This is why walking in North Bali is impossible - Day 3

  • Together with my friend @Mash Is Free we walked 60KM from North to South Bali. It is safe to say this was one big EPIC ADVENTURE. During this walk we faced many challenges. We had to face Bali's central mountains which include several peaks over 2,000 metres in elevation, the high rainfall in the northern parts of the island and the insane heat and cold weather.
Many people told me I was crazy and that it would be an impossible thing to do. But I still packed my bags, found someone crazy enough to join me and traveled to the north side of Bali. Because

In some area in Indonesia, picking up money is not something good to do, as when someone lose it, it's their bad luck. Thus when we pick it up, we pick their bad luck. This series is great btw. I did half of the trip back years ago and it brings back the memories.

True. I have a shop and sometimes shoppers drop their money unknowingly. Do I took it? Yes, but instead I give to the employee, ask them to buying food or snacks so it would break the bad luck and change for joy. Don't and never keep that for my own.

As an Indonesian, i don't know anything about this "bad luck" thing nor i believe in that superstitious. Sometimes, i just don't pick it up pennies because of shame instead of being superstitious.

As far as i ever experienced, the perfect timing to driving (and probably walking) with lots of sunshine shining down all the way on the road from Singarja via Bedugul to the south at least untill Tabanan area would be only perfect at the peak of dry season which last between late May to late August. Outside that months, the combo of cold weather and rain in Bedugul were more than willing to freeze anyone down to their skin with possibilities of landslides were haunting some parts of the road 😅

I don't think it's wise. In a left side drive country the pedestrian line is on the left side too. Much safer, if anything gone wrong(i pray nothing will go wrong) it'll become the fault of the vehicles, not the pedestrian.

@@gypsyinsneakers in France for many many years in such situation pedestrians are told from kindergarten times to walk facing in coming traffic. It makes sense as one can see or feel in coming danger giving you the micro time needed to move promptly away from yr danger zone. No other way to be safe. I am puzzled to observe/see many folks here walking with potential incoming danger behind them with no way to preventing potential hit. where did they learn that from?

Thanks for sharing again! I must have been superfortunate during my trips to the elevated parts of Bali! Just a little input, you say its always rainy in North Bali, i think its not all true. When you decent from the mountains and get closer to the ocean, its hardly any rain at all. Like areas around Tulamben to Amed, its not that much rain as in the mountains

There are two seasons in Bali: the wet season (November to March) and the dry season (April to October). The average temperature doesn't fluctuate much throughout the year, hovering around 79 degrees Fahrenheit. However, humidity is an important variable when it comes to Bali weather.

I hope someday can accomplish too to walk from Singaraja to Nusa Dua and from Amlapura to Gilimanuk.
Just one comment/ suggestion: whenever you talk to the small street vendors selling traditional food/ krupuk, please help to buy something.
To me it looks rude when digital influencers record their products to post on social media, while these people are trying to make a living, still allowing foreigners to record but at the end buying nothing.

When you get wet sneakers, stuff them full of news paper, or grab the free Bali papers and stuff them very tightly in your sneakers. Let the paper sit until just before you go to sleep then pull it all out & then re-stuff the paper in your sneakers again...put the paper in them tightly again....words of experience...
I know all those villages and roads you are walking like the back of my hand....just be-careful through the "Black Bali" area...they are distant cousins of the Bali Aga....if you get the chance...ask to be taken to the hanging tree...it is where an ancient mummy ritual of the dead where they are embalmed exactly like ancient Egyptians do, then they hang the mummies upside in a massive tree that can be seen from the road...nowhere else in the world does any other culture do this...lokals are scared of the Bali Aga...but they are ok....just Becareful...
Enjoy your journey...& be-careful of the black Bali.......
