the way you watch every company. Ebbs and flows. Carry on.

I genuinely hope AEW does fix things but with TK running things I cant see it happening. WWE is on fire and AEW can sell 2k tickets. Its sad what it has become but unless they admit there are issues and attempt to correct it they will never get better bc they are not trying to change. TK keeps saying that everything is fine. Clearly it wont change.

It was really really bad for AEW to lose Cody and Punk because early on it seemed the company was built for them... now they've lost Kenny Omega due to health problems and we see MJF only every so often... AEW needs to strengthen their lower roster and establish their flagship competitors all over again so it seems like they're in a bit of a scramble

Cody helped Tony put together the shows, and now he doesn't. That's what happened in the last 3-4 years, Dave.

It’s because WWE got better after Vince left and majority of the people can only consume a certain amount of wrestling content. They’re now watching the WWE while die hard wrestling fans will still watch both AEW and WWE or a small percentage watch only AEW

It’s never going to rebound 😂it’s just slowly going to continue to die until either Tony gives up or his father is sick of losing money.

    Bro, it's easy:
    1. New booker: TK can't book. He lacks logic and sense. He books to himself and his friends but not for the big audience. Not only focusing on a niche. He needs to book to every wrestling fan out there.
    2. New marketing team: The merch is boring and awful. TK himself remembers on social media the matches of the show two days before at least. That's not his job. Use a team that makes that work.
    3. Push younger talent: Enough of Moxley. Enough of Jericho. Push talent that needs to be pushed. Not OC. Not Perry. Not Yuta. People that qualifies for TV and that have a lot of personality because charisma sells more than a banger of a match.
    4. Fire everyone that doesn't want to learn or improve: If he has a lot of talent that have a massive ego and refuse to listen to the old guard, fire them. They need to listen to people that knows the business. People that have worked in the wrestling business. On TV. Not on indys. HHH has a lot of people that knows the business while TK listens to everyone (At least 30 people). That's insane. 10 and that's a lot.

Dave if you really care about AEW, Grow a set and admit Tony has to either change his way of booking or hire someone who knows how to and be truthful with him about it.

It won’t change, AEW getting a new WBD deal justified Tony’s horrible booking in his eyes. I swear I only hear AEW talk on busted open. I just can’t watch, it’s a boring product. AEW has zero culture impact. Nobody cares about this professional indie wrestling promotion.

It's sad to know that there is another wrestling company out there that's grinding and doing what they're supposed to do and people don't want a company like that they would rather a billionaire just buy a company and put money behind it and push it down our eyes I'm going to always be a TNA fan till the day I die TNA is the best company
