I don't know how to classify consciousness, but considering how fungi can: -control bugs' muscular and nervous systems (cordyceps, massospora) -make music (via bioelectricity!) - sense + move + build traps for lil worms (ogliospora), -and communicate through their mycelium, I'm sure that fungi experience some sort of consciousness. Ong, I wish humanity eventually develops some sort of hivemind type fungi, that works symbiotically to make a more optimized network similar to the internet, but with less governmental control, brainrot, and also a bit of mind control, to make sure there are no wars or conflict.
Years ago, I wrote a short story about a Lovecraftian horror, that turned out to be afraid of entering the woods. The reason being the ageless fungal network waiting for it to die, so it could be consumed. One eternal horror recognizing another. It would probably have gone over better, if I could have packaged it with this video.
I support this concept! It would make an amazing story! It mirrors the real life story of yeast and the Higher Fungi. Yes, the yeastie Beastie does not want to die and return to the earth. So it had us do the work of clearing the forests and keeping it alive in our bread and our beer and our guts. Saying mushrooms are conscious is kind of like saying computer networks are conscious. Like maybe, because we can't confirm or deny anything is conscious, but i mean, it's kind of hard to argue a data center is conscious because it's so interconnected and in tune with other data centers it communicates with. Each center is in perfect harmony knowing when and where to send data to. Replace data with nutrients and chemical signals and it's basically the same structure as far as cognition is concerned. I don't think it's a good idea to anthropomorphize mushrooms in this way, because it kind of misses the broader view on cognition and agency in general. It's the same reason anthropomorphizing AI as terminators or mechanical people is a bad idea. It makes unwarranted assumptions that more than likely won't be true. If an artificial super intelligence takes over the world and kills all of us it's not going to be because it hates us and would just love to see us suffering and dead no matter what, it's because it will see us as competition over resources it could use. Why is this? Because irrational feelings of hatred are not useful for completely most tasks, so machine learning algorithms won't select for them. But people like thinking about bots as if they would have that because it feels more interesting. Likewise, the idea that the structure of a mushroom colony is applicable to human society feels very endearing and interesting, but it's just not really true. Mushrooms are lifeforms that have little to no autonomy from their genes, unlike human beings. A mushroom in a mushroom colony will behave and grow exactly how their genes tell them to and there's no free will they can excercise to disobey their genes. A mushroom and its genes are one and the same in terms of agency. A human being, will have a vastly different mind depending on what experiences they have, and they can deliberately choose not to reproduce even though there's a selection pressure against it. A mushroom, will always reproduce unless a kin selection trait activates. It always does whatever reproduces its genes most successfully. And under that simplistic cognition, egalitarian communes can be selected for, because there isn't the chaos of animal brains.
