Oh man, the Compton timer is such a good example. Often times when I watch a friend play a game a timer will show up. My friend will start to panic and flounder, and I'll calmly think, "Hey, stop panicking. The timer just means go. You're gonna be fine, just keep holding right on the d-pad." But the *moment* a timer shows up when I'm playing a game, my parasympathetic nervous system immediately reacts, the panic comes in, and I am reminded in real time that it's not just flight or flight, but fight, flight, and FREEZE.
17:42 This reminds me... There's this Minecraft TH-camr called Mumbo Jumbo, who's channel is pretty popular. But a while back he started losing motivation to make videos. He was struggling so much that he just decided to stop and take a vacation. He stopped making videos for a few months, and instead focused on his more recreational hobbies. But SOMEHOW he ended up getting even _more_ subscribers, and his channel grew a lot during the time he was away! The algorithm really isn't as impactful as people make it out to be.
Listennnnnn, then it did its job LMAO. I was genuinely so anxious about that sequence because I made it look very messy. And while it was purposeful I also hated that aspect of it LMAO
I played _cats are liquid: a light in the shadows_ the other day for the first time, and while it is a simple calming game, there was an ability you encounter about 2/3 into the game that has a timer it literally gives you 100 seconds to walk about 5 seconds before you turn it off, but OH BOY every time it started audibly ticking down i commonly fell into lava from how much i was under stress and such a lenient timer too...
So many people drop Pikmin and give up because of the time limit, because its "too stressful." But its actually NOT that bad. You can easily get multiple ship parts a day if you play smart, and the time limit is part of the whole appeal. Its shame so many people don't give it the time of day. :(
i hate timers sm in games but sometimes theyre necessary for one reason or another. its kinda hard to put into words beyond "stress". this video was great, really insightful x). time is so, so very real.
Yeah, in general, timers only add unnecessary stress to the game. I especially hate when platformers had auto-scroll section. ALSO, GOOD VIDEO AS ALWAYS!
Ok so like yes you're right its all in my head..... but I'm still gonna freak out about timers 😂 But a wonderful, personal, and insightful essay ooter!!!
What about invisible timers? Firstly, not sure if this example fits in with your video, but since you mentioned Signalis, a memory flashed in my mind. I am kind of disappointed with the parameters for the different endings. To get the "Promise" ending, one of the requirements is to take more than 12 hours to complete the game. I finished the game in just under ten hours. I felt somewhat punished for playing well and completing the game faster than the arbitrary time estimated by the devs (?). I played on Normal difficulty and explored everything. I would take "excursions" from a save location through the level, see what rooms where worth the hassle, plan a route to execute and then get things done. Secondly, Alien: Isolation. If you linger around a room or a zone too much, the xenomorph spawns and starts hunting you. The game puts pressure on the player in the form of an invisible timer. If they get scared and freeze, this actually triggers the cause of that fear -- the xenomorph. So, with this invisile timer the game forces you to actually play and not hide. Since the timer is invisible to the player, you don't really know how much time you can spend on exploring optional rooms for crafting materials, access terminals for logs etc.
time? did you know? that's how i got old... for which you're welcome, of course. I'm also not stressing about time RIGHT NOW. I would never do that. *glances nervously over at work stuff* hee hee
Like if you came here from The Architect of Games' recommendation ^.^ Excellent video btw, love the chill, artistic vibes of the video as a whole as well as your clever insights. Hope all things go well with your financial situation, homie. All the best!

Exactly! Ugh Psychonauts 2 is so good

Thanks for always listing the name of the video game in the bottom corner. I don't know why so few videos do that.
For sure! Always like to shout out the games that inspire my work.
3:58 perhaps one of the most anxiety-inducing sequences I've seen on this platform filmot1SWEAT
Listennnnnn, then it did its job LMAO. I was genuinely so anxious about that sequence because I made it look very messy. And while it was purposeful I also hated that aspect of it LMAO
Actually, the most misunderstood gaming mechanic is inventory management.

I praise it for exactly these reasons! Love pikmin!

THREAT. Thank you haha. And I'm glad you enjoyed it hee hee. You're great!
8:36 lol I have a physical reaction to the timers in this video 😂 I so feel you!
I'm so sorry lmao
yo, that Psychonaughts 2 timer fact blew my mind like holy shit that's fucking awesome omg. I beat it first try so idk that was a thing
Hell yeah!
Yeah, in general, timers only add unnecessary stress to the game. I especially hate when platformers had auto-scroll section.
ALSO, GOOD VIDEO AS ALWAYS!
Oooooh auto-scrolling is the WORST. I almost included a section about underwater breath meters actually lmao. But the Sonic drowning song was TOO MUCH
Getting an entire section on Psychonauts 2 is always a blessing!
Such a perfect game!
@@filmotter The best sequel ever I'd argue! (altough I'm biased I guess)
Great video! And Melancholia is one of my favorite movies!
Is it? Same! It's one of those comfy/sad movies I put on way more than I should lmao
Love your videos! This one was exceptionally great though! Can’t wait for what’s next :)
Thanks! I'm glad you dig it. 😁
Ok so like yes you're right its all in my head..... but I'm still gonna freak out about timers 😂
But a wonderful, personal, and insightful essay ooter!!!
Thanks Coral! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😁😁😁 I do what I can!

Thank you so much! I'm glad it connected in some way. 😁
