How Dialogue RUINED This Game
This is the story of How Dialogue Ruined a Game. Indika seems to be one of those video games. You know what I mean? People can’t really decide whether they love it or hate it. Whether it’s a walking simulator or a horror game. (Still Wakes the Deep, anyone?) Indika is one of those games that I feel like is going to inspire a lot of video essays for a long time. And I mostly enjoyed Indika. But my main issue was its writing. Indika is a game that would be almost perfect if it embraced a more “show don’t tell” mindset. There’s so much awkward philosophical debate that its characters end up not feeling like characters. But the quiet moments have so much to say. Indika is at its best when it’s quiet. Indika’s puzzles and scenery are so unique that I feel like another Game of the Year 2024 contender, Animal Well, could teach Indika quite a lot. They’re very different games. But Animals Well embraces the idea of “show don’t tell” while Indika’s dialogue is drowning out its best ideas.
